Malaysia, The Philippines, and Vietnam are Southeast Asia’s fastest emerging economies. As the rising tiger in the region, with an annual growth rate averaging from 4 to 6.5% annually, outpacing other emerging Market in the region.
These 3 countries have almost the same economic size but have different economic setups. Let’s take a deeper look at each country’s economic profile.
Economic comparison
Among the 3 countries, Vietnam has the least nominal GDP amounting to $362.63 billion, but has the biggest Purchasing Power Parity of $1.13 Trillion. Malaysia’s nominal GDP is amounting to $372.7 billion, while its GDP Purchasing power Parity is $970.74 the least among the 3 countries. On the other hand, The Philippines is edging a smaller cap of Nominal GDP amounting to $394.08 billion, while its Purchasing power parity is amounting to $1.01 Trillion.
For its GDP per Capita, Malaysia is considered wealthier among the 3 countries, with a GDP per capita of $11,371, almost 3 times higher than Vietnam’s GDP per capita of $3,694 and the Philippines’ $3,548.
For Gross National Income GNI, the Philippines earned more wealth amounting to $404.23 Billion, followed by Malaysia with total earnings of $358.36 Billion and Vietnam with $349.34 Billion.
In terms of GNI per capita, on average every Malaysian earns $10,930, followed by the Philippines with average individual earnings of $3,640 and Vietnam came closer with average earnings of $3,560. Per market categorization, Malaysia and the Philippines are categorized as newly Industrialized countries while Vietnam is an emerging Developing Country.
Economic Profile and Overview
Vietnam
Vietnam has been a development success story. Economic reforms since the launch of Đổi Mới in 1986, coupled with beneficial global trends, have helped propel Vietnam from being one of the world’s poorest nations to a middle-income economy in one generation. Between 2002 and 2021, GDP per capita increased 3.6 times, reaching almost US$3,700.
Malaysia.
Since gaining independence in 1957, Malaysia has successfully diversified its economy from one that was initially agriculture and commodity-based, to one that now plays host to robust manufacturing and service sectors, which have propelled the country to become a leading exporter of electrical appliances, parts, and components.
Malaysia is one of the most open economies in the world with a trade-to-GDP ratio averaging over 130% since 2010. Foreign trade represented 116.5% of the country’s GDP in 2021 making the country vulnerable to external demand.
The Philippines.
Clean governance, strong leadership, growing infrastructure, and policy endeavors have catapulted the Philippines onto a path of faster growth and emerging as a rising tiger in the region.
The future holds promise as the Philippines has a young, growing workforce that speaks English, has remittances from abroad that are high, and has household debt that is among the lowest in Asia.
Although the Philippine economy grew at a modest pace from the 1980s to the 1990s, the economy has nonetheless seen significant growth in the last two decades.
Its average annual growth in the decade between 2000 and 2009 was 4.6%, and between 2010 and 2019, it shot up to 6.4%. This has moved the country from a lower-middle-income nation with a gross national income per capita of under $1,000 before the year 2000 to $3,548 in 2021, with expectations of further increases.

From a Malaysian,Vietnam impressed me the most,so much progress in short time.
Philippines is also doing very good with their economic growth.Hope all Asean can prosper more in the future.
I'm Filipino, and I'm so happy for the progress attained by Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Still looking forward for the day wherein ASEAN nations would be as rich and prosperous as our East Asian counterparts.
The Philippines GDP is higher compare to malaysia but because of the population over 100 million that's why our PER CAPITA IS LOWER, UNLIKE MALAYSIA THEY ARE ONLY 30 MILLION POPULATION THATS WHY THEIR PER CAPITA IS HIGHER.
@@justinviper7149 well Filipinos still make much lower than Malaysians Im filam btw. Still a lot of catching up to do and I’ve been to Malaysia it’s much more advanced than the Philippines still
@@musikeradaw yes because the phippines is populated country compare to malaysia so even the Philippines higher in GDP nominal compare to malaysia but per Capita still malaysian is higher. Example 1 whole cake you divided in 15 slice than 1 whole cake you divided it 5 so the 5 slice are bigger than 15 slice. Even the GDP nominal of the Philippines is 402 billion USD than malaysia I think 372billion USD if I'm not mistaken but still malaysian people are richer than the Philippines. Because the Philippines needs 850k public teachers to teach childrens but malaysia maybe they need only 300k so the Philippines spent so much in schools buildings, salary of teachers, policemen or enforces the malaysia need only I think 100k policemen but Philippines needs 250k so the expenses in the services is so much to the Philippines that's why the development in infrastructures is lesser.

More than 27M students in the Philippines will resume full face to face classes next month for the first time since early 2020.
The Philippine GDP grew 8.3% Q1 and 9-10% in Q2 despite the long lockdown which affected all Philippine schools.
The resumption of face to face classes will definitely push Philippine GDP growth higher.
But BSP just hiked interest rate to tackle inflation and rescue a faltering peso. High interest means more expensive loans. This may discourage money going into the system and slow down spending and may impact economic growth
Face to face classes affects nothing, only traffic.
@@winzyl9546 mali po kayo, once mag face to face classes na madami ng kikita na mga business at mga transportation providers. Kaya may ang epekto ng ftof, hindi lang traffic.
Small businesses in and around school zones will again thrive, so this will propel MSMEs.
If the Philippines did not experienced contraction in GDP growth in 2020, I think our GDP now estimated in 450 billion USD. The deep contraction of our economy in 2020 because of stricter & longest lockdown resulted in negative 9.6 GDP growth, that's is why we remained in 402 billion USD GDP.

Bong bong Marcus is Pro-China. He'd more likely sell PH to get more cash (and become indebted to CCP, which is a very bad Idea) through back door dealings. Judging from the way he ran his election campaign, which was quite strikingly similar to CCP's used of propaganda in China, I won't be surprise if he is not in Xi Jinping's pocket already. Heck, even the telecommunication infrastructure is now owned by a CCP-owned Chinese company. Then there's those POGO gambling casinos which brought an influx of thousands of Chinese nationals (not the educated kind but one's with shady characters) to employ in those casinos instead of hiring locals.
After his win, China is salivating for PH to be in their pocket and a chance for a strong political influence. PH will be just another victim of the corrupt CCP, being salami-sliced like all the other countries in the world (ie. numerous African nations and Pacific island countries). I pray to god BB Marcus doesn't follow his corrupt parents foot steps, who ran the country to ground and used it like their personal piggy bank. I just hope he continue the economic renaissance and make the country prosperous, strong and stave off CCP influence. We'll have to wait and see.

It's fine comparing these countries, it only becomes bad if we consider each other as rivals. Will it be helpful if we in Asean create our own single currency just like EU created Euro and the BRICS are also attempting to do?
Well, it will drive tourism further. And ease of trade between countries will be much more efficient and transparent. But like all things, this also has its own set backs.
It was possible when Philippines drop it's Sabah claims first...
No no. Single currency will slower the growth of poorer northern ASEAN while it will concentrate power in the richer southern neighbours. Plus the population distribution is much higher in the south, so it will be not so difficult to see that Jakarta, Singapore and KL will dictate the northern countries. We should not copy Euro. Greece should not share the same currency with the economic powerhouse of Europe. The economics of Laos and PH are converged. The economics of Burma and MY is converged. A unified central bank can control monetary union efficiently but how about fiscal union? Should an economic crisis happened, a country should be allowed to devalue their currency to make itself competitive. I personally dont think it is a good option. As much as Greece shouldnt spend like Germany did, I would say, Cambodia shouldnt spend like MY do. The country profile is so converged.
It's always great to hear about multiple countries doing very well. Yes there might be competition but it's in a good way. We pull each other up and strive to be the best without stepping on another country

GDP pretty much measures spending which is correlated with material wealth. Material wealth does not necessarily equate to well being and other ways of human development. For example, in Vietnam, bicycles are a ubiquitous way to get around. It cost a lot of money to buy a car compared with a bicycle which is reflected in GDP. But if you can still get around the same and accomplish the same things, is having a car really so much better? GDP is important, but not the most important thing in determining the quality of life of the citizens.
good public transport is important. Most of the ASEAN countries are not too large so building public transport infrastructure should be the top priority.
Agreed. I would say also public housing would be really beneficial. Many people in SouthEast Asia especially in the Philippines live in informal slums. We can follow the Singapore model of the government creating public housing. But they not only do that, they actually design whole walkable neighborhood communities complete with public services and places to work, shop, and study. Philippines has the same GDP per capita as many Eastern European nations but their poor have much much better housing arrangements which is an actual achievement in the Soviet era.
Car tax in Vietnam is very high. Car in VN 2-3times more expensive than in other countries. That is also one reason why motorbikes are the main means of transport in Vietnam

As a Filipino, the Agricultural sector of my country is almost flatlining. This should be given attention. For sure, Vietnam will surpass the Philippines in no time.

I doubt about the surpassing by Vietnam since PBBM is focusing on agriculture.

In terms of GDP, it's a No. For Vietnam to finally overtake the Philippines, its GDP must grow bigger than the Philippines.
The Philippine GDP is projected to grow bigger than Vietnam this year and in the next 4years.
Add to that the fact that the Philippine economy grew surprisingly high although it's not yet fully open as the Country still has some Covid 9 restrictions in place.
Face to face classes will resume in November for the first time in almost 3 years.
27M students will go back to school and generate tremendous economic activity. It will contribute about 0.7% or more to the growth of the GDP.
One of the major engines of Philippine economic growth is tourism. More and more tourists are now arriving in the Country. This will definitely boost the Country's GDP.
Take note that the Philippines also just recently enacted laws that opened the economy more to foreign capital and investments.
Furthermore, a number of big infra projects are scheduled for completion this year and in the next few years. These infra projects as well as the othe BBB projects completed before Duterte stepped down will reduce traffic congestion and make the transportation of people, goods and services much easier, faster and cheaper. The economic loses of the Philippines due to traffic congestion will be significantly pared down.
For context, JICA estimates that due to heavy traffic, the Philippines lose about 2.1B dollars every month in Metro Manila alone.
Another aspect that should be considered is oil and gas. The Philippines is almost totally dependent on oil and gas imports for its energy needs but it produces very little oil and gas. The Philippines is now developing its own oil and gas fields in Southern and Central Philippines, with foreign investments amounting to billions of dollars.
Oil and gas projects usually take about 4-5years before going online. By 2026-27, the Philippines will already be energy sufficient and energy (fuel, electricity) will become cheaper, which will spur higher economic growth and save the country billions of dollars usually spent on importing oil, gas and fuel products.
Though the Covid 19 pandemic still lingers, more and more Filipinos are getting hired abroad and dollar remittances are at record highs. The ever-growing dollar remittances will not only help keep the Philippine economy afloat but also contribute to the growth of the Country's GDP.
The Philippine economy and Vietnam's will be among the highest performers in the region and in all of Asia.
However, the Philippine economy will grow a shade higher than that of Vietnam's in the coming years.

Ang pilipinas ang may pinakamaraming mall sa buong mundo
