The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This sounds like a Russian folk song, I'm genuinely surprised it became so popular more than 50 years ago. All that talk of the Red Menace you know.

You are correct! It is "The Long Road" or "Дорогой длинною" in Russian. The English lyric version recorded by British singer Mary Hopkin in 1968 and was #2 in the US. So by the time of this show, it was already known to the audience who probably had no idea of it's origins.

I think the song became popular because it was a great song. It also came along at the right time. With all the upheaval in the late '60's, and the changes in music, a lot of people were longing to go back to a simpler time. In addition, everyone can relate to wanting to go back to the past when they were young. "Those Were the Days" was not only a great-sounding song; it struck a chord with a lot of people.

@@TomElvisSmith Song has a very interesting history. Paul McCartney heard it in Greenwich Village and some years later he produced the Hopkin record as the first Apple release. Look up the Wiki article on Eugene Raskin for some good stuff.

@@MostlyBrenda Just have to correct you on something as I'm a big fan of Mary; Mary's last name is Hopkin. A lot of people mistakenly add an S. If I remember correctly, the first English language version of "Those Were the Days" was recorded by the Limeliters and released on an LP in the early '60's.

@@TomElvisSmith Thanks, Tom - corrected. Mary sang it on TESS on 27-Oct-1968. No offense to Jerry, but that's the one I want to see.

Recorded live at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. Thanks so much for posting this; Jerry was one of the best! He also sang "Till" on this episode which I hope you will also post. "Those Were the Days" was one of the biggest hits of 1968 (and became very popular with singers of the time), thanks to the unforgettable recording by Mary Hopkin, who came from Wales. Mary is another one of my favorite singers, and she performed "Those Were the Days" on Ed Sullivan as well, which I hope you will post.

My dad did Ed Sullivan a lot. They were dear friends abd I was wondering where this was shot as it didn’t look like he Ed Sullivan theatre......now, Circus makes sense, I thought it looked liked gamingvtsbles below. He lip synced it as the orchestra was too small. I remember Ed eoukd sit in our backyard on the grass but far from the pool, eith thise reflectors getting a sun tan- quite honestly, as a kid, he scared me but he always sent me Xmas snd birthday presents, from him and Gus lively wife. The rights to his show are protected and guarded by his son-in-las like I protect my dads stuff.

This song was on his Till album, one of my favorites. I really loved remastering his later albums.....as I really don’t spend much time listening to his music.

@@TomElvisSmith I know Ed’s son in law, More as an acquaintance, Sofa is his last name unless I’m conflating his name eith another family friend, the builders of Turnerberry in Florida..... but I digress he’s a smart man and only releases a little bit as a teaser because nobody gets paid really from UA-cam sure they claim they pay royalties now but for 15 years they didn’t and the royalties are embarrassing from what he would get from the sale or I would get from the sale of my dad‘s Music which drives me nuts to see it up here for free when you say you buy a song for a buck from iTunes Apple gets a third of that and the songwriters end up getting about $.14 which they haveWhich they have to split 50-50 with the music publisher plus the musicians get a fear of that of a piece of that Siri and of course my dad gets his artist royalty which goes to his estate which I control and all goes to charity the Jerry Vale foundation for the performing arts so anyone who posts music or encourages others to are taking away from good things not just performing arts

I’d honestly suggest you just listen to the recording on the Thill album because back in those days everything was lip-synched even on the Jerry Vale shells that we taped him it was all lipstick even his guests even the stuff that he saying that’s lip-synch Siri plus because the stuff was televised the music and everything was compressed so you don’t get the full sonic range

Those Were the Days" is a song credited to Gene Raskin, who put a new English lyric to the Russian romance song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu"

OMG, not THAT again! Years ago Mary Hopkin did an infamous version of it, with the la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la noise taking up at least half of the running time. *YOU CAN'T CORRECT A MISTAKE BY REPEATING IT!!
