Fix your Saab Wiper Parking Problem - Easy Repair - Don't Replace!

- This was the fourth time our wiper motor has stopped parking where it should. The first two were fixed under warranty. The third time I did what everyone else does, and replaced the motor. This time I figured out what was wrong and fixed it. It was just a corroded ground. Easy, easy fix for FREE.
During the course of one commute my wipers went from normal to parking vertically. This did the trick! I used a little dielectric grease on the grounding contacts to hopefully prevent future corrosion, and some grease on the wiper sprockets to keep the wiper arms from seizing onto the sprockets. Also, you can just pop the driver arm off the ball joint to get easier access to the nut on the motor, then pop it back on when you're done.
Just did this tonight on my '05 93. Worked like a charm. Saved me a good little chunk of money. Thanks!!!
Ben Hardt Love to hear that!
Thanks, got me sorted out and saved me buying parts. I almost missed the little brass bit to be sanded on the cover, it was completely covered in limescale, which I'm guessing was the problem. The cause of the limescale, I think, was a blocked drain just under the wiper motor, which may have allowed water to pool around the motor. It's perhaps worth checking this drain whilst doing the repair. Thanks very much.
If lawyering ever gets old you'll make a great mechanic!😁👍
This helped me to fix an issue with my wipers on my 93 Aero. Many thanks
This worked for me. Allthough the video do not really show where to grind I just grounded around that same area. Saved me 500 EUR. So thanks! Wouldnt figured this out by myself.
Thank you. I didn't even know how to get the damn caps off the things to unscrew them.
Gracias!!!
De nada. Me alegro de que haya funcionado!
Thank you. It is the correct position. This is helpful for others.
Cheers Matthew, mine come back up an inch past the parking spot, damn annoying, will try this simple fix when I’m off next week. 👍.
Like others commented - be wary if you have 03-06 9-3. There’s no resistor inside and the back is riveted. I drilled them out and don’t see corrosion or grounding issues. I’m going to need to reseal the thing later without the rivets.
Great work, I think I have the same issue with my Dodge Journey 2018, I will try to do your steps tomorrow.
will try later, appreciate your video first
What an awesome video. Got me so excited to finally have parking wipers again. But ohhhh no, Saab has a trick up his sleeve…..SOMEBODY TOOK MY MICROSWITCH OFF😭😭😭 . Yes, no switch at all, I was like this does not look the same…. I see why…. Does anyone know if they sell them? It seems to be almost a “serviceable” part
Awesome. Thanks for the great vid. My 9-3 just started behaving like this. Gonna try it ASAP. :)
So - did you get it fixed yet?
Good video .. got the same wiper problem I think . Had my son try his fix . But he couldn't get one the wiper arm off . Think it's stuck with rust .. have to get one them machcanical pull tools to pull it off ..
Don't know if you'll see this since this video is from a few years ago, was the sprayer also not working? Im just wondering if this will also solve that problem. I had a service vehicle message come up because the guys who changed my oil apparently didn't have the machine to clear that message. And its known to park the wipers and stop the sprayer.. so im just wondering if this is a similar issue that will work but im thinking not... idk
Hi Rachel. Still here. I think your problem is completely different. My sprayer never stopped working. It was caused by a problem with the wiper motor.
You just have to make sure the motor is well grounded at that point.
Thanks for this DIY. I'll try it tomorrow.
Seb Did you get them working?
So I watched your video after drinking. I forgot the step at 5:50 the following day. Instead of just letting it cycle by itself, I left the bracket on and put one of the blades on. Now the wipers are stuck in a different position (When I put on the blade, it went in a different direction and it stopped when it detected too much pressure)
I'm going to revisit this next week. I'm going to try forcing the motor/gear into a different position to see what happens.
I have a strong feeling that it would have worked if I didn't skip that step. I also measured the Ohms and it was at 149.6 meaning the capacitor was good.
Good luck!
Good theory. I just replaced my wiper motor/transmission on my 2008 Saab 9-3 and the full cycle goes from the edge of the cowling up across the windshield but then it comes to rest like 6” up from the cowling. It makes no sense to park at a higher position than the the bottom of the sweep; but that is what it is doing.
Any thoughts 💭?
Any chance you mounted the mechanism in the wrong position?
I appreciate your video and I will put it test. Thanks.
Please let us know if it works.
i tried this and even tried the adjustment that you said did work but neither attempt worked for my 2006 aero. I there anythings else i can try before i have to go and buy a new motor assembly?
Thanks your the king
I have a saab 2007 Aero 2.8L v6 and i am having trouble with the coolant expansion tank i have replaced one it split in half and the coolant was all over the engine then i replaced again about 4 months ago just happened again today, i am getting frustrated with it if you have any suggestion please let me know. Thank you
I could be wrong about this but I believe there was a recall on the coolant expansion tank. I've got the same model and the original coolant tank plastic couldn't take the heat put out by the aluminum engine. There should be an improved version though that handles it fine. Once I had mine replaced I haven't seen the problem again (knock on wood!)
i have the same issue and will try this fix on the weekend. do you know the size ofthe small nuts on the motor?
t20
Just an FYI to anyone attempting this. I have a 2004 9-3 and the component he removed and sanded down the contacts on... At least on my vehicle is riveted to the assembly making it impossible to remove.
That's what angle grinders are for. And anyway -- if it's riveted probably the ground contact is good.
Russell Hanson you wouldn't use an angle grinder on this unit, if anything you would drill them out. I may just purchase a remanufactured unit as it is the issue
Right on. Sounds like you know more about this.
What socket is required to remove the nut on the wiper arm??
13mm
What size were the torx screws to get the motor open?
Thanks
Where are you? I'm in MN and having the same problem on my 05 9-3
our 2006 passenger wiper arm is not moving. it will move freely when you manually move it. any idea?
+Joe B Look at about 1:10 of the video to see how that passenger arm is attached to the motor. My guess would be that it came off there. It is either that or it is stripped where the arm attaches at the base of the wiper.
+Joe B I just traded mine in last night as a matter of fact. My pass side wiper was off the motor as well. I gave up on my 05 93 before it Nicole and dimes me to death.
+Matthew Brenengen ok will do
+Matthew Brenengen Hey what you use to clean the motor and what areas you clean? I have the exact same issue
Dam unfortunately for me shit fell apart like Legos for me.😢no choice but to replace
