Been using an inflatable Sea to Summit pillow for years. If you don't sleep well at night, you pay for it the next day. Tip: if your pillow tends to slide around on you at night, just stretch a spare t-shirt over it and the top of your sleeping pad to hold it in place. Works like a charm and helps keep your pillow clean.
It took me a long time to find a pillow that worked for me. After many pillows purchased, i finally settled on the Therm-A-Rest compressible . Weighs a bit more . Does not pack up as small but the difference for me is night and day. It is crazy. Pillows are one of those things you really have to trial and error it. Buy cheap ones, Expensive ones. Knock offs. I think i have more freaking camping pillows laying around my closet then anything. This is one of those scenarios where "buy the best and only cry once" does not really apply. You have to buy plenty and wake up with a sore neck and ear until you find one that fits your head. ;D Anyways thanks for the Video Luke. Glad you found a pillow you enjoy.
I personally prefer the Trekology Aluft Deluxe pillow, equally as compact and comfortable but cheaper and the strap that holds it in place is a nice touch. If you prefer a softer/down pillow then the Sierra Designs Dri-down pillow is nice and again, significantly cheaper. My two cents :)
The perfect hammock pillow...I love it. Down provides enough insulation that you don't need a full length underquilt to go above shoulder level and the down also provides enough sound insulation that unlike the more plastic like pillows, it doesn't act as a stethoscope and magnify the sound of every bug in the area. Also, you can get it on sale sometimes...or use that 20% off coupon that a leading outdoor retailer hands out a couple of times a year. Oh, and deflate it some to let it mold to the hammock shape...easy to do with that valve.
When you said "mold" I started wondering... Perhaps we need hand air pumps for these things, because using your breath to inflate it creates unnecessary condensation which might make your night more uncomfortable? Also, the mold...
I've been happy with my pillow from GOOSEFEET GEAR. These are customizable down with a zippered compartment. You choose how much down you want. You can add an inflatable pillow or something else inside the zippered compartment. Its nice to support a small cottage company.
I love the Goosefeet Gear pillow! I bought the one which perfectly fits the Aeros down pillow inside it (there is a handy table on the GG site to guide you to the size needed). Now it’s a great pillow with good height and smooth on the face. The two together are about 6oz. I stuff both into the same compression bag my sleeping bag is in so I save the 0.2 oz of the pillow stuff sack.
Hi Luke. Thanks for doing the pillow review. I agree the 4.7 inches is a bit shy for me as well. It would be nice if they had the same pillow in 6 inch thickness. And adjust from there with that handy valve. It might be adequate for my hammock, but I don't need a camping pillow collection.😎 I do like the idea of down. Cheers from 🇨🇦
I’ve been using the ENO camping pillow for years. It compresses down to the size of a grapefruit, has an interior pocket to stash stuff, if you want bulk you can stick extra fabric inside and still feels extremely comfy. On hot weather trips I like to stick cold packs in the pocket and that helps cool me off, same goes for cold trips the hunters hand warmers work great in the pocket.
I would only consider this based on your review. Normally I wouldn’t even bother with an inflatable pillow, especially at this price point. I would just use my other clothing or towels if they’re dry.. I would probably even be tempted to purchase a cheap pillow and squish it down for travel. I’ve been quite pleased with the “my pillow” at home and recommend it based on that, but it would be a challenge to take it backpacking.
My pillow makes a travel version now that has a built-in pocket, so you can compress it, and it packs into itself, obviously not ultra light but a great little pillow
I like it. I have two that I bought at Cabelas around 2014. Color green, and I believe grey at the valve area. Still use, an at the time when I was active duty army. They were very handy. Paid maybe around 30 to 40 dollars! I would recommend as well.
To my surprise, my Outdoor Vitals pillow blew me away. I think it's fantastic, I put it thru hell and so far no issues. Btw, I now use it at Home everyday as my regular sleeping pillow. Oh n it's not nearly close to $60. I understand that many people want to have that special comfort item out on the trail but I'll take my awesome Outdoor Vitals pillow and have many dollars left over for several other essential or comfort items. Going calmpin/bushcrafting etc shouldn't only be for those w a lot of disposable money. Since camping became 'bushcrafting' (trendy), the prices on gear have become ridiculous. SeaToSummit does have great gear but even if I had an extra $60 I wouldn't spend it on a blow up pillow. Stay safe Luke, Be Blessed in all good things.
@@jmash41 I put it in a tee shirt. No sliding, no noise but you must use what's best for you. Luke said the $60 pillow was too thin. Its all just preference. Btw, I'm a side sleeper too. ✌
Looks really nice! I enjoy your reviews. I also need a thicker pillow & after trying many different ones, I settled on one made by Paria. It has a down layer similar to the Sea to Summit but it is not inflatable. Instead, it has a pocket on the underside. I tuck an inflatable pillow into the pocket & blow it up. The combined thickness is more than any other pillow I've tried & the down top is very comfortable. It's more budget friendly too.
Ease up on the shoulder days and maybe you find pillow high enough for you ;) I think there should be loops to wrap the pillow around the mattress. That would help a lot. I want loops on everything now to attach things that should not be attached to anything. I have a pet who likes jumping on pillows, and then slides and falls from things ;)
My favorite pillow is the one I got for free from Outdoor Vitals, LOL! Seriously, it seems good quality and it’s a heck of a lot more comfortable than a pile of clothes. P.S. Those baffles are horizontal, not vertical.
Luke your reviews are like the absolute best. Like asking Jesus his opinion. You get all truth and no bs. When you say something about a product you k ow it's the absolute truth be agenda on dishonesty at all. Love your videos . thank you for standing your ground on keeping the Absolute Truth on a product .UA-cam needs more reviewers like you .
I'm currently pillow shopping, was leaning toward the Fillo pillow by Nemo, but may have to give this one a look. As for the noisy fabric, put your buff around it, most of us carry one of those anyway.
I have the Nemo fillo and Nemo fillo elite luxury. U can’t go wrong with either one the fillo has more padding in it over the elite tho but is abit bigger compressed in the sack
Another pillow recommendation is the travel pillow from MyPillow. Weighs 10oz's and compacts to the size of a Nalgene bottle. So not the lightest or most compact but it's an actual pillow that works well for weekend trips.
Hey Luke. So in the video when you showed you and your evil twin 🤣🤣 my wife and I were trying to guess which one you were. And we both thought you were the one on the left? Are we correct? The video was Backpacking in a Blizzard. Hey we absolutely love the channel and what you do!! Thanks a lot for the content and we will keep watching!!!!
UPDATE: I bought this pillow in mid-January this year, and took it on a week long trip to test it out. After dialing the psi to my comfort, I have used it every night. Now when I hit the JMT, I get to use the same pillow as I do at home! Love it!
I've been using the Decahtlon Forclaz MT500 pillow that is 15€. So far it has bee very comfy, and packs as small as the one in your video.. Quality is usual Decathlon.. Not high end but very well thought out..
I like this one too. The thermarest compressible is my favourite but this one is my preferred ultralight. It's nearly as comfortable, so light in the lack and the down provides some insulation.
Those are definitely nice, but then there is the size factor. I wish we could have a merger of the 2 for a more in the middle in regards to package size, the weight i can deal with, it's just the Nemo and the Therm a rest pillows take up quite a lot of space.
I recently picked up aeros premium and sorry didn't sooner after years of struggling being a side sleeper often reverting to my bergen and a jumper. Big plus for me is the reverse is S2S pillowlock compatible too on all the newer ones so it sticks to my pad (ether xt insulated). Basically stick on micro hook pads on sea to summit sleep pads and loop compatible backing that feels like flock on the pillow so it wont slide around at all. Older models don't have it but you can get covers that will. No reason you can't add super small hook&loop / velcro etc patches to other brands of pad.
Maybe im missing out, but i have been using a Sleeping bag cover As a Pillow, stuff it with fluffy content and a nice material on top of it, for comfort!
I have tried multiple different pillows including ones from Klymit, ThermaRest, Trekology and so on. Still haven't found the perfect pillow for me but have landed on the Hikenture pillow. Its inexpensive, lightweight, small packed up, and is about the right size inflated. It has a pad strap (like the Trekology one) and a removeable cover.
Love your channel and reviews etc. one thing I hear a lot of reviewers say about top end brands is "you might be able to find a cheaper Chinese version". Well I'd love to see the label on 90% of that stuff, probably all made in China as well. I've been to some outdoor equipment factories in China and they will make you cheap crap if that's what you want but they also make some of the world's best known high end outdoor brands.
This looks so much like thee Decathlon Forclaz MT500 Pillow. The same valve (at a different spot), similar materials and also a little cushion on top (no down) and the same size. It costs 15€ here in Germany, I have it for two years now and it's amazing.
I have shopped many pillows and found none that were satisfactory. Too small, too slippery wrong shape. I settled for a travel pillow from Walmart. It works in both my mummy bag in the winter and my regular summer bag. I don't camp that much and here in Texas I only truck camp at my age. This one I would buy! It's a bit pricy for me but it would be worth it! Thanks for reviewing this item!
I wasn't very comfortable with the S2S Aeros Ultralight. I loved the 53g weight, but it slips around and being a balloon it's very firm. A stuff sack with clothes is best, but why do you have spare clothes at night for the pillow? i'd be lucky if my down jacket is available to scrunch up. If you have spare clothes you're already carrying too much gear for UL hiking. So now i'm on the hunt for something with a bit of filling, something in between a ballon pillow and bulky camp pillow like the thermarest cinch...
Always when you are saying "I'm very impressed with this" I know that most probably I'm going to loose my money. With loose I mean I'm going to well spend my money :) Thanks for your reviews. You are awesome :)
Wow reading the comment there seem to be a lot of pillows out there. I used to just take a normal pillowcase and stuff a fleece in it. But that's either too thick of thin. I got a exped airpillow with a soft exped pillowcase. Same size and packsize as in the video and you can throw the pllowcase in the washing machine. That's a nice feature. I payed 40 euro's for the set and like it a lot.
I have this pillow and it blows my mind how comfortable it is for how little space and weight it is. I have the large version and even that is only 95 gram. Sure it is pricey, but it's hard to put a price on a good nights sleep and reliability. Ive had quite a few cheaper inflatable pillow and they always fail in some manner. Either issues with mold inside because of moisture, or they leak air or start breaking apart in the seems... and if you are out on a long hike or bike tour with no shops in sight, that means you are gonna be miserable for the rest of that trip, unless you can sleep without a pillow.
I use a "my pillow" roll and go. I need something softer than those air pillows. If I have too much space under my neck, I just roll up some spare clean clothing in a small stuff sack and put it under my neck for support.
Pillow manufacturers don't make products for people like me. I have suffered from acid reflux for years and what I need most of all is pillow height, preferably 6 inches, or a bit more. So my solution is two rectangular pillows, one on top of each other, securely held together by my buff. I have a Sea to Summit pillow, but the valve for my purposes, is completely in the wrong place, it's in the middle, for my setup to work the valves need to be at the end of the pillows.
My Etherlite XT sleeping pad has that same valve, and its really nice to dial in the right amount of firmness with it. I have accidentally pulled the deflate tab out and found myself on the ground really quick though, but that wouldn't be a huge deal with a pillow.
I got size large of this pillow. For starters it’s almost the same size as the regular when inflated. I believe the info on this size pillow on sea to summit website is misleading. All my sleeping gear is of Sea to Summit. The softer side of this pillow locks in with Sea to Summit sleeping mat so it won’t move. For the down noisy side, I usually carry a towel that I place on it to keep it quiet and also clean from my facial oils etc.
Sea to summit pads come with optional "pillow lock" stickers that are designed to grab the material on sea to summit pillows. Haven't tried it yet since they don't seem to stick to my non-s2s pillows but do seem to stick to some other fabrics I have around.
I have a sea to summit pillow like this but I am not sure which model as I sit here. It was pricey but its very strong as I did sit on it in my tent and had a panic moment but it stayed inflated. Its good stuff.
Great review, Luke! I love Sea to Summit products but actually opted for a real pillow with the Teton Sports Camp Pillow. I had 2 different Cocoon inflatable pillows but I found myself waking up and my ears hurting from the pressure. So I decided that I would get better quality sleep with a real camp pillow. It weighs 9.2 oz and is 11"x16"x4.5". Since I'm a side sleeper, I cannot sleep very long on ANY inflated pillow without getting a pressure point pain on my ear. I am going UL but will still take a real pillow for comfort. It's worth it to me. Luke, you like Teton Sports! Check them out for their camp pillow like I did. No regrets! 😁
I have been looking for a permanent pillow solution, as the inflatables I buy literally every time leak after a few uses. I think I’m gonna bite the bullet and buy this.
I have a sea to summit air mattress. I wonder if the carry sack for it that doubles as an air pump could blow this pillow up? Reason asking is I've read that blowing things up by mouth will eventually cause a buildup of undesirable microbes.
It does, you turn the sack inside out and there is the smaller diameter valve for pillows. I wouldn't worry too much about microbes though, perhaps the only downside is the moisture in your breath that could potentially freeze on the inside in low Sub-Zero temps.
They should add a small baffle that could be inflated separately for you to give more lift but I see an improvement in the extra baffle made it angle which I see giving back and side sleepers a bit more comfort. To me, that little add on can't cost more than a few cents to production and in turn, could leave the price where it is. Although no company would ever put a few more cents into a product and not raise the retail cost by $10 or more, which is kind of greedy in my eyes but I don't own a company that lives for the year end profit counts.
I got a Trekology 2.0 and love it and it's valve. But I'm going to start taking two pillows because I like to sit up and read at night. This pillow or the Fillo Piloow from Nemo.
That sound just like the pillow for me. I've always been disappointed in comping pillows for being too thin to support my head comfortably. At near 5" this may be the ticket. How has it held up with use?
The COMMENTS show just how personal pillow choice is! It is worth the money to get 'The One' that works for you. Poor sleep quality affects the entire camp/backpacking experience.
G'day Luke, no doubt in my mind a bag full of clothes doesn't cut the mustard and man I've tried different clothes and different bags, lol. Dont mind pay'n a bit extra for quality; gotta say though, this one would be around, or over, 100 AUD after currency conversion and shipping......... F* - it, I'll carry a real pillow from home in a plastic bag before I'll pay that much, or alternatively drag in an appropriately dimensioned log, lol. Cheers Duke.
I would never buy it just because of the cash grab proprietary system to attach it to sea to summit sleepings pads. Include a strap. Or loops to attach some shock cord. I also applaud and recommend the trekology pillow for this very very simple addition that increases the value tenfold.
For $60 I can get the Thermarest compressible pillow. It’s a real pillow and it compresses down to a manageable size. I’ll never go back to inflatable pillows.
hi, interesting video. i've seen also the Paria Down Pillow, did you try it? sadly i haven't yet found a decent pillow for me, i have serious neck troubles, and or they are too soft or worse, too hard. what do you suggest to a person with serious issues? full down with inner pocket or half down half inflatable? thanks
Yes, my Sea to Summit pillow is uncomfortable, and I keep getting small punctures. Every time I repair one, another one comes along.
Knock offs. You have to buy plenty and wake up with a sore neck and ear until you find one that fits your head. ;D
Anyways thanks for the Video Luke. Glad you found a pillow you enjoy.
just love the ending theme... keep listening to it on loop.
Thanks for all the Reviews Luke! Been watching your videos for some time now! Got me into hiking and camping again!
Yeah, the trekology sold it for me with the strap. I own 3 of them.
I own two of the Trekology pillows as well.
That Trekology pillow is quite nice.
Thanks I'm looking for a pillow with a strap.
I have to agree Mal3....👍
The perfect hammock pillow...I love it. So Youse cxnts are based in Perth, but get everything done in Chinese territory?
You can also place the pillow inside a pillow case..... Great presentation. Thanks, Luke.
A Buff (full size) works great for this
My go-to pillow as well. Thanks for the review.

I’d love to see you do some Crua tent and camp product reviews
Add a pad strap and this is a home run!!
I bought one many years ago with the pad I still have them
I still use my insulated jacket in a stuff sack. lol.
Have you tested the different Nemo fillo pillows?
Sea to summit pads come with optional "pillow lock" stickers that are designed to grab the material on sea to summit pillows. Haven't tried it yet since they don't seem to stick to my non-s2s pillows but do seem to stick to some other fabrics I have around.
I have a sea to summit pillow like this but I am not sure which model as I sit here. It was pricey but its very strong as I did sit on it in my tent and had a panic moment but it stayed inflated. Its good stuff.
Luke, what brand is that hat you are wearing? Does anyone know? Ive got to get one.
No regrets! 😁
I have the same problem and it is an excellent pillow
I have been looking for a permanent pillow solution, as the inflatables I buy literally every time leak after a few uses. I think I’m gonna bite the bullet and buy this.
looks pretty good
A great pillow. Large size is a better choice, 4oz 114g.
I use this pillow myself...you did not talk about the lock system, if you have a sea to summit sleeping pad, you can lock them together
I wouldn't worry too much about microbes though, perhaps the only downside is the moisture in your breath that could potentially freeze on the inside in low Sub-Zero temps.
thermarest compressible pillow - I’d love to hear tour thoughts about that product.
I like the the MK 1 MOD 1 BUORD DR982515 A It's an old skool flotation bladder. But it works as a great pillow.
I like my Trekology Deluxe. Best value for $12
thanks as always
ok 60 dollars wow I will continue to pack my real pillow at 30 dollars its awesome and I will manage the bulk and not that heavy thanks for sharing
I got this pillow this winter to use this summer. I tried it out to see if I liked it, and it hasn't left my bed.
Expensive and I'd like thicker but great review.
I use a Nemo Fillo and it seems to do the trick nicely...I couldn't have my head that high and stressing my neck
Recently got flextail gear pillow similar to this.
The COMMENTS show just how personal pillow choice is! It is worth the money to get 'The One' that works for you. Poor sleep quality affects the entire camp/backpacking experience.
I LOVED this pillow until it slipped out my hammock and my dog got ahold of it!
The noisiness would probably disturb me. I would prefer to put a puffy down cover on it to cut down on noise and increase comfort.
I'm not a big fan of the down feel so probably would use the other side. But it might have been better for me if they put the valve on an end panel
Ostrich pillow is best hahahor however you spell that
Good video thanks
Seems to me, the only feature it’s lacking is the air mattress strap. A little pricey for me. I’ve been using trekology.
60 too much, you are looking like a Special Forces sargent I used to know, great video....
Love the weight but made me sweat pretty bad with the material it is made
Out of.
Like others said, Trekology is very similar and a lot cheaper plus the air pad strap. Mine has worked well.
I'm allergic to down.. Is there a comparable synthetic material?
That price is crazy is crazy 😜
Not crazy about inflatable pillows. I tend to prefer the compressible models but Sea to Summit and Nemo both make good inflatable options.
hi, interesting video. i've seen also the Paria Down Pillow, did you try it? sadly i haven't yet found a decent pillow for me, i have serious neck troubles, and or they are too soft or worse, too hard.
what do you suggest to a person with serious issues? full down with inner pocket or half down half inflatable?
thanks
Could You tell me what backpacks you recommend
