If there was a Roman successor state around in 1444, I imagine it would be would be on its last legs. It wouldn’t even necessarily need to exist in Rome, maybe somewhere around Greece? I think Constantinople was a pretty big city in this time period.

I think as narrative scenario It can be interesting to assume that Visigots, who historically were in many cases loyal to Roman culture and state, became power in old corrupt state and transformed Empire once again into Republic. In process other provinces declared independance or were conquered, but those new roman-gothic nobility were able to save its rule in most of Italia peninsula.

Your story is interesting. I think about some things close to this almost every day as I do research into late classical-early medieval history for my work.
During the early 600s the secular duties of Rome were transferred from the Senate to the Bishop of Rome. The feel of what you've done is essentially that instead of the Bishop of Rome rising to power to become the Father of Rome, the republicans of Rome reasserted themselves.
It was likely a difficult task as they fought with the rising Papacy, allowing for the coming and going of external powers in the region; such as the Lombards and the Franks, and also later to have Italy integrated into the Holy Roman Empire. With the influence of the Pope, the Romans still existed, united, but more secular, thanks to the Senate's revival. The Romans challenged the Normans following their invasion of the Eastern Empire, leaving the region improperly defended, allowing the North Africans to reassert their claim to Sicily. Recognizing the need to resist this invasion, and with the Turks threatening Constantinople, Rome coalesces and elects a king to lead them to war. As the Holy Roman Empire fails the Italians, the northern polities harken back to when they were recognized by the Romans as the Western Empire and confederate under this history as the Gothic Empire to resist their German overlords and the increasingly powerful and centralized Holy Kingdom of Rome.
I personally would love for you to shatter the HRE and unite the Romans.

I believe that the Roman Republic should be Orthodox Christians. Maybe in this alternate timeline they would be friendlier to the Eastern Romans and try to follow the same religion.

    • @brofist1959
      @brofist1959 8 місяців тому +1

No, the Western Romans would have been Latins, not Greeks. The split was apparent by the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople in 381, when the Latins were explicitly not invited so thay they could not protest the change of the lead patriarchate from Rome to Constantinople, and everything from there is history. A Western Roman successor state would therefore also be Latin, and therefore what we would understand today to be "Catholic." An Orthodox Western Roman successor state would probably have to be subjugated to the Eastern Romans (Greeks, hence "Greek Orthodox") for it to make any sense.

  • @Quickshot0

If one altered the backstory a little, it could make a lot of sense why Rome starts moving now and not before.
    For instance,
A small Roman rump state managed to survive the collapse of the West Roman Empire, holding the OstroGoths off at Rome and in continued fighting with what ever support they could get elsewhere a final line across defensible terrain formed in the North. After this Rome started working on rebuilding its economy and overall setup in its new situation, changing to some of the old ways.
Then to the South the East Roman Empire started 'reconquering' various lost West Roman Empire territories and incorporating it in to themselves, ending with them taking Southern Italy and making Rome a partially subordinate nation
And as humiliating as is was that Rome of all places was now the lesser of Constantinople, at least they could try and reconquer the north and regain their position in future. But before they could gather enough strength to finally throw the Ostrogoths from the North, the Karlings conquered all the Northern regions under them in a single vast territory. A nation far to powerful to compete with, this was even so when it fractured and had internal troubles.
Still it gave a new opportunity to get out of the humiliating situation with the East Roman Empire, by maneuvering themselves between the two powers and so to become a more independent buffer state. To facilitate this the Pope, of course completely with out their direction offered a Roman crown to the Karlings, so as to make them and the East Romans compete more between each other. Though sadly in time this led to the Pope gaining much power in the northern territories and becoming a continuous point of political problems for the Roman state. Even if it further helped to cement their buffer state existence.
For awhile this continued, the Karlings fractured and reformed, eventually forming their 'Holy Roman Empire', the East Romans got thrown back by the caliphates and first lost Sicily and eventually Southern Italy to them.
And with the weakening of the East and growing power of the North, a religious fracture started to form between both sides as well. With the Romans of course staying with their Pope and being a proper Catholic, while the East Romans diverged in to their Orthodoxy. Also with the Holy Roman Empires central authority slowly breaking down, their long time Gothic rivals in an effort to spurn the Roman Pope sided with the East Romans in this religious conflict, becoming Orthodox themselves, continuing to box Rome in as much as possible.
And for the longest time Rome had to just accept all these affronts, as they could not hope to win against these nations to their north or south. Now of course if it were just the Goths alone, or just the imamate to their south alone perhaps they could. But the HRE Emperor would have intervened in the north and their southern neighbors always had powerful backer.
But lately this has changed, the Holy Roman Empire has fallen far from what it once was, now other nations tear pieces from it, even internal wars and internal conquests happen, clearly it is weak and opportunities perhaps present themselves north that once did not exist. Their enemy in the south meanwhile finally lacks strong support and is vulnerable. All while Rome itself has fully rebuilt itself in the many centuries, becoming once more a strong power in the world capable of fending for itself.
Though of course one other matter also presents itself, having long been the junior of the East Roman Empire, fortunes seem to have greatly reversed n the East. Truthfully reversed far to much, though over their differences and Rome's historically difficult position not much could be done till recently over the Ottoman threat. But perhaps it is time to make the East subservient to Rome once more, as it should always have been. They may resist a bit in their pride, but it would not be so hard now, many of their former island holdings have already been taken as it is.
All they'd need is to cripple their southern neighbor and recover the many Roman citizens groaning under their misdeeds and they'd be able to fully focus their armies and more on the Ottomans and remake Rome once more, as it should always have been, under them.
I think something like that would make some sense of the current historical configuration. Though perhaps others prefer their own ideas, or have far better ones yet.

Bit late to the party but I'd imagine something like the gothic kingdom who already had a lot of the senate, minted roman currency and tried friendly relations to Constsntinople would if we're making a Roman sucessor state transition into a second Roman Republic with gothic and Roman culture mixing a bit. Maybe delegating more power to the senate and having the Kings being dictators for life like Ceasar as to keep favour with the Byzantines since they wouldn't like a king in Rome.
Maybe the East had more fierce wars with Khosrow so Italy was better trading partners instead of the target of Belisarius or the plague of Justinian being worse keeping the state too weak to not afford armies taking Italy.
By the end of the Empire, Rome was already like a dozen barbarian kingdoms client states making overtures to Revenna. The goths continuing this and embracing Rome instead of a Gothic kingdom might have had a decent chance of surviving for a while.
Though the Pope as he gained power and clashed with church and state power sharing could have usurped power in Rome as it did in our timeline. (The pontifacts podcast is very good)

Side note: The southern Italy portion and byzantine expansion can be easily explained. Justinian's attempts to reclaim the empire could have weakened the south of itally and allowed the muslim exspansion in the area. Rome cound have been spending much of its exsistance for a 1000 years just trying to survive. holding its northern borders, maybe against the goths that became orthidox to support its possible once allies with the byzantines but to also throw shade against the catholic romans. as for them joining the holy roman empire? erm.... maybe it was a decision from a catholic ruler that never converted his people and made a deal to keep them orthidox if they chose, to help strengthen the HRE but to ensure the safty of his people against a roman republic that had finally rebuilt and secured its borders.... I dunno sounds plausable. this was fun

When I was trying to get the "for odin" achievement some years ago I set myself a roleplay run, it went like this: To meet the conditions of just 5 starting provinces and for a pinch of historical backstory, those 5 provinces were the 2 in Greenland and the 3 of Newfoundland. And from there start expanding in North America in order to become strong enough before jumping back to europe. I tried various sets of ideas and units but having the 200 point cap couldn't find the best combination to resist the push of the colonisers in the early 1600s. Do you think with this start would be feasible to get the achievement? Would you like to try a run with this conditions?

You should be able to declare on colonial nations without calling in the overlord if you are a colonial nation yourself, which counts as "any nation whose capital is in the new world." Therefore, when the Spanish, Portugese, British, and French start colonizing, let them get 5 provinces to make a colony, then declare on the colony for free clay.

Paradox can you make Roman Empire more playable and not require 425 provinces to be formed as Ludi said? Like when you get to this point when you form it there is not much more challange to the game and I am sure everyone would LOOOOVE juicy lore and misions for Rome and not the basic mission tree it has right now. People love this game because its full of history and flavour but the biggest and greates empire of all have no content besides some naval doctrine and goverment reform... like yeeeez. It would be sooo much more fun if you could form some version of Rome much earlier and follow the mission tree to get back the lands, change cultures and also some imaginitve expansion to their history like you did with Teutons for example.

if you have time for it can you maybe do a run next with for example the crusader states? lets say the crusades did work out at the end and they kept the conquered lands. i dont know the borders but something like jerusalem up to antioch and cyprus. and as goal maybe something like for the start secure the northern borders of africa to prevent muslim priates from raiding christian coasts and later on with some religious modifyers and ideas conquering and converting all muslim nations or taking all of africa.
