obviously no1 who is saying negative things on this post know not what this song is about. The song is about being peaceful and knowledgeable about the world and how it works, doing what is right for all and not just them selves, and not about being a individual which is totally different. This song is too portray a world where each and everyone of use cares for one another more than themselves and I wouldn't expect the close minded masses to understand whatever label "PUNK" you think you are.
I had a dream of unity where we would walk side by side but today I see that it's only me just tryin' to get by sometimes we strive undeterred to walk as one toward our goals but as people stray toward more selfish ways we see we have no control I had a dream of unity where we would walk side by side but today I see that it's only me just tryin' to get by just tryin' to get by
my brother had recorded this clip in a collection of tape .. I did not like as a kid .. it's been over 10 years ago. now is not boring as I thought in the past. time flys.
I just re-watched this for the first time in a while and I think I have a more complete understanding of it now. One of the most important questions we face as a species is where the proper balance point is between individualism and collectivism. My take-away from the lyrics and images is simply that there are no easy answers to this question - it leaves the true thinker split.
There's a simplie reason why I like them even though I hate people that just complain about unfair situations all the time: I love good music and I don't give a crap about politics. Simple as that.
I never said it was a bad album. Their style has evolved significantly since then ( for the better IMHO). I listen to all types of music from funk to jazz to hard rock. They even their next album Back to the Known in order to show that they moved away from that style. Also, from a producer's perspective there is really no incentive to rerelease it as most BR fans consider the album a nostalgic piece as opposed to anything with real musical value. Few would buy it. Few would listen to it.
I heard 'Into the Unknown' of course. It has cool stuff, I downloaded it off a P2P way back in the day and put it on a cd-r. It's definitely not worth the bills just to get the original Vinyl of it (if you can even play it) but it is a cool album. I dig songs like "the Dichotomy, Chasing the Wild Goose, Million Days, ...When you Give Up" etc. Their newer stuff is just fine too though. I don't get where you are going there.
@unassumption Glad we're on the same page there :). As for the technology issue, we currently have far too many financial instruments and economic indicators for any planning board (or computer program) to account for. The Federal Reserve has plenty of models to account for all this, but in more cases than not, humans usually dont fit perfectly into the assumptions their models build off. Yet behavioral economics is still a newborn field..so there is still hope. its just not here yet.
punk music has always been about thinking for yourself it just so happens greg graffin came along and gave it political direction. A direction that gives reason, meaning and thought.. unfortunately as we come to terms with our own personal dissertation of the world we come to realize that "the rest" are and always have been more powerful than ourselves... there is always a price
I Had a Dream of Slavery Where we'd be chained side by side But today I see Its just my collectivist dream Just trying to get by Sometimes we strive Just for ourselves But we must walk as one And for others goals Because as people stray Towards more selfish ways We see we cannot control
gas molecules don't fit into the ideal gas theory at all but it still works...to a useful point. even if humans don't fit the assumptions of economics it can be useful - to a point - but its weaknesses must be adressed and no one wants to do that. I doubt behavioral econ can do that well (quantum chemistry is overlooked in favor of simpler models that can acount for behavior of millions of things easier like molecular mechanics) for the number of ppl around - we need accept limits of theory imo
@BringBRToTheUK I happen to think this is very punk, punk isnt a specific genre of music, its about questioning and opposing any authority because you feel they are doing wrong, these lyrics are basically doing that so this song is just as "punk" as any other hardcore songs.
The concept of anarchy is mainly used in International Realations research in order to define types of governments and idologies. True anarchism is something we can not exactly imagine, since we all live in a society governed by laws enforced by authority. Those who claim anarchy by breaking those laws will still have to face them even though they claim to be an anarchist. Now punk, it can be defined as being an individual and living life your own way, while not adhearing to the main stream.
@Korey1989 Interesting point, and I agree as far as the lyrics, but I think the imagery of the video clearly shows a discomfort with *totalitarian* collectivism.
They have everything to do with each other. Social darwinism is the belief that the best and most worthy succeed and those who're unworthy reap their just reward. Calvinism, or maybe more specifically predestination is the belief that what happens to us is pre-determined by God. They're two very similar concepts and Social Darwinism as a school of thought sprung from Calvinism.
@unassumption I never said we need to overcome selfishness. thats human nature. we need a system that guides that selfishness in a more goal oriented way as opposed to profit maximization and material affluence. behavioral economics even shows that at a certain point too much choice becomes more of a burden and opportunity costs add up. smoothing out the income distribution removes unnecessary choices and a planning board can remove unnecessary substitutes. the only question is what the Goal is.
@michaelkubasek1 You can feel an emotion but realize its not worth acting on If you want to maximize the things you want that you get, in the long run. But when you feel the emotion you can say stuff. If it won't hurt you, why not? If someone says something stupid, or is guided by principles that you'd be better off if people didn't follow, why not criticize them? If something benefits the masses, chances are you'll benefit from it, being one of them.
as stated before...we would have to unite around specific amibitions and goals. no one would earn less and have less of a chance to pursue individual goals unless they acted against the bigger goals. Even still, there would have to be lesser "choice" in order to cut costs. Not convinced that would be a good idea? check this out: ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice.html
@BringBRToTheUK Punk isn't specifically a music genre, it started out as rock that questioned authority, so yes, i do believe fuck you by lily allen could be punk since it's the mind set and lyrics that question aithority, not the particular instrumentals and singing of the song.
@GaribaldiInTheMaking We don't have to overcome selfishness - socialism will only work when its the selfish thing to do. Not sure if it is, but far more mixed markets work best. Totally agree on need to reform politics before command can work. But with companies legitimately too big to fail (natural mono or oligopolies and monospomies) why should the reward be concentrated and risk spread out? Why not buffer the effects of chance by providing nesecities? We have the tech IMO not the motive :(
@GaribaldiInTheMaking well couldn't disagree with that, misinterpreted what you were saying. Being animals we've got a lot of needs i'd say fulfilling them for everyone would be part of any legitimate goal.
@GaribaldiInTheMaking systemically we should be as simple as possible and no simpler. same politically i say. We work for things we don't need just as status symbols, produce pollution in all manufacturing and waste our lives on work that we don't really need rather than share the stuff we do need around. Hunter gather life is too simple = we'd die young of easily preventable disease though we could still live even in that simplicity. But something simpler than what we got now would be better.
@unassumption right. except behavioral econ isnt rooted in theory, its rooted in psychometric experimental data. emotions will soon be quantified. the data available has some policy implications but it is still experimental, the technology to implement these policies just isnt here. imagine each person having a ticker above their sink telling them exactly how much money they need to maximize their utility (too much can be worse)--and accurately! that alone would change the way people live.
@HeadHunteR1988 i'm of the same ideas as you thrust me i understand what you're saying and i agree whole heartedly but unfortunately even the system i'm sure both of us have an idea about and i'm fairly sure mine is very similuar to yours can still be abused because not everybody has the same set of ethics as people like us have people are to random for any system to work perfectly (granted ours would work better lol ) i agree with you but everybody is not like us
"I had a dream of unity, where we would WORK side by side"? "I always thought it was "WALK side by side". Although it doesn't make that much of a difference in the lyrics context I guess...
@Mxlsptlk Mountains of money probably help. Oh, and that no conscience thing might help too. Or it could be the guilty don't feel guilty, they learn not to. (I stole that from a NoFX song)
I think some of the comments you guys are leaving for this video debating the meaning of this song, arguing with one another are missing the point so entirely. Lyrically this is about there being no easy answers to our human predicament in any one "true" ideology! and yes as far as the video it is at least partially an indictment of the horrors of inhuman and totalitarian collectivist philosophies i.e. Stalinism, and this from a group of admittedly left leaning guys. BR are anti-dogma.
@horismoku i am libertarian communist / anarchist.. i focus on money existance.. we have our way to organise economic political system that it does not base on human to human abuse..
@thunder33327 Is not your action a contradiction to such Nihilistic ideas? You say that you do not care what happens before yet the poster IKikeTheThingsIDo has obviously struck a nerve in your values and/or your morals so you respond. If you did not care about what happens after you die then you would not post because such things are futile. I am not trying to sound hostile or approving of the argument on any side, just to say your logic seems flawed.
nice message. Everybody should listen to bad religion. They're the best

One of their best songs ever. LOVE it
This gave me shivers ^.^ haven't listened to the song in like a year. BAD RELIGION!!!
wow...just...wow
I still have that dream, UNITY!!!
Oh wow, I never knew this was shown on MTV. That's a pretty cool video too. Great song.
beatiful
I had a dream of unity
where we would walk side by side
but today I see that it's only me
just tryin' to get by
sometimes we strive undeterred
to walk as one toward our goals
but as people stray toward more selfish ways
we see we have no control
I had a dream of unity
where we would walk side by side
but today I see that it's only me
just tryin' to get by
just tryin' to get by
Tested has three studio tracks. The songs "tested", "It's Reciprocal" and "Dream of Unity". In the US, "Dream Of Unity" is found on TESTED only.
One of my favourite B.R. songs, class.
my brother had recorded this clip in a collection of tape .. I did not like as a kid ..
it's been over 10 years ago. now is not boring as I thought in the past.
time flys.
good stuff
This song is so frikkin awesome!!!! It's been playing almost nonstop in my head for two days!!! All BR's music is that powerful!!!
Wow, that Suffer-aknowledgement was truly amazing! Great song and video :)
Oh man I missed the Suffer boy at the end the first time. That was awesome.
I just re-watched this for the first time in a while and I think I have a more complete understanding of it now.
One of the most important questions we face as a species is where the proper balance point is between individualism and collectivism. My take-away from the lyrics and images is simply that there are no easy answers to this question - it leaves the true thinker split.
anthemic.
OMG! This video is soooo old, when on MTV was real music xD
Hah, times when MTV put songs like this.. now it's all about freakin' pop.
The first time I listened I didn't like it either, but the second time... I realized how beautiful and meaningful was this melody
Great song, Great band.
amazing!
I agree-- first time I didn't like this song that much. Now I find myself singing it somedays when I haven't even heard it in some time.
omg sweet song, and i loved the ending...Suffer
muito foda a musica e o clip
LUTHER KING AND YOUR FIGHT OUR HEARTS FOREVER...
There's a simplie reason why I like them even though I hate people that just complain about unfair situations all the time: I love good music and I don't give a crap about politics. Simple as that.
Is that an mtv logo? Is this back when they not only played music but good music? I can't even remember that time.
I never said it was a bad album. Their style has evolved significantly since then ( for the better IMHO). I listen to all types of music from funk to jazz to hard rock. i agree
older stuff better live
new stuff is mind blowing
I heard 'Into the Unknown' of course.
It has cool stuff, I downloaded it off a P2P way back in the day and put it on a cd-r. It's definitely not worth the bills just to get the original Vinyl of it (if you can even play it) but it is a cool album.

Its from "Tested" says so at the start of the video.
Yay! A couple more hours until I get to go see them at Warped Tour! :D
first time I've ever even heard this one. Sounds almost Into the Unknown-esque, and not in a bad way
I lol'd at the Suffer kid at the end.
OMG
wow great close to the video
This version is definitely not the version found on Tested. Dream Of Unity was released as a single, so this might be the studio version.
LonelyAtTheTop79 they are both studio recordings. This one is one key lower in pitch and included backing vocals, but anyway, both studio recordings
I need it where can I find it I have too have all their stuff
yeah this is from 'Tested' but where's this video from?? is it official? i really like it
Strikes me as "Animal Farm" meets Tienanmen Square. I like it.

I Had a Dream of Slavery
Where we'd be chained side by side
But today I see
Its just my collectivist dream
Just trying to get by
Sometimes we strive
Just for ourselves
But we must walk as one
And for others goals
Because as people stray
Towards more selfish ways
We see we cannot control
I like that. Left-leaning libertarian. I was looking for a way to classify myself.
I have a dream, that israel and palestine may try to live in peace, no war, FREE PALESTINE!
The last 10 seconds sounds just like Buzum`s tune "Dunkelheit" thy use same sound picture with their guitars.. .

Okay, how can we help you? It'll be difficult for me, considering I don't live in the UK.
TF I haven't heard this ever
I mean, where is this VIDEO from? It must be unofficial..

@bohs1984 You still preachin? Fightin the power? Stickin it to the man? You still haven't listened to the song yet.

@loard14 Good one, youre right
The comments on BR videos are some of the only ones worth reading on all of youtube.

you forgot one point. it could work also if all the people would flush their ambitions and dreams down the toilet.
@kevydlad True that.
@michaelkubasek1

Working Class Unity Against Capitalism! We can do it COMRADES!
what is, in your opinion, so wrong about everyone working together towards a common goal and nobody gets left behind?
@pbrskater26 Are you sure, my friend????

The word is neutral. Listen to the video again and try to see what I am.
The video reminds me to comunistic propaganda videos.
Great video and great song !!
@unassumption Hence the goal of socialism- a new united motive. what that motive is can be broad and unassuming :).
It is a shmae that they are not more people like EPacalyptic
This video is bad religions version of the peodigy's "fire" video lol!
