Ukraine: What is Russia's Terminator vehicle?

  • Russia has deployed one of its most advanced armoured vehicles to Ukraine for the first time.
The Terminator is designed particularly for urban combat, comes with the protection of a main battle tank and is designed to destroy enemy bunkers and infantry positions.
Now, the Terminator 2 has been spotted in the Donbas, with its arrival seen as an attempt to bolster the Kremlin's forces for a final push to take Luhansk.

@@tomasknotek6107 Ukrainian offensive southeast of Harkiv was a gamechanger indeed. Without it, Putin would never order mobilization. He just couldn’t realize that this is basically maximum you can get from the number of troops you have on the ground. Ukraine had six rounds of mobilization and had around 800.000 people under arms. Yes, vast majority of them are of poor training and quality but they still outnumbered Russians 4:1 when every military rule says it has to be the opposite - attacker must have a numerical advantage in order to succeed. If Ukraine wants to win another victory it has to do it before December. Because in January Russia will stop fighting with both hands tied to her back and start using one.

Ukrainians will set up 10 cameras to get every angle and have a press conference just like to do for every minor victory. Meanwhile the terminator will probably shred 100 Ukrainians before they manage to take it out. Who knows how good that thing actually is but it certainly can aim that gun quicker and at higher angles then a MBT. Those 30 MM cannons are absolutely disastrous if the Terminator sees you since there really is no cover besides a couple feet of dirt that will protect so anyone that thinks hiding in buildings is a good plan is going to have a bad time.

Probably not that high, they'd need to carry HE's inside the hull to really get some lift in the turret, and I don't think they carry a whole lot of large charges inside. Sure, they have the AT missiles, but they're carried in their launchers, and then there's the ammo for the cannons (and the grenade launchers that they forgot to mention), but all that is rather small charges compared to what you'd expect to find in a tank, so even with sympathetic detonation you're not going to get a whole lot of pressure.

BMPT-72 Terminator 2's were designed after Russian armoured columns took massive fire from elevated and multi-directional positions in the Battle of Grozny. If they are used in accordance with their tactical doctrines, they should do a lot to render plenty of defensive positions useless.
If not used properly, they'll be very very very vulnerable.
Built in reactive armour, smart defenses and a heck of a lot of range makes them pretty resilient.

Its the street fighting afterwards that this is about. Tanks do not really excel in urban areas which probably many people know. They don't shoot at upward angles well especially at close range. If anyone is above a tank on a 5th floor or something, I don't think a tank can even engage . Just as an armor professional, it's not an incompetent design (so long as they can maintain it) and fits a role generally filled by IFV's. But IFV's almost always do double duty as an APC, to the detriment of it's arsenal. This hunts for things that hunt tanks, whether foot mobile, motorized, or light mech.
Most targets in an armored units area of engagement are not MBT's. It's fortified positions, technicals, and other IFV's trying to do the same job, which are more numerous on the field than MBT's. 25-35 mike mike's and coax MG's get far more of a workout on a wider array of targets than a tank's gun.

A tank support vehicle isn't the same thing as infantry support. Without foot infantry (or drone equivalent) to clear spaces of a possible ambush, tanks (and anything that acts as a tank) are at risk. Without tanks to back up infantry against fortified positions and opposition armor, the infantry's job is unnecessarily dangerous. If they don't send infantry in ahead of the tanks, all we're going o find out about the "Terminator" is how far the turret pops up when the ammo rack cooks off. If you want to see a future infantry substitute for recon, look up DARPA's OffSet Swarm AI.

There is no such wonderful weapon that could operate on the battlefield separately and alone, especially among self-propelled armored vehicles ever created. A negative example is, despite the initial great success, of the super-warship Bismarck.
Only joint actions with other branches of the Armed Forces give a chance to succeed in combat. As a last positive example, the SS troops, despite their ideological disrepute (mostly from the side of the victims), these German combat units showed a good example of almost simultaneous coordinated actions with reconnaissance and diving aircraft, infantry, artillery and armored vehicles (remembering the Tiger), thus achieving good results.
And finally, the most important thing is that a person and people in a team, having the necessary morality and properly motivated, can successfully do what they have to do. These so-called new versions of the weaponry are just propaganda and another way for some commercial and political interests to line their pockets with more money.

It takes multiple hits to destroy the tank itself, ukrianian unedited videos show a lone tank with no support tanking 4 hits before the crew left their vehicle, all in the early days of the war. now that russia has decided to use air power and more supporting vehicles there are significantly less losses. if you decided to get you head out of the mud and stop beliving everything on CNN maybe you would respect what i just said and try and understand what i just said, but thats highly unlikely

I'm German and I know the Gepard a little bit.
Basically, the idea to use the Gepard in urbarn warfare is absolutely nice. High rate of fire, stunning caliber, good protection, due to the Leopard chassis. But there is a huge problem. The amount of ammo which will be delivered. It's only about 60.000 rounds, something about that. For AA it's ok, because you fire in precise bursts. But for ground fighting, even in urban environment, the 60k is not enough! It's for 15 Gepard, so you only have 4.000 rounds for each tank.
And, that's the next problem, the 35mm caliber ammo is very rare. 😕

    • @pfefferle74
      @pfefferle74 2 роки тому

Urban warfare is not what the Gepard was built for. Its ground combat capabilities are more of a makeshift self-defense option that would quickly deplete its resources.
What it was build for is turning every aircraft attack against a battle tank group into certain Kamikaze. Even if it is running out of ammo quickly, it's still an effective deterrent by asking any approaching fighter bomber pilots: "Who wants to be the first to die for glorious Fatherland?"
High velocity 35 mm bullets don't give a damn about your radar and IR countermeasures and good luck escaping its tracking computer once it has locked onto you.

Russia hasn't lacked firepower in this war, it's lacked the skill and experience to use what it already has. And the morale and discipline to function as a coherent force on the battle field. These "Terminators" are going to make very little difference if Russians still are unable to work as combined arms teams against Ukrainians who can. And even then Russia lacks the dismounted infantry to support its armor.
One Ukrainian soldier with even an old RPG-7 could take one of these out from the right quadrant. And Ukraine has systems that are far more capable like Stugna-P and Javelin. Or Switchblades and even highly accurate artillery.
Russia is still treating this war as mainly a psychological warfare conflict where all it has to do is scare Ukrainians enough they surrender. That has been highly ineffective from the start.

@Ricardo Alcaraz Ukraine rotated over 400,000 troops through the battle zone in the Donbass over the last eight years and has spent extensive time training their personnel, much of it with western trainers.
They have obviously mastered the skills they need to be effective against Russian forces.
Russia has reduced conscription from two years to one and has reduced funding for training across the board. Plus serious issues with poorly maintained and often missing equipment especially secure comms.
Sure some Russians lack the will to fight in Ukraine, but even those who have it lack the training, experience and often equipment to do so effectively. They are making the same mistakes they did in the first days of the war while Ukrainian units have gained a great deal of experience.
