Thanks. I thought you might find it interesting. I know a lot of people want to try freehand sharpening but don't want to spend much money before they know if they like it. I was really surprised at how hard that stone is. I have noticed that lapping it with a fine diamond plate it seems to leave a higher polish. With a cheap strop, a 240-400 grit coarse stone, and that little stone you can get some pretty decent edges for around $30. Maybe this will help a few people decide to give it a go. I got some dollar store kitchen knives and a few of the Ozark Trail Walmart knives to practice on. I wouldn't recommend beginning with your good knives. Thanks again.
I'd agree with all of that :) I was hoping that schrade stone would have arrived with it. When it does come, gonna use em together. I think they will compliment each other nicely.
Those little Ozark Trail knives can take a wicked edge. They don't keep em forever, but they can get really keen.
Now thats a bargain.I have that knife and it was one of the first chinese d2 I bought and it was great but the proof of your test confirms what I thought.just so others know alot of practice and experience go into your findings which over time ive really come to value.atb big ears love paddy 😂😂😂👍🍀
Thanks paddy :D I need to catch up on your vids.
Don't rush mate there still crap..lol😂😜
Wow I just practiced on my Spyderco ceramics after using KME diamonds up to 600, but used the same orange trusty Y-start Jin02 lmao and good ol Sanrenmu 9031 and Land 910+ also. Good to practice on since I use those by hand, but thinking of getting some Arkansas stones and translucent to add to my fixed angle system.
Arks are fun. They are just too slow for me these days. I rarely bother with em unless i wanna touch up an already sharpened blade
Did you end up getting any Arkansas stones for your fixed angle system?
Nice job but what about small pocket knife I try to sharp it unfortunately failed ☹️,i need help,,thanks

Do u think the dans stone is more or less than 1,000 grit?
Its close. Hard to put a grit on it but id say 800-1200 is a good guess
@@Jef would u say it’s about the same as a soft Arkansas?
@@xade7863 No. Arks are different beasts altogether. I have never seen one I would place in the 1k range, other than the scratch pattern. They are finer than that, in terms of speed. A soft Ark behaves more like a 5k stone, with 800-1k scratches. Just the nature of naturals. Not an apples to apples comparison. I would place this in line with the Norton India fine. That is as close a stone as you will find to it.
You should really try to use the metal support/ anchor. It will take the weight of knife/ your arm out of the equation. Couple of UA-camrs like birdshot IV and NJMS EDC are using it more predictably. Or maybe you should contact Manufacturer regarding the issues.
They have come up with new spool and anchor design it seems to help preserve the test media and to avoid edge damage respectively.
I've discussed and demonstrated this in other videos. Using the anchor creates a drawing motion, not a true push cut. The results when using the anchor, are skewed. Anyone using it is fooling them self, as well as, anyone watching. My shakiness, unfortunately, prob skewed the results too. Either way, I'd prefer a push cut test, vs slice/draw motion.
I have seen the new spool design, and anchor. The only thing different, in the anchor, as far as I can tell, is the well is wider. The new spool looks promising. One of my biggest issues in the beginning was trying to get the thread to the appropriate tension.
I know it's been awhile since you made this but $8? Dan's has them at $31 for a single grit 6x2. I mean dang.
They are sold out but yea. $8

Interesting it didn't come loaded with oil.
I use water on mine. Works well, and is easier to clean up for me.
Do you have a katayama 8000 grit if so can u do a review on it
Sorry but that is one stone I do not have.
I have that stone and it's a great polishing and finishing stone if you want to add extra edge on your blade, from time to time I sharpen my knives in my wet stones and I finish on that 8000 grit stone. I highly recommend you to keep it as a polishing and finishing stone, ifi had Xtra money I'll buy a higher grit but that 8000 will do just fine on any knife!!
@@Jef Jeff I'm surprised you don't have the kitayama 8000 polishing stone!! In your early videos from the very beginning I asked for your review about it but I guess you never responded or did.
what grit is that stone?
do you need to soak it in water before using?
There is no grit. It's basically a medium type Alum Oxide stone, or like the Norton India "fine". I think that was rated around 325 grit, give or take. No it doesn't require a soak, but it can absorb a small amount of water. I think most would use oil on this type. I like the 1part baby oil, 1 part dish soap, 4 part water concoction, personally. Easier to clean up, and load up isn't as bad, as when using just water.
13:50 i talk about grit rating
@@Jef that's a good grit to remove smalls dings and chips, I'll try that water mixed with dish soap and baby oil because I'm not a fan of oil because it's messy IMO. will purchase that stone soon
thanks for another of your very enjoyable videos
i don't comment much anywhere here on youtube but wanted to let you know of something similar to the konigsberg sharpening i just googled and saw a clip of in use
it reminded me a lot of the DMT Aligner i have and used rarely in the past with my stones in a very similar manner as shown here:
ua-cam.com/video/IUridlcjmZ4/v-deo.html
my 400/1200 ezelap diamond plate made short work on a damaged knife i had much trouble with freehand
i own the diamond kit but never fell in love with the tiny stones it came with years ago so i don't use it
your freehand work is stellar and i hope you don't tire of sharing here anytime soon
you've made me a better freehand sharpener but i've a ways to go to develope the natural feel you show here over and over again
thanks Jef
Thank you for the kind words. I don’t claim to be an expert. Far from it, but what I do know I am happy to share. The dmt aligner is very much like what konigsberg is making. I think I recall hearing the dmt felt a bit flimsy due to the plastic clamps. Otherwise it’s a fantastic system. Diamonds just never agreed with me, so I never purchased one.
Soon as this system arrives, I will of course, be sharing it in video. Appreciate you watching. Hope to hear more as your sharpening improves 👌
