  • Explaining the process that yielded their unique design for the new building of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA delve into how the final structure adheres to the surrounding terrain and site constraints on the edge of Sydney Harbour in Gadigal Country. In a region with steeply inclined topography, the building's terraced forms flow down into an overpass, dubbed as ‘land bridge’, which connects it with the nearby Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. SANAA’s dynamic design integrates multiple disparate elements encountered along the site, which collectively narrate the history of the region and its role in Sydney’s modernisation.
