it worked until the actual end result! When you offset your curves vertically, how did you get the horizontal plane? The flat part where someone actually steps on top of

What I think might be happening in your case is when you go to extrude your contour curves, make sure that the solid option is checked in the command line! That way when you extrude them, you get the top and bottom surfaces.
