I'll have to step up my game now seeing how your videos look so professional! :D I'll probably wait a bit more to make the lvl110 Legion Guide and only make a short version for the pre-patch. Oh, btw one thing you didn't mention in your video and I think is pretty important for PvE especially is the way Dispersion pauses the Insanity Drain. Let's say you disperse when you're at a 20 insanity/sec loss. As soon as you come out of dispersion you will still be at the same 20 loss/sec even though you will have extra stacks since you spend 6 seconds "for free" in Voidform. I hope that makes sense. XD I thought it might help you knowing that since it looks like you're going for the absolute min-max mode about it! :D
Good point! I should have indeed specify the whole Dispersion insanity drain. I mentioned that Dispersion and Void Torrent prevent further drain during their active-time, but I should've went into more detail with these factors, providing more specific examples. Thanks for the feedback!

Great video! I wasn't sure if Shadow Priest was the spec for me, Affliction just hasn't drawn me in but I desperately want to play a DoT based class. Just the right video length also, covered enough that I feel I know about the class without being intimidating.
Awesome, thanks for the video. One thing I'd like to see (from any WoW guide) would be when you're describing certain spells, throw up the image of the spell that you're talking about for a second. It's easy to get confused or forget which spell you're talking about with its name only. Especially for someone new to a class.

I was planning on playing spriest as an alt in Legion because it really is amazingly fun and in my opinion the best incarnation of shadow. One thing i might suggest is when you're talking about the rotation, for newer players it might be easier to comprehend if you edited photos of the abilities into the video with arrows leading to the next ability performed

Thanks a lot! Easily one of the best DPS classes at the moment, and look VERY good come Legion. We do need time to ramp-up our damage (due to our artifact, the nature of our playstyle, etc.), which means we lack burst. But apart from that; we do insane damage when given a bit of time! hope this helped!

Thanks for your trust! Almost correct! Depending on how much trash there is, I generally dot everything up with Shadow Word: Pain and an occasional Vampiric Touch, before focusing one target. If we're just AoEing like mad men, I simply SW:P everything and then Mind Flay - as that is the only AoE we currently have at our disposal. Hope this helped!
+Nam Tran that may very well be the case unfortunately :/ but we don't have any better AoE capabilities when it comes to big groups, unless you were to talent Shadow Crash, which helps a little bit.

Excellent video and very informative. I saw a video of a Shadow Priest doing the artifact quest and he was using Mind Flay and it split into several pieces and worked like an AOE. How is that done?
I believe you saw a video from the early alpha/beta, is that possible? Back then, there was a bug that allowed Mind Flay and/or Mind Sear to split itself, channeling onto multiple targets. Currently it is not possible to actually "split" Mind Flay onto different targets. :/
I died because I messed up my rotation. The footage served to simply show that 100 stacks can be achieved, but I left the death of my first try in the footage to show you that mistakes are normal, and even I mess up at times. hope this answered your concern! :)

I am not a big fan of keeping dots up on multiple targets but I want to play shadow priest.. could you still recommend shadow to me, even with a more single target minded playstyle like I have? :)
Thanks a lot! It indeed able, yes! However, it requires a lot of base haste, meaning it's not really doable at the beginning of an expansion (unless you have a bloodlust/heroism available!) on one target. I would still recommend a shadow priest to you, as the class is able to deal high amounts of single-target damage due to its artifact weapon (which I will discuss further in a future video, but have already touched on in a previous one!). Hope this helped!

Hey there David, This depends on how your group is set up. YOu are correct to being worried about AoE, unfortunately. :/ We lack a lot of AoE compared to other classes, and this cuts down on our effectiveness in Mythic Dungeons. But unless you're going as high as Mythic +8 or more, this is absolutely no problem. Once you're that high, you should really consider looking at a very good setup, as the shadow priest is unable to compete at high Mythic Dungeon Level without a good setup to support him/her. Hope this helped!

Oh most definitely! The two have similar basic ideas behind them - in forms of cleaving, but the essence and playstyle of the two are fundamendaly different.
I'm using a variety actually! First and foremost, I'm using WeakAuras 2 to display my insanity bar and my Auspicious spirits. I'm also using Skada to display damage, and (not included in this video, because this was recorded on the Beta) ElvUI and KuiNameplates to enhance my interface and unit frames. Be sure to check out my Shadow Priest AddOns, Macros, and WeakAura Strings covered in another video, perhaps you'll find more interesting things there. Hope this helped!
Whats your personal experience so far with the Shadowpriest compared to other ranged DPS specs. Can he be played in a competative way or does he get outdps'ed by several other classes? Im talking bout raidenviroment.
Glad you're asking! When talking about the Raid environment, the Spriest excels at cleaving (especially 3 targets), and does very well in Single-Target DPS. If given enough time, and if played on a good level, there is HONESTLY no class who can out-dps you when for example using Surrender to Madness and according talents. Yes, you lack burst, but you completely make up for it with sustained damage over time. I think the shadow priests damage spot on the meters is rivaled by hunters, rogues, GOOD warlocks, and demon hunters. Other classes are inferior at this time. Hope this helped!

No problem! :) Simply cast Vampiric Touch and DIRECTLY AFTER IT spam Shadow Word: Pain. As SW:P is instant, it ties onto the cast of VT, and the two can be applied to the target simultaneously. Hope this helped!

Hey there! Absolutely TONS of fun, not too difficult to get an understanding of - and has a high skill cap that rewards players who put time into it! Could be interesting for you!
Great question - They're actually level-independent, but are activated once your each certain Stacks - or seconds - of your voidform. At 15 seconds, you gain 2 , at 30 Seconds (I think), you gain 2 more, and at 60 you gain 2 more, leaving you with 6 tentacles, eventually. :) Hope this helped!
It's actually incredibly strong at the moment! Yes, bosses indeed take longer than three Minutes typically, but StM makes our execute-phase super strong, and compensates for the rest of our damage - when used properly!

Shadow Priest is indeed clustery in PvP! Some Honor Talents to improve this, but I personally hope Blizzard will look over this again, and make things a bit more fluent for our gameplay in PvP!

+Angelo WoW I was trying it with void bolt on the beta, I usually use MO macros but for some reason void bolt wasn't working so I used VE, THAT WORKS!!!
Yes! Apologies for not mentioning that! For Void Bolt, you have to use the Void Eruption AND THEN the Void Bolt in order for them both to work on the same button!
I don't think you were specific with the rotation like how do you active void form? Maybe you should just do a video on rotation focus cause you didn't give me very helpful information with the rotation of SP.

GREAT guide, but SPriests got so damn technical. I hear Aboni's complaints in his videos. Man, I am going to miss no-dot builds, like in WoD; if I wanted a dot class, I would have rolled an Affi Lock...
Thank you! And you're right - we have gottan rather technical! Compared to the likes of an affliction lock, we play a lot more "hectic" and generally faster, and I can imagine that not everyone enjoys this playstyle - but honestly both Warlocks and Priests are top-notch in my opinion! :)
i still dont understand this spec it seems to want you to be a turret caster but then it also wants you to do dot damage. Really dont like the changes to shadow at all.
Granted, they're not for everyone! Overall, the class is a ton of fun, and the "glass-canon"-like gameplay really expresses itself through the shadow priest, in my opinion. :)

Thanks a lot! Easily one of the best DPS classes at the moment, and look VERY good come Legion. We do need time to ramp-up our damage (due to our artifact, the nature of our playstyle, etc.), which means we lack burst. But apart from that; we do insane damage when given a bit of time!

Thanks for your trust! Almost correct! Depending on how much trash there is, I generally dot everything up with Shadow Word: Pain and an occasional Vampiric Touch, before focusing one target. If we're just AoEing like mad men, I simply SW:P everything and then Mind Flay - as that is the only AoE we currently have at our disposal.

Mind sear? I was in a dungeon earlier and the holy priest's holy nova was doing more damage than me :) quite depressing
+Nam Tran that may very well be the case unfortunately :/ but we don't have any better AoE capabilities when it comes to big groups, unless you were to talent Shadow Crash, which helps a little bit.

what is your opinion on the Dispersion nerf
Excellent video and very informative. I saw a video of a Shadow Priest doing the artifact quest and he was using Mind Flay and it split into several pieces and worked like an AOE. How is that done?
I believe you saw a video from the early alpha/beta, is that possible? Back then, there was a bug that allowed Mind Flay and/or Mind Sear to split itself, channeling onto multiple targets. Currently it is not possible to actually "split" Mind Flay onto different targets. :/
Good video but why do you die at 14:44 and you edit it to show you doing more dps / living longer?
I died because I messed up my rotation. The footage served to simply show that 100 stacks can be achieved, but I left the death of my first try in the footage to show you that mistakes are normal, and even I mess up at times.

Hello there, and welcome! My UI is called ElvUI - a relatively wide-spread user-interface alternative to the regular Blizzard Unit Frames. You can get ElvUI here:

My other AddOns include WeakAuras2 (lets me personalize timers, cooldowns, and ability icons), Skada (damage-meter), and Deadly Boss Mods (shows me Boss mechanics when they're incoming). I am not a big fan of keeping dots up on multiple targets but I want to play shadow priest.. could you still recommend shadow to me, even with a more single target minded playstyle like I have? :)
Thanks a lot! It indeed able, yes! However, it requires a lot of base haste, meaning it's not really doable at the beginning of an expansion (unless you have a bloodlust/heroism available!) on one target. I would still recommend a shadow priest to you, as the class is able to deal high amounts of single-target damage due to its artifact weapon (which I will discuss further in a future video, but have already touched on in a previous one!).

This depends on how your group is set up. YOu are correct to being worried about AoE, unfortunately. :/ We lack a lot of AoE compared to other classes, and this cuts down on our effectiveness in Mythic Dungeons. But unless you're going as high as Mythic +8 or more, this is absolutely no problem. Once you're that high, you should really consider looking at a very good setup, as the shadow priest is unable to compete at high Mythic Dungeon Level without a good setup to support him/her.

Oh most definitely! The two have similar basic ideas behind them - in forms of cleaving, but the essence and playstyle of the two are fundamendaly different.
what addons do you use? they look great!
I'm using a variety actually! First and foremost, I'm using WeakAuras 2 to display my insanity bar and my Auspicious spirits. I'm also using Skada to display damage, and (not included in this video, because this was recorded on the Beta) ElvUI and KuiNameplates to enhance my interface and unit frames.

Whats your personal experience so far with the Shadowpriest compared to other ranged DPS specs. Can he be played in a competative way or does he get outdps'ed by several other classes? Im talking bout raidenviroment.
Glad you're asking! When talking about the Raid environment, the Spriest excels at cleaving (especially 3 targets), and does very well in Single-Target DPS. If given enough time, and if played on a good level, there is HONESTLY no class who can out-dps you when for example using Surrender to Madness and according talents. Yes, you lack burst, but you completely make up for it with sustained damage over time. I think the shadow priests damage spot on the meters is rivaled by hunters, rogues, GOOD warlocks, and demon hunters. Other classes are inferior at this time. Hope this helped!

Simply cast Vampiric Touch and DIRECTLY AFTER IT spam Shadow Word: Pain. As SW:P is instant, it ties onto the cast of VT, and the two can be applied to the target simultaneously. Hope this helped!

What level do S-priests get the tentacles while in Voidform? My level 26 doesn't have the tentacles.
Great question - They're actually level-independent, but are activated once your each certain Stacks - or seconds - of your voidform. At 15 seconds, you gain 2 , at 30 Seconds (I think), you gain 2 more, and at 60 you gain 2 more, leaving you with 6 tentacles, eventually. :)

How are you using "Surrender to Madness" in raids if you die after 3 minutes? Arent the bosses taking longer than 3 minuets?
It's actually incredibly strong at the moment! Yes, bosses indeed take longer than three Minutes typically, but StM makes our execute-phase super strong, and compensates for the rest of our damage - when used properly!

In PvP it's a clusterfuck..Before I could actually beat rogues in duels..Now I can barely touch anything that's melee. I miss the mobility qq

Shadow Priest is indeed clustery in PvP! Some Honor Talents to improve this, but I personally hope Blizzard will look over this again, and make things a bit more fluent for our gameplay in PvP!

Yes! Apologies for not mentioning that! For Void Bolt, you have to use the Void Eruption AND THEN the Void Bolt in order for them both to work on the same button!

I came here because I started to realize that spriest requires a lot of micromanagement. It can be overwhelming to noob priests like me.
GREAT guide, but SPriests got so damn technical. I hear Aboni's complaints in his videos. Man, I am going to miss no-dot builds, like in WoD; if I wanted a dot class, I would have rolled an Affi Lock...

And you're right - we have gottan rather technical! Compared to the likes of an affliction lock, we play a lot more "hectic" and generally faster, and I can imagine that not everyone enjoys this playstyle - but honestly both Warlocks and Priests are top-notch in my opinion! :)
i still dont understand this spec it seems to want you to be a turret caster but then it also wants you to do dot damage. Really dont like the changes to shadow at all.
Granted, they're not for everyone! Overall, the class is a ton of fun, and the "glass-canon"-like gameplay really expresses itself through the shadow priest, in my opinion. :)
