- This is when breaking was first taking off.And we wanted to prove to the Olympics that we were ready to take on the floor execises. And beat them but they got scared. But one day they would make it a sport.I believe it to this day watch and see!!!
"Who knows... someday you could be a Olympic event" how true those words were. Look at all this time later now in the 2024 Olympics breakdancing is set to be an event.
Only a couple more years to go.
Where are they NOW ?
just one of many ways for americans to get more gold medals...
@@emillyyelen5169 not likely. Koreans are ace
I personally know Robert Taylor who played Lee from Beat Street and I know Mister wave personally and they are both still dancing to this day
Vic Ski here. I'm the kid next to the boom box with the cool Adidas and colored Lees, time stamp 2:41. Anyhow a shout out to the Floor Masters in Kingsbridge. Great neighborhood with a beautiful mix of people. We had the Irish, Jewish, Polish, Greeks, Puerto Ricans, Italians, Dominicans, Jamaicans, African and Caribbean Americans, and all of them had their part in making the Hip Hop, B-Boy, Dance, Music, visual art, Clothing, and language what it is today. Word up! Before that time we were all wearing Converse, Pro Ked, and Skippys for a 1.99. Our culture, put Adidas, Pumas, Kango, name chains, and belt buckles, and monogram ball caps on the map.
Vic G I was around there at the time.. You know if you Google about the awesome Lee pants you can't found nothing about it..I'm making a collection in HipHop old gear outfits but can't found no Lee pants no where..is crazy how there's is no actual Lee pants commercials or thing like that..I'm willing to pay top money for any Lee pants..anyone has some of them please contact me..$$$
Edgardo, I sure wish I had my old Boom Box and Cazal eyewear. They cost three times the price used now then what I paid new for. Yikes. Wish you the best.
I feel you on the Lee jeans. But there out there you just have to look. I have the white ones, royal blue ones, and the burgundy pinstripe ones. Like you have to look. Peace Bboy Poise1.
Vic G big up to the FMDs
Thanks for sharing man. Keeping it real. Brings back memories. Greeting from Europe.
These are the creators! and I'm proud when I say I knew them! Lil Lep was my good friend's Cynthia's guy for a long time! I remember when a piece of cardboard and music would make Benny, P-man, Anthony and Lil Ray dance...that's all it took. My two sons have always been inspired by your dancing moves NYC breakers! Beat Street has been a movie I always treasured even though they didn't give u the credit nor the $ that was deserved! My son Jon Lock is 24 n dances like Mr Wave, props to all of u!
Lep is in the ICU now at the hospital. He needs all the prayers he can get. He is family. Take care.
these guys are legendary, lot of legendary people have come out of KINGSBRIDGE NY,,, so great to see this.
These guys were our Heroes. There was no dance studio back in the 80's to learn at. We watched the NYC breakers over and over to learn the moves. It was tough, but we loved it. It's a challenge against yourself to learn. Thanks I thought I had seen all there footage but never saw this one!
Bruce Lee said, the greatest opponent you face....is mostly yourself. Profound statement and very true
And don't forget, FloorMasterDancers, is the foundation of NYCB. 💯
I'm glad I was born in the break dancing era. Word Up!
to nesNYC this is
Powerful Pexster NYC Breakers I'm in my 40's and I'm still breaking so I am still the powerful Pex and blessed to rock the moves I made up so if I could do it when your my age you can do it!!!
powerfulpexster You know Mr Wave
How about now? You were one of our Heroes! Your floor work - not just your moves - was awesome!! One of the guys in our crew (in Canada) patterned himself after you!! If it wasn't for NYC Breakers, we would likely never had learned. We would watch your videos together as a crew and then rewind and watch rewind and watch until we figured out how to do da move😁👍👍👍
Big ups to you!! I'm hittin' on 51 and I can't do half of my moves today lol. I can give you one pop without something really popping lol and half a windmill lol. The 80's was a great time to be alive
you wery FCK hero now I can say hi Mr power fulplexster keep it real
Bro where you at???
Let us all know you good
I loved breaking and pop locking. This golden era can never be replicated. This art form gave young urban youth a voice, something to be proud of when the rest of society could care less. The significance of this movement can not be measured in words. Hip hop and the B Boy culture showed the world that the best flowers can grow and blossom in the most difficult of circumstances. The ghetto and Poverty could not stop the creative ability that was hidden inside these youth. It was an organic grassroots movement that was pure in form before it went mainstream. Despite it all, I am proud to say that I lived through this time in history. The style of dress, speech, and socialization was unique and gave a lot of us an identity to proud of.
Well said. 💯
HEY NYCBreakers! This was on Kingsbridge BX. we all lived there! The best time of my life. Because of y'all I was on "Beat Street" the movie. R.I.P. to Matt. Man I would love to see y'all.. Much Love

I'm 47 now all I got left are my wind mills back spin I lost my float I was dope in 1982,83 I felt after that it went commercial
Same
boricua arecibo I was there too.. I was from the Bronx and Utuado PR. When I was in Utuado we use to go to Arecibo, Camuy Hatillo to burn in the fiestas patronales..from Arecibo I use to battle Farina, El alemán, El calvo, FatBoy the El Cotto. I was really advance for Puertorican bboys at the time.. those days was the shit.
Same age ... same sentiment ... I was a B-boy at the same time, it was nothing after 1984 ...
What up brothas... I was part of Crash Crew Chicago we had the pleasure to battle Rock Steady at the Rainbow Chicago. Lisa Lisa was the host that night . i would say we were tied in the battle but then Crazy legs came out with his windmill to backspin back to windmill move but thats when we le loose our secret weapon. His nick name was and still is secret. Secret did his blow you out the water power move which was windmill which we called the helicopter to an amazing headspin back to a helicopter to a backspin then ended with a crazy crab walk. Lisa Lisa declared us the winners. Nevertheless there was much love and respect for Rocksteady and it was and honor to meet crazy legs mister wave and the other brothers. Such great times! It got us off the corner and it stopped the gang banging for a while. Great times...
You can still wind mill at 47! That's awesome! I stick to updancing now lol.
The 80’s will always be the greatest decade in my book. I also want to point out that Latinos have been a part of rap and hip hop culture since day one!
Facts
WOW, I can't believe I found this video. I used to be in the same class with Chino and Mathew (R.I.P.) back at JHS 143 in the BX. I remember those days like yesterday. I also remember when the cardboard box would open and the show would begin, crazy legs was insane !!! Man, those were the days! I don't know if Chino would remember me if he saw me but he was a great kid back then. What's up Chino? From Louie Ahmetaj (JHS 143 + JFK HS)
Crazy Legs is a Snitch who gave up Kuriakis location.
Was class mate of Tony at Jhs 143

God Bless the Ricans and blacks for this present to society ;o)
Johnboy You're absolutely correct... it is a gift. HELL BLACKS GAVE AND ARE THE SOUNDTRACK AND COLORFUL ARTISTIC BACKROUND OF THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE!!! FACT!
No just the blacks the hispanics copy us
Derreck Jones WRONG!!! You never heard of Cholly Rock or the Black Spades
Derreck Jones The gangs were already doing it in the 70s it didn’t get commercialized until the 80s
It was black and Puerto Rican, but African American youth started in the early 70s ( Zulu Kings and Jr Black Spades)

I went to School Samuel Gompers (Bronx) graduated class 1978 and witness Break Dancing and rap for the first time. I took some of the first Rap (Wasn't called that in the 70's) music with me into Basic Training, Fort Gordon Ga. Those of us in the military helped spread rap and break dancing before the art was known. I could still see the faces "What the bleep is he doing?" Guys in the South were like..."Why is that guy talking with the record" LOL But these guys changed the world.
My dad when to Samuel Gompers!!! Class of 1982! Small world 🌎 😌! He might have been a freshman in your senior year.

When did he died?
4:46 - "Who knows. Maybe someday it will be an Olympic event."
Keep it street, keep it art and expression...never a sport. Always underground artistic expression, not acrobatics. That is the dance that I grew up with and loved all my life. Peace from NYC.
Bruce Lee often spoke about self-expression in many interviews....if you can really show yourself through self-expression, and be true to yourself, that my friend is very special. Something along those line.
And now I have a reason to watch the Olympics 🤷
I'm in rural South Carolina. I went to a local festival parade. The local high school had their "school pride squad" come through in the parade. It was breakdancing. They carried along a cardboard for the dance surface and put it down every so often to dance. It was so awesome. I hope they still have a breakdance squad.
God the were the best times hanging out on the corner or in the shopping centre breaking, about 16 batteries for the beat box 😝

INDISCUTIBLE,LOS MAESTROS DEL BREAKDANCE POR SIEMPRE.
I knew elctric boogie n break dancing when I was 15 in 1981. I was so crazy about it n started to practice from simple to even greater moves. At first it only me who was doing the moves, poppin' in school but later on several of my friends were interested , so we started dancing on streets in Amsterdam ( leidseplein) n The Hague centrum.
Poppin' n break dancing was a pandemic, kids, youths were all jammin. Let a lone we my family moved to Tokyo, it was even better since every sunday in Harajuku , they closed the street just for people to xpress their talent. Yeeaah...electric boogie, poppin' n breakdancin' was fantast those days n still is.
Em 1984 vi esses caras no cinema dançando no filme beat street ....nunca mais esqueci....São Paulo, Brasil
@powerfulpexsternycb respect and props to ya pexster! i always give mention to pexster and even lil alex, when i get asked for tutorials or power tips i always give a small history mention, and NYCB was always a big inspiration for me.. even today im 23 and i do like one handed airflares etc- yo its just the move that lil alex was doing way back but with one hand- :D so yeah thanks pexster and to your homies that i dont know, props and respect to the pioneers and innovators..

I met Chino Lopez around 2008 at Star Fitness in The Bronx..really cool dude.
I think the Rock Steady crew has programs for young kinds over in Hunt's Point in the youth center.
NYC breaker's might have something similar but those dudes are in their 40's not (like me :) and probably not breaking anymore.
I remember I was 7 8 grabbing bog boxes and breakdancing in those Block parties in Brooklyn. Court St had some crazy block parties.
Much Gratitude
And now that dream became reality!! Thank you to NYC breakers and all the bboy community for being an inspiration and then keeping that dream alive!!!
Funny how time flies , and more crazy that breakin' is going to the Olympics ! I personally feel that Breakin' isn't a sport , it's a dance that's competitive like a sport , but doesn't belong in the Olympics...it belongs to the Streets.
It was never intended for shows ...about creativity, music and battling. Also it is rockin! If you want to stay old school.
Awesome times.
@19daze98 Hey well Crumbs had long hair back in the day too. haha. But yeah thanks yo. It was season 2, and I made it to the finals on that show and den quit. I only wanted to prove I could make it so that was good enough for me. Plus SYTYCD was interfering with other stuff dat I wanted to do.

Im Lebanese and I like Puerto Rican's lol
In Puerto Rico they used to call us Gringos or tecatos becuse the way we used to dress and the earrings and the pony tails that in Puerto Rico at the time was not accepted yet.. Lolo saludos mi pana.
Johnny Rutz we didn't started but we was there when it started in the upper 70s we just make it more like the way it got famous. The one that start this stop dancing in the 70s and we Puertorican kept the dance alive and perfected to what is today's or in this film.
Johnny Rutz All this videos were not the beginning... Floor dancing was from way back in the mid 70s and it slowdown..that's when we kept it and improved on what was already done. Look it up and you will see..I was there too. And I remember this was the second wind of this .
Johnny Rutz how can I hate my own people just dig into it..I mean what are you..I'm Puertorican and I know what I'm talking about.
yup that dream is going to be real in 2024 Olympic

how's the speed now Stuntz?
@@edgardosoto4193 doesn't matter, I'm now 45, and still enjoying what I can do. As you get older you have to be a realist and accept your body changes as you get older. Be grateful you can still do a few moves, rather than none at all. It's not always about bouncing around catching your spit upside down in the air. Enjoyment.
@@edgardosoto4193Yeah I'm slower now. I'm only seeing this message now. But that's cause I'm injured. I don't feel like age slowed me down in the sense dat my body is slower because of it. I lose speed when I am not training as much or inury. I still dance though and I do it for a living. The good thing about injuries, is it forces you to work on other stuff. My popping, locking and waving is much better now. Once I recover from injuries, I'll be able to break faster, and do funk styles.
@@millsbomb007 slow cause of injuries.

How wrong they were about not being able to break when you are older. I'm pushing 40 and I can still rock.
I'm from Birmingham......did body popping and locking
This report is so false. Breaking never replaced violence. The whole battle ideology is just a made up hype. Look at the statistics, there were lots of street violence going on in the midst of the breakin' era. As a matter of fact it was really bad during the 80's in NYC. Ideological it could have been about the dance but it never was. Violence has always been around and the hiphop culture never managed to turn that around. It never aimed to either. It was just art, music and dance.
Not true it curbed a lot.
It was some violence not as bad as you claim ... I’m sure you mean when crack came in , & that was after break dancing

4:46 - That sentence is now answered as breakdancing will be an Olympic event at the Summer Games in Paris in 2024.
I wonder who the judges will be
like everyone imitating how we grew up this era is
Only if today was dancing instead of switch blade .. oh yea and the guns
We could sure use this today with all the violence.
Bboying in the Olympics is a complete joke, another way to kill the art & return it back to its commercial name "Breakdancing". I started Bboying in the Uk in 1982, & carried on for 36 years, I saw & did a lot of things. What we as bboys back then did live, was true hip hop just like in the video. We had nothing, opportunities rarely ever existed, it was about the love of the dance, the ability to create something out of nothing, the 8hr plus everyday training sessions, the battling with your crew, the putting the little money you had together to buy batteries for the ghetto blaster "Shit didn't last long if you had it on too loud, & much more. I could just reel off many stories all day long about the real hip hop Bboy history.
To me, the Olympics just look like a circus sideshow but that's not going to stop it. It is what it is now but, I'd never support something like that, it's so far from the original Bboying/Hip Hop art & atmosphere.
People should also stop calling it "Breakdancing" as to me you are disrespecting the original artform of Bboying.
40 years after this call-out, breakdancing will debut as a competitive olympic sport in Paris in 2024.
40 years later hip hop culture and breakdancing still thrive after quickly spreading across the world and inspiring millions of people.
40 years later we will get to see B-boys and B-girls on the biggest stage the world has to offer. Finally! And righteously so.
damn props for calling em out like tha yo
