  • This time I explain how the ring that started Sauron's downfall was the ring of the House of Durin, not the One Ring.

    Interesting too is that Durin’s folk believed their ring came directly from the elves, which would make it even more appropriate that it would help lead to the destruction of Sauron.

    Fun thing that could be coincidence or who-knows, but looking up things on Wiktionary for ‘Thrain’, it could be derived from Saxon ‘thraian’ which is to ‘twist, turn’. There’s quite a theme of twisting evil against itself rather than battling it directly, so might be a nice little bit of etymology to fit alongside and support the theory!

      Indeed - but it's not quite explicit in The Hobbot, where the ring is really only mentioned in passing. I certainly hadn't thought of it till now.
