R.I.P RUG 🙌🙌🙌🙌

Richard will see this. I hope he reads these comments too. If so, he will read about how I figured out the DRUQS album on my 1944 Conover Fairy Grand limited edition piano. I used spoons on the strings and brass bell metal and played the keys too. I wish he would make more sheet music available for his work. It is obviously inspirational for all of us in this thread. Thank you for sharing. I can’t stop watching. Will definitely share.
That metal-side-up tin makes the beautiful sound that we are all after with analog drum machines. Also, I want to start a Go Fund Me campaign to buy you some new pants.
Love it. This reminds me of a man I met on the street. He made a drum set out of buckets, car lights a shopping cart various bottles of different sizes and a metal lunch tray. He had an extra pair of sticks, so I sat down and played with him. I had never played drums before in my life and the guy was blown away by me. He said "You got rhythm." Maybe that's what got me into making beats, haha.
Electronic music has a natural way of incorporating less than typical sounds. a regular drum kit is so overdone, all sounds are beautiful in context and the glass and tin and higher end hollow kick/toms and crash are just as beautiful as any Ludwig set! Huge props!
I think it just has to do with fullness of sound. For instance it's hard to get enough overtones out of a small tin. But historically the only reason we use animal skins and large resonant metal or wood cavities is so that the drum will be heard over the sound of a large orchestra or the trampling sound of people dancing or marching. But with the invention of the microphone, the main argument that remains in favour of large, loud drums is that of sonic fullness. Tins or bottles in comparison, with their thinner sound (more trebly), evoke the intimate sensation of whispering. In compositional practice, they're just two tools with different uses.
@@___xyz___ Interesting! That makes a lot of sense with the history of music for a live audience, small or large. Perhaps it's why Aphex Twin's music sometimes stands out in electronica, many songs including deep percussion to light percussion tones in a textured way. Many older cultures also has a rich history of exploring the tonal range of percussion I'm learning and have had a major influence once explored and incorporated, and studio recording and sampling helped that come together.
@@jtvj8423 I know this probably sounds pretentious as f, but the exploratory nature of RDJ's music always stood out so me as rebellious, if you know what I mean. Probably because he's a highly creative guy he constantly tries to break free from the mediocrity of repetition. That may be one of the most basic reasons why he ends up mixing sounds from wildly different worlds, I think.
