Movies became popular by word of mouth - there was no satellite TV , no OTT, no internet, no 24 hour TV, very limited marketing , hardly any magazines on films, 99% households did not have TV or telephones , very little publicity, no multiplexes , India’s population was 1/2 of today, middle class was a fraction of todays . Amitabh became a even bigger superstar from mid 70s onwards... his injury in 1982 had whole of india praying for him. He surpassed rajesh khanna in terms of superstardom
Rajesh Khanna’s scope was actor was immense. Amitabh Bachchan was popular but he was the ‘angry young man’ whereas Rajesh Khanna couldn’t be so easily labelled. For me personally he was highly charismatic actor one of a kind.
Story behind this song recording is interesting. Director was furious that 50 thousand in those days was spent for audio recording of this one song. Kishore Kumar adds his own words at the end to lighten up the recording studio “ bajao rey bajao imaandari sey, pachaas hazaar kharcha kar diye”. Iconic ! Classic!

The song has been shot in Gulmarg, Kashmir. Look at the place. Virgin meadows, lush green pastures, 90% (if not all) hill in background covered with forest cover, no 'gobar' or ponies littering entire landscape, minimal constructions and no cars/buses in sight.
And look at Gulmarg of today. Half of forest in background has been wiped out to build elite hotels. Another half taken over for military garrison. Hundreds of buildings. Thousands of mules littering entire meadow with dung. Non stop car honking whatever corner of Gulmarg you go.
Gulmarg of today is a plain high altitude cesspool. Barring skiing in Dec-Feb period this place has completely gone to the dogs.
