I take my hat off to this true artist, I only wish I could be so artful. I had real enjoyment watching this video.
Really it isnt that hard . To be honest you can made rocks using aluminum foil molds that look good. This is just way to much work
BEST video on UA-cam covering the subject. Mr. Rademacher is an artist of course, but the techniques are well within the skill level of most serious modelers. Looking forward to trying this process myself.
Underrated artwork. This is mind blowing
I can never find thick foam blocks, so I make my own. The thinner 4' x 8' sheets of this material can be found at the hardware store: Home Depot or Lowe's, etc.. in the home insulation section. Cut them with a blade into smaller sheets, spread elmers glue on them and stack them into a block. Weigh the stack down with something heavy, and then after a day or so, you'll have a nice foam block to carve. This can be done with the blue foam sheets at the hardware store as well, just remember to peel off any plastic sheeting that may be on them. Good luck! (laminate process)

i am just getting into this hobby (model trains and layouts,) and I will be learning and practicing my Technics for ever. i spent years doing the scale model aircraft! but man these guys are true artists. I was never really a fan of the computer and dont even own a cell phone as I am old school (an old fart) but thank god for the internet as we are able to learn and watch the true masters at work! VERY NICELY DONE!! A TRUE MASTERPIECE.
One of the best ways that I have seen to make realistic rocks faces out of styrofoam one youtube. I also think this is the easiest and quickest way.
I found Alberts work fascinating to watch I will try to emulate his work but I’m not convinced my work will compare well to Alberts. Thank you for this insight.

It helps to have a shop vac handy. It keeps the work area clean and saves the debris in a convenient place. Also, dry brushing (stippling) w/ acetone gives some cool textures. To bring in some other colors, you can use chalk here and there before painting.
He makes it look so easy... I am about to find out because I am starting my layout build. I have A LOT to do... I have built the bench work and have laid 1/2” foam board and that’s it. 20’ X 15’ X 22’ with a 5’ peninsula. No track plan because I gave up trying to write one. I am playing by ear with a good idea of how I want it to flow as well as what all I want on the layout (bridges, lakes, river, tunnels, mountains etc etc..). I have collected HO scale train items for about 35 years. I didn’t want to settle for a small layout. I wanted to wait until I could build a good sized layout. January of this year we purchased a 5800 square foot home and I have a entire room dedicated to the train layout I have waited 35 years to have. However, I have majorly over bought in those 35 years... I mean majorly... I have so much stuff that even I forget that I had things I find while going through it all. I have at least 300 engines, over 1000 rolling stock, buildings of all sizes & shapes, mining equipment, trucks, cars, people, I’m talking dozens on dozens of everything. It’s insane and a fortune money wise. I honestly became a hoarder of train stuff! I still have to watch myself from buying more stuff. It’s crazy! I have not counted all that I have.. It’s never all been out and put together to really be able to count everything. I still have many blue box Athearn Diesel engines in the box and have never been assembled (handrails, sunshades etc). They have the price tag on the end of each box of $32.95 or something. They have never seen a piece of track. So the good news is that train items hold their values really good. I will build my layout using what I need or want. I have no need to keep all of these items so I will sell a lot on eBay. I have many DC and many DCC locomotives. My favorite lines are Norfolk Southern, CSX and Clinchfield. I have a lot of Electromotive engines as well. I always thought it would be cool to have a Electromotive shop on my layout. I have all lines though and I really just like the main 3 the best. I do have all of the Heritage collection (I think...) I have several duplicates I know.. again it’s hard to know what I have and what I lack. I may lack 1 or 2 to complete the collection. I have kits that are already built kits that are long discontinued. I am sure I have many rare pieces in my collection. I have maybe 4 or 5 of the 4141 George Bush locomotives. I am literally just remembering things as I type here. I am not even sure how I got to rambling here but if you read this far then thanks for reading! 😂😂.

Wonderful job. I only prefer the drybrush technique over the spray technique for the highlighting. I just feel its more controlable. I hope to see more of his work.

You do raise a good point but we have to rember nature is never perfect not one rockface is the same some are more on the black side some are the other way on the light side .
We're I live in New Zealand the sandstone is quite a yellow the limestone is more of a white and the grey wacky faces are a very dark almost black look to them his way of painting would suit grey wacky rocks very well
I love this handmade stuffs. I just love them. They are so nature and real.
In 3D programs i also like when some is made by hand, not just some filters and ready shapes and pattern.

No lie, I been modeling for yrs and to achieve this look with foam is a lot of work. I would screw this up 10 times and up throwing it out. Incredible Job !!
There are some great techniques here, but there are a number of ways you can save money. 1) buy thinner foam and layer it to the basic shape. 2) the specialty glue is a waste of money. Use painters caulk, wood, or gorilla glue to join. You can use the lighter glue to hold the rubble. 3) use lower cost spray paint or if you have small compressor, thin down cheap acrylic paints from the craft stores. You don't need to spend so much money to get the same results.
Tesa is definitely not specialty glue. It is as common as old fashioned Elmer's. You can buy it everywhere here in Europe.

3M Spray Adhesive 77 from any Home Depot or Lowes is the quickest, best way to adhere to large sections together, creating an almost "welded" seam, and it will NEVER come apart. Simply spray both surfaces you want to join then touch them together for fit, then press for a permanent bond. For sealing the rock face and priming it for paint, use Elmer's white glue, or wood glue mixed 50/50 with water. Sand as needed, and reapply glue. This is necessary if you want to use any "spray can" paints on your foam form, or else the paint will melt your detail. This is why he uses the black mixture, fyi. Elmer's can also be used to stick the loose rocks into the canyon areas, for a lot less money than craft glue. I mix the rocks into the glue mix, stir them up, then apply them into the areas I want, then pepper them with dry rock bits over top. His use of pencil as a way to detail the bridge is wonderful.

Dish soap is a suffricant and breaks the surface tention of the water so it does not bead up. Only use a tiny amount or paint can become tacky

He uses a good tequnicue very realistic simaller way I do mine but I use a paintbrush and get the same effect .

i would not use "just black color pigment" I would use primer black paint + bit watered down white glue mix for strenth and to hide texture of foam especially styro foam

What do you use to glue the sheets together. I use polystyrene foam, the stuff used for packing and can't find an adhesive that doesn't melt the polystyrene.
