Many anime-to-game adaptations struggle to capture the essence of their source material, often falling short of fans' expectations.
However, I recently discovered an exception to this trend: Demon Slayer: Hinokami Chronicles. More specifically, the finishers.
This game not only stays faithful to the original anime but also boasts some of the best anime-style animations I have ever seen in a game, using some pretty creative animation tricks to make it look like an actual 2d anime.
And today, we’re going to learn exactly what those tricks are.
Welcome to the next episode of Stylized Station.
Pretty cool video. I actually was on the dev team for Demon Slayer in 2020. It was my first game in the industry. Good times!
hey, from an aspiring game developer still in highschool, what was it like working on a game like that?
really? that's impressive man
thats pretty cool
thank you for your hard work! great game ^^
That's pretty cool! Did you play a rol in the game rendering pipeline/shaders that made the style possible? The art direction there was really nice!
OnePunchMan season 1 feels like it's 50% impact frames
hahaha yes
it was
You're not wrong.
Wano eps nowadays
it's not.
It's wild how I've watched anime for over 20 years and something like smearing was right in front of my eye but I never consciously processed it until this video explained it to me. Now I can't unsee it.
CyberConnect 2 has been doing this style for years. They did the animation for the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games and many others so they've basically mastered this style of animation seen here so I personally wasn't worried about it looking like Jump Force as CyberConnect 2 has shown what they can do in the past with their other games. They know how much style plays into their ultimate attacks and want to capture that
They are the best when it comes to visual style. I wish they would improve their focus on gameplay and mechanics variability
i just wish they were not forced to do garbage shonen anime arena fighters, i really wish they could continue their original series like .hack
@@mpo48imo the Naruto storm saga is pretty good
@@patoastral2118 no it's not, it's absolute trash
@@mpo48 eh shit opinion
stylized station ability to compliment the videos topic with the editing is just.... *chefs kiss 🤌
never heard a truer statement
Dude this fighting game is SOOO flashy and it indeed really looks like the anime, which is why I like it so much
My favorite thing about smearing in 3D animation (my best friend doe 3D animation so I sometimes watch them work) is that all those smears are actual 3D objects and put in frame by frame. So you got this character model with a ton of smears inside their body hidden until needed.
I thought I was on the wrong channel with this intro lol. Great topic to discuss and explain. I think Anime look and cel shading shaders are really hard to achieve without looking "bad". Love how a lot of studios start to add hand drawn impact frames and other visual trick to get the anime look.
His editing was always good but ever since his last video it has leveled up immensely
I feel similar things about Naruto Shinobi Strikers. I picked it up again 2 days ago after 3 years and my god the effects and texture work makes all Storm games look like Play-Dough with bad shading. Outlines are a strong tool to make a game look more cartoony and the multi coloured rough textures alongside smooth animations rly make me appreciate the game visually. Really wish we'd get more single player games like that
you are right... animations and particles effects have that anime feeling, but i think those shaders used for coloring the shadows in characters were not implemented correctly.
and also the environment elements could be better.
Cyberconnect2 never fails when it comes to visuals
Yeah even companies with more money and tech don't have anime visuals down nearly as well
How did they get a 3D game to look like the anime? THE ANIME ALREADY USED THAT SAME 3D EFFECT
exactly in the show most of that is entirely in CG already. probably just said hand over the .FBX files :D
@@marquisshepherdnop it wasnt 3d
@@patoastral2118 it is 3D just hand drawn and animated in 3D, things like blenders grease pencil is a good reference
The same way geats made itself look like an anime despite being live action, *GODLIKE PHACKING EFFECTS TEAM*
Did they draw the realistic fire in the background in that one episode of S2?
summary: the game was made with passion, that's why
I really hope more anime games use similar techniques seen in hinokami chronicles. The game is gorgeous to look at and I was immediately interested after seeing the first reveal for the game. I vividly remember thinking "wow, this looks just like the actual anime."
Its always a treat getting a new video. This one was really cool.🙂
I wonder if the flipbook effects are done through a transparent plane or another shape in the 3d environment.
There's 2D layer called "canvas" that is in front of the camera
Song name: Hoshifuru Yoruni
Thanks, was looking for it mentioned anywhere in the video/description.
Great Video! I enjoyed it a lot
Hey Stylized Station, love the videos
I've got a question about the course,
Does the course have any texture workflows and optimization videos?
I'm curious about material instances in unreal vs substance painter/designer, and when to use dynamic textures vs trim sheets
Thanks for this video made me research more even on impact frames
very very useful video, you just unlocked the knowledge to make animations look good🥰😍
Ive learned so much from you, cant wait to make a project to show everything ive learned from you owo
What's the anime at 3:10? (For the future, I would add title cards in the bottom left of the screen)
Nice video. Great editing.
globku has a video showing a breakdown of how they did it by moving the in game camera away from its intended angle. It gives a deeper insight into the tricks used to composite the shot. May be useful for a pt2.
Most likely they use sequecer to create this kind of finishing Skill VFX. So it more easy and can be more dynamic with more control, since is a comp.
but there are a few trick you can use to create those. If you use are in the game dev for long enough you may know how~
Hello , great video by the way. I’d like to ask what the ending song name is ?
i wonder if epileptic people actually survived this video because god damn it looks as good as it blinded me XD
Zenitsu Style: Amazing
Zenitsu as a character: EDP 💀
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
That's completely incorrect, don't talk like that
Thank you very much for this super inspiring video.. super cool
THIS GAME LOOKS AND RUNS FANTASTIC ON SWITCH
First time watching ur video the opening was fireeeeee
Great vid! Any chance you'll dip into Arc System Works games? (Guilty Gear Strive, FighterZ, Granblue, DNF)
Amazing video, What was the song used in the opening?
thanks for video
good vid man
Very useful video.
I wonder how this could be accomplished in a game engine such as Godot for a 3d game.
bro sick video!!
Super interesting video.
BTW what is the song name of the intro and outro?
same
Song name: Hoshifuru Yoruni
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
I hope you consider taking a look at ArcSys games too, still about this subject or something similar in your future videos. :)
I must be getting old. This style of animation reminds me of arcade games like Dragon's Lair, where you would get different animations depending on pass/fail of an event.
I NEED to know where the various clips of animation/anime are from. (like in the title frames, etc)
I was not particularly interested in Demon Slayer, but thanks to you i became interested in this game.
Take a look "Heavenly delusion" opening. I think you will like it style.
whats the song name of your intro? it goes hard
May i have the source material for the fight scene at 1:30 in the video?
Question, with the Demon Slayer special attacks are they pre-rendered cutscenes or was it within the engine itself with a dynamic camera angle?
They have to be real time, otherwise the game would be absolutely bloated with pre-rendered videos that have to account for every single character and map combination
@@ArceusDX I wonder how that could be accomplished with the Godot engine.
@@VoltitanDev Put stuff into viewport (or however you want to achieve screen overlay) and control its visibility within AnimationPlayer for example.
Does anyone know where the animation from 3:11 is from
Can anyone tell me the name of the song that plays at the beginning and ending please.
The AMVs at the beginning and end were fucking killer!
Do you know what anime was in the AMV? I've been looking but couldn't find anything
There were a lot of animes
Spiky pinked haired guy - JUJUTSU KAISEN
Bald guy in yellow suit - One Punch Man
Big guy with yellow hair and blue leotard - My Hero Academia
Blank faced boy with black bowler haircut - Mob Psycho 100
Boy fighting tall robot - Full Metal Alchemist
That's all I could pick out from my memory, some of the more 80's/90's styled animes I'm drawing a blank on and don't know if they're new using an old style or if they're something I didn't see or remember back in the day.
Cheerio
@@okjoz
how do they have line weight in their outlines?? its always confused me
what is that pokemon scene in part 3 of the video from??
Hello that's the cool thing about game design right now you can literally make anything
Where's the pokemon sequence at 5:45 from?
What's the song called at the end of the vid?
what's the song's name at the intro and outro PLZ TELL!!!
Song name: Hoshifuru Yoruni
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
What is the song name at the end?
Whats the opening clip from?? Looks like that dragon ball fan made one with goku chi chi vegeta and broly
im tryna find it too
im personally a little bit miffed when people mention a game looking exactly like anime and dont bring up guilty gear Xrd. not that other examples are bad, but that Xrd somehow pulled this off back in 2014
ArcSystemWorks are masters at this.
Great video thank you! So all those complaining about 3D/CG can’t look as good as 2D, this has proven otherwise. Of course it can, in the right hands!
Also if you let me know the Title of the Song, 5:35, I would really appreciate it. ~!
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
My only problem is that these anime games are arena fighters (a sub genre of 3d fighting games) instead of ANIME FIGHTERS (a sub genre of 2d fighting games that are usually more fastnpaced with longer combos and lots of movement and usually kinda hard to play but it does not have to be hard to play, some examples are blazblue, guilty gear, and dragon ball fighterZ) im just tired of anime games being arena fighters cause they feel like ultra watered down 3d fighting games (gameplay wise) and whqts worst about this is the company making thse arena foghters is bandai namco creatwrs of 2 of the greatest fighting games of all time being soil calibur and teklen, but they are either just being cheap or goven a small budget and told to make these, but I dont get qrena fighters, they dont feel fun or reqarding to play and traditional fighters are objectively more anime lol, dont get me wrong Im not saying we should abondon arena fighters all together, I just wish shonen or whoever would make a traditional fighter instead lf arena fighters, or even q platform figbter would be awesome, movement is just sl much more free and awesome in traditional and platform fighters compared to arena fighters, unfortunately arena foghtera are cheaper and will get more or less the same amount of buyers
Whats the song of the end of the video?
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
What's the anime/movie at 0:01- 0:02?
I loved this game so much, it could've had more potential if it wasnt so unbalanced :(
What anime is this between pokemon and dragonball at 5:54 and after the text "masterpiece"
Konosuba but if u wanna know the exact frame it's from season 2 finale and it's a isekai/comedy anime that's really good and funny that does have quite alot of fanservice but also cool and fun fights I recommend you to check it out if fanservice in anime doesn't bother you
Fantastic video as always, ¿whats the anime on 3:55 pls? 😁
Samurai champloo!! Great anime
Where do I find the pokemon one?
Did u use letters from val?
Are you going to share the name of the game you used for the entire video or is that a secret?
love the hololive tidbit at 5:49 those animators need as much calling out as they can get
if 3d anime was done like how the games were done. then i would watch. ex. this game and the naruto storm games. they slap for a reason
what's the game at 1:30?
whats your intro song called
1:34 what is the name of this anime again?
did u know?
what is the song in the intro
0:00 to 0:41
Which animes are those (except One Piece, One punch man and demon slayer).
Why
Stylized Station, didn't mention shaders?
or is it just me?
What's the show at 5:49 ???
While you're discussing postproccessed impact frames at the start of the video I'm just staring slack-jawed like "There's a Hitori no Shita game?"
What's the name of the song?
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
Awesome video, like usual, but why making this video costed $564.17? That's a lot a money for a single video. Can you elaborate please? Im really interested.
cyberconnect 2 is just godlike. NS1 was ahead of its time
yo whats that song in the outro bro its fire????
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
Short answer: They drew 2D elements over 3D objects.
Can step by step how I did this anime
What's the opening song
What’s the music at 8:04?
Hoshifuru Yoruni (ft. ZENI & 9maBear)
Whats the intro song?
Special vibe outr9
Hoshifuru yoruni intro
Opening song name?
So what we see in game isn't 3d but overlayed 2d image?
Real 3d simulation are really expensive on your hardware
Name of song in the intro please
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
I would like to know about this from the Naruto Storm 4 game Perspective
can someone tell me the name of that intro song?
Intro is Hoshifuru Yoruni, Outtro is "Special Vibe" by Yarin Primak
Really really thank you , man :)
Cool
although on hinokami chronicles the animation, effects and style are amazing i still dont like the fact that its basically any 3d anime game ever made (like Naruto Shinobi Storm 4 for example), but in artistic terms i could see why they took so long, also i was awaiting the game since 2020 but ended up just not buying it due to that... and the fact it was 60 bucks
Ofc when talking abt impact frames 90% of the footage is from Nakamura.
Outro song ????!!!!
