Are you looking forward to The Hunt for Gollum film? What do you think they will use from this book story?
I only hope they don't change too much and respect the books. Though the hobbit did change things they did want 3 films thus had more room to add things such as lake town. I would hope they keep this respect and don't do any modern things if swapping characters and forcing a message.
Peter Jackson and Co. are fantastic, but 2 movies?! Maybe 1. So many more interesting subjects.
I absolutely hate this idea. It's not a story worth telling and would not fit in with the LOTR movies we have already. By the way, wondering if you are aware of all these AI-assisted channels popping up doing lore videos of all kinds? I keep seeing Tolkien related ones especially. They invariably suck; thanks for doing what you do for real!
I just don’t understand why they chose this story rather than the ones fans have been dreaming of seeing for years. I don’t think it’s definitely going to be bad but I’m not actively excited either.
Could you please give us the source(s) of the story. I have read Appendix B and a lot of HoME, but I have never heard or read some of the things you said.🙏
Remember in the first movie when Gandalf said after he returned to Frodo "II looked everywhere for the creature Gollum, but the enemy seems to have found him first" I had no idea there was a whole ass lore and story there enough to make a movie about it.
It's like the Lotr version of the Death Star plans
@@DarkCreed cool analogy lol
There isn't lol. It was like one paragraph in the book.
well, there isn't. just cash grab like the hobbit which is a kid's book and they make 3 effing long movies about it.
@wellington66440 Lord of the rings was also a cash grab, how dare they use the books to make money in movie form. God people like you are pathetic.
The extended cut of the movie is going to be 14 hours of Gollum just eating fish. And occasionally a baby. But mostly fish.
"Munchy crunchy, squishy fishies"
I have more faith in Serkis/Walsh/Jackson/Boyens
No birdses? No crunchable birdses?
@@TawadebTHIS
lol😂
Aragorn’s journey including the descendants of Beorn, Dol Guldur, and Thranduil sounds like a really cool way to bridge the Hobbit films and the LOTR trilogy even further. This could be a really cool addition to the movie canon, I think. 👀
and this could be like "Rogue One: A Star Wars story" 🙂🙂🙂
@@iamkonrad26Yeah, leading right into the films, could be pretty sick.
At that point the "hunt" for Gollum was already over though. Seems like the uncertainty of catching him will have to be the main source of suspense, no?
This should have been the third movie that should have bridged Hobbit and LOTR. And the Hobbit should have remained two movies with events from just the hobbit.
@@ethsch13 Gollum's escape is why Thranduil sent Legolas to Rivendell, and why Legolas was present at Elrond's council: to bring the news that Gollum had escaped.
I cant tell you enough how much i appriciate your explanation way of using the map and events/travels on it using character icons, makes it so understandable and fun
Remember the whining from Gollum in Emyn Muil with Frodo and Sam for 10 minutes about getting dragged along? Now imagine that for 50 days over 900 miles.... the horror!
There is a fan-made movie (from 2009) named The Hunt for Gollum if anyone is interested. Anyway, thank you for the video again.
Woah I didn’t know Gollum ate human babies at one point. That makes him an even more demented character than I first thought! 😨
Yep I learned this long ago and shows how corrupt and wicked he truly is even to the most innocent of life.
It was in the book being recounted by gandalf to frodo it was super haunting. Forgot the exact wording but he said something like he broke I to windows to find cradles.
Think of all the other options he had for food, including the local fish market. Killing and eating babies was pure evil.
@@barryhill2836 that's actually correct the wording. He would hunt birds in nests and find cradles whilst in the woods and close to homes.
@@Enerdhil showing how a once hobbit became no more or less than a evil feral beast that spoke. Nothing is safe from its starvation when it demands a meal.
At first I was underwhelmed but the ideas of seeing Sauron question gollum, Younger Aragorn meeting Gandalf, Aragorn sneaking around the borders of Mordor, Aragorn finding the location of Isildors death and then meeting Thraduil. Seeing the woodland realm fight on their home turf…. So many cool possibilities
Yeah lets hope theres no studio interference like what they did with the hobbit
Was happy at the news of this film, but a 15-minute video with terrific art work, narration and maps has covered the subject very well. Still, when the film is released, I'll be there. 🤞
Especially the Maps.👍😁
That’s what I was thinking.. not a lot of material. Hopefully it won’t be like the Hobbit films with a lot of filler
You could summarize the Lord of the Rings in minutes too, doesn't mean the movies aren't worth watching.
@@Enerdhil I would love to find more information about that detailed map that's in color. I wonder if it exists, or if it's just a graphic used for videos.
@@mordorobsidian
There are some map makers that will make maps of Middle Earth, Numenor, or Aman and sell them.
I got The Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Then I made copies of various pages and stuck them in my books. Without those cut up maps, I don't think I could have read as much of Tolkien's writings as I have.
I think that to have an aesthetically pleasing map would be nice, but I prefer practical maps that help me visualize where everyone is in the story.
I appreciate this channel so much in that you do character markers on maps and then move them around as they move around middle earth doing whatever they are doing. As a person with TERRIBLE directional sense, it is such a great addition to the content to keep me engaged and feel a part of the community.
DITTO! Although I have fairly good navigational skills, I very much enjoy maps. I think your use of them in telling your tales is fantastic!
This is such a wonderful story in so many ways. It makes someone who appreciates Tolkien's genius all the more thankful.
Tolkien would be proud to know you convey his stories with such ease. The way you tell it with all the numerous fantastic visuals is amazing. I'm glad to have found this channel!
I don't see anyone doing a better job than Cate as Galadriel. That backhand she gave to Gandalf's jailor still hurts to this day, and even Sauron sounded like a woos when she showed him the light!
😂
I don't think that was what Tolkien had in mind when he said Galadriel cast down Dol Guldor.
Cate with her deep voice and timeless beauty was a perfect Galadriel.
Alao Lee Pace as Thranduil
The most critical point in this story is that Gollum retreats southwards, towards Mordor. Sauron's revelation at Dol Guldur causes the One Ring to awaken and desire to return to its owner. This is why the One Ring abandoned Gollum. In this parallel, the change created by the One Ring in Gollum's soul causes him to be drawn to Sauron's will (just like the One Ring trying to return to its owner, Sauron), and therefore to turn to Mordor. This is a good example of the nature of the One Ring and the metaphysics of its effect on the souls of incarnate beings.
It's really fascinating to point out that Sauron, a physical 9 fingered being, existed in the lord of the rings. He wasn't just some fiery spirit in the form of an eye. It'd be terrifying to see him in this new production!
It was Jackson that made him into a giant eye so it’ll be interesting to see if they show Sauron. I bet they won’t
Peter Jackson should be great at producing this horror scene.
@@tevildo45
They have to show Sauron and they will and he won't be a flowing fiery eye either.
@@Enerdhilwhy would he make his own movies now not make sense by doing so?
Sauron was never an eye. that was jackson
I had no idea Aragorn "knew" Gollum THIS well before the movies.
Thanks for the info!
Take it you not read the books. Go explore them pal you won't be disappointed
@@brettdowns277 I don't no. I've seen the movies etc 100 times + followed this channel for like hundreds of videos but didn't know that part very well.
I'm not much of a book reader sadly but if I would start it would 100% be with Tolkiens work.
@@misterhoobomasterI'd recommend the audio books too if you cant do the physical copies it's an excellent read.😊
I got my friend into lord of the rings book by audio because he can't read give that blast
@@erickhart8046 Get the audiobook version where Andy Serkis reads it out loud. His voice acting is outstanding.
It's so easy to lose touch with the huge time frame in which all these events occur. In the film trilogy, of course, the only reference to events during the hunt for Gollum is his capture, torture, and release by Sauron. And nobody who's only seen the films can appreciate that 17 years pass between Bilbo's 111th birthday and Gandalf's apprising Frodo of the One Ring. I'm excited to see the true scope and complexity of this period fleshed out in the upcoming film.
Did not expect a video today, nonetheless it is much appreciated. Your dedication to getting these videos out for us are much appreciated

It was really cool to see a few of my paintings included in your video!! 😄 Thank you so much! 🙏
Absolutely looking forward to the movie with two top notch folks producing it and the possibility of Gandalf coming back what's not to love
I bet the next film would be something like "The War of the North" after the battle for Dale and Erabor in War of the Ring
Not gonna lie that movie would go so hard
I wish they would make a film on Erebor and Dale during the war. They could constantly reference the first trilogy without having to show any of the characters.
That would have been an impossible sell to the studios. No known characters except for some of the dwarves from Thorin's company whom audiences wouldn't remember. And I think they'd get hung up on no hobbits in the story.
I want a whole movie or book abt battles of Witch King so damn bad. But that would be good thought
I really hope that’s what the second movie is! We could have Thranduil, Dain Ironfoot, Galadriel and Celeborn in it
1:41 Thrilling that Gollum learned about the Shire in Dale and that that information was revealed to Sauron in Mordor.
This story is so good. I think there is definitely enough story here to put it to film. Cautiously excited to see how it turns out!
No
For those interested in Gollum the baby eater: the speaker is Gandalf, and he's speaking to Frodo in Bag End (Chapter II, The Shadow of the Past):
"The Woodmen said that there was some new terror abroad, a ghost that drank blood. It climbed trees to find nests, it crept into holes to find the young; it slipped through windows to find cradles."
Well thats not haunting at all.
This sounds exactly like Voldemort. 😂
@@heiker1351🤣🤣🤣
So, Aragorn knew so much of Gollum and seemingly he is the reason Gollum knows the way through Emyn Muil. Sounds like it might actually be an awesome film
Thanks, Debbie.
Also, this obscure chapter gives credence to Gandalf's remonstrance about keeping Gollum alive. Truly, the little creeper had a knack that bodes for a pertinent role later. For good or ill.
I still find it amazing that Gandalf did not have Elrond look at Bilbo's Ring when they stopped in Rivendell on their way back to the Shire from the Lonely Mountain
At that time Tolkien had not written LotR yet, so it was simply a magic ring of invisibility.
The production quality of these videos is just fantastic - thanks!
02:00 A friend of mine used this as the basic plot for a Tolkien roleplay campaign. Alas we lost Gollum at the Ford on the Anduin where he went East towards Mordor only to be captured and the party split up. The elf returned to Mirkwood and the Human went to the white city to save Denator who was a man in his late twenties or early thirties, more like Boromir than the wretch he would become using the Palanthir. Unfortunately that is where we stopped. My GM was not known for his endurance.
A movie focusing on Aragorn and some of his travels prior to lotr sounds pretty fabulous. Lots of potential here. Wonder who they're gonna find to play the part.
Viggo is still strong possibility.
if aragorn isn't played by viggo, i can't take that movie seriously. Thanks to modern software and good makeup artists, they can make him look young.
Timothee Chalamet 😂
Viggo won't do it. He doesn't really want anything to do with Aragorn as of late.
@@elishateegardinas of late?
Just today I read a new article (more a news tweet, I guess) about how the War of the Rohirim movie looks "too much like anime" and "too different from the old animated LotR movie". All I can say: those pictures look great! The characters look like they were designed/drawn for an adult audience, with enough facial expressions and enough details to make for a serious movie and not a child-friendly cartoon.
An excellent video! You do such good, solid research, and present these stories in a well-spoken and easy-to-understand manner. It's just amazing how much behind-the-scenes action is always happening with Tolkien's world, and how he kept it all straight in his head, I will never know!
Several years ago, not sure how many, there was a fan made film called the Hunt for Gollum. It was about 30 minutes long. Was not bad from what I remember.
Yes, someone on this board posted a link to the film and so I watched it.
It is extremely well-made. The budget was just a couple thousand dollars because everyone loved Tolkien and volunteered their expertise.
Of course it is not strictly accurate to the lore because of time compression, but they were able to keep the essence of Middle Earth and Tolkien's characters intact.
The dialogues were soooo much better than TRoP.
The fight scenes were fabulous. Every RoP fight scene sucked big time. Their fight-scene choreographers must have been trans male or female. There is no other explanation for their amateur-look.
Yea, WB sent a take down thing of it so they could make this movie
@@EnerdhilCringe.
I don’t think they’ll have the balls to do the baby thing. I think you’ll see Gollum over a crib, see Sméagol take over and be playing with the cute elf baby, and an adult elf will arrive and make the worst assumption.
No they probably will. It would their current satanic purposes. Have you seen the last Hellboy to be made, Hellboy 3? Ghastly stuff with cooked and eaten babies. They disgustingly show far too much, which seems to be their delight.
I cannot wait for the World to be righted-PLEASE GOD. 🙏🙏
That sounds like an excellent movie plot right there. I hope they find no need to change it much. Small things ofcourse, but no unnecessary ones! Like Gollym taking a trip to Hobbiton just so we can have few seconds of sleeping Frodo included for fan service.
Since Peter Jackson has the rights to The Lord of The Rings, could they begin the movie right when Bilbo disappears at his party then when Bilbo leaves for Rivendell and Frodo picks it up and Gandalf has him put the ring someplace safe. Then the journey starts when he says I need to do some looking into the ring of which the Fellowship takes about 5 minutes, this movie could be the rest of the story. Then the movie ends when Gandalf returns and frightens Frodo and he asks is it safe and then throws it into the fire, and catches Sam outside. It could be a story within a story. Kind of like the way Rogue One was for A New Hope.
Can we talk about the QUALITY in the storytelling of this video? Props to this yt channel 👏 so entertaining and interesting
I think it will give more depth and new interaction between aragorn and gollum because its a loong journey.
I remember reading this section as a child and thinking: „Man why did they never show this in the films!“ As an adult I will finally be satisfied
Sorry, but I put Tom Bombadil and Goldberry plus the Barrow Wights way ahead of Gollum's back story.
@@Enerdhil yeah sure but it would be kind of weird to make a movie out of it
@@Enerdhil And the Scouring of the Shire.
@@Carlo_ReNews
True
@@istari0
Definitely. The Scouring of the Shire would have made a perfect 4th movie all by itself. Too long to be included in the special edition DVD box set. 😞
Guys, hear me out. The Silmarillion as a TV show. Each episode is a chapter. Buuuut, the episodes are not in chronological order for story telling purposes
Now I understand the expression of gandalf in lotr, when he said to frodo "that's gollum", with that stonecold and fucked up face, as he was looking for him for years and now he's following them
I'm optimisitic about the adaption but I have a sense this was selected as the most marketable storyline, considering the amount of fan favourite characters that could potentially make a return. Not considering just Aragorn, Gandalf and Gollum himself - we could potentially again see Bilbo, Elrond, Thranduil, Beorn, Galadriel, Legolas etc. I have a feeling this could be a connective tissue between both trilogies. I just hope we receive a great story and not too much is shoe horned in to do something like that. For a single film, it's also a lot of area to cover geographically compared to what is covered over 3 films afterwards.
Cant wait, really hope we get to see Grimbeorn and the beornings make an appearance.
The hunt for Gollum was a few paragraphs in the novels now it's gonna be a movie...wild
I have no idea how they are going to make this into a movie, but I'm excited to find out.
Love these lore videos, keep it up!
There's already so much negativity circulating about this movie. I for one am happy to see this integral part,of the story of the one ring, making its way to the big screen!!
Wow. There's alot of story that can be told in the two part film. Looking forward to it.
Currently being in the process of finally reading all of Tolkien's work and having just finished The Fellowship of the Ring, I was rather disappointed when I found out that the future movie would be about this part that was merely given a short account of by Gandlaf during Elrond's Council. The amount of lore and details you managed to provide from this little account is getting me super hyped for the movie, I hadn't realized it provided so rich a lore. Thank you for another epic video.
I can’t wait for the movie. With the LoTR team running the project I think we’re in for a treat.
Happy Birthday to Sir Ian McKellen! My He Play Gandalf in this movie for one last time.

news about this has been the best news this year all round i think....additionally the fact that the old fan made version is now back on youtube equally is good news :)
I am shocked that you did not mention the fan-made 2009 film "The Hunt for Gollum".
Even so, fantastic video and a solid retelling of the Hunt.
What for? Lol
Actually I just watched the "Hunt for Gollum" video and saw the making-of video. I was very impressed. Of course, they had to compress the timeline to make the movie 30-something minutes, but I think they did a convincing job of it. You can tell everyone involved loved Tolkien and freely gave up their time and money to produce the film. I highly recommend every Tolkien aficionado watch it.

The Gollum torture seen may be difficult to watch. Can't wait for this film though, an overlooked part of the story.
I was waiting for this one! So thorough - learned a lot. I made a video breaking down these events myself, but I knew I must’ve missed some lesser known texts. So cool to hear Aragorn’s own account of the hunt!
I'm not well versed with the LOTR books, but this superb channel always gets me clued up in a very insightful and entertaining way. Really good work!
I’ll admit, there’s even more rich material the adaptation could use than I remembered! I can particularly imagine a very poignant opportunity for character exploration in the Gladden fields, with Aragorn and Gollum each considering its place in their deep pasts 🤔
Brilliant video as always! I loved the fanmade Hunt for Gollum movie. They mentioned the eating babies thing but didn't show it in their version. Somehow I fear that the official movie will show that and I don't know that I can bear it 😱 Gollum freaks me out so bad I don't know how well I can endure a movie with him in so much of it. But at the same time I have so much FOMO I'll definitely want to. 😭
A Gandalf + Aragorn TV episodic series taking place between 3001 and 3008 where they travel from town to town, solving problems and getting in fights with an overarching plot of hunting gollum would be cool.
Great video, thanks 🙏 I didn't know there were so many adventures about Gollum's search! I'm very much looking forward to seeing it 👌
Wow - I never really knew that whole story. Thanks for putting it together for us!
Aragorn plays a huge role. This is like his proper ranger/tracker adventure. I don't imagine Vigo is up for reprising Aragorn.
"Lurking Visitor" that is a truly horrifying image, one I have never had in reading the book
I wonder who they're gonna cast, because these actors who played these roles are so iconic...
Peter Jackson might have to produce a film that doesn't violate Warner Brothers' DEI policy, IF they have one. We could see another Tauriel come out of nowhere and play a major role.😞
@@EnerdhilI think it will be either a hit or a miss, with no in between. If WB is smart, they should respect Tolkien's work and avoid pushing any agendas in the film which will only work against the majority of the fanbase... which happened in The Hobbit to an extent. But ngl if you compare The Hobbit to nowadays thrash they're actually very good movies 🤣
CGI faces, like Star Wars did?
I agree, a hit or miss.

I hope not.🙏🤞
I really want to see Gollum refusing to come down from the tree.
Glad to see a channel covering and appreciating Tolkien's own writings specifically without jumping on the "Hollywood bad 😡" train. I'm still cautious about the quality of the film but as long as it doesn't get stretched out into 2 hrs of dumb fight scenes I have no issues. Heck I'll be happy to see Thranduil, Celeborn, young Denethor, more skin-changers, etc make reappearances. Besides we still have War of the Rohirrim to look forward to this year
You can't blame people for jumping on the hate train. I myself have little hope in this project and have already prepared myself for disappointment.

Gandalf did not believe that Bilbo had a lesser ring. It's an easy explanation for why Gandalf waited so long which is why it keeps spreading (I posted a similar comment to this one on the "When did Gandalf know Bilbo had The One Ring?" video from January 2023), but it plainly contradicts Book I Chapter 2.
"‘When did I first begin to guess?’ he mused, searching back
in memory. ‘Let me see - it was in the year that the White
Council drove the Dark Power from Mirkwood, just before
the Battle of Five Armies, that Bilbo found his ring. A shadow
fell on my heart then, though I did not know yet what I
feared. I wondered often how Gollum came by a Great Ring,
as plainly it was - that at least was clear from the first. Then
I heard Bilbo’s strange story of how he had ‘‘won’’ it, and I
could not believe it."
Gandalf knows it's one of the Great Rings *before* he even heard Bilbo's lie about how he acquired it. The actual explanation for Gandalf not believing it's the One Ring until Bilbo's birthday party is probably a mix of Gandalf being busy with other things, a lack of certain knowledge about the Rings of Power (Gandalf had to track down sources and couldn't trust them to be correct or complete), and Saruman using his voice and authority to convince Gandalf that the One Ring had been washed out into the sea.
I was not much looking forward to The Hunt for Gollum film, but this video has given me some hope that it will not suck.
With Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis being the primary drivers, it will at least be well-performed and visually stunning. Those two really set the standard, really re-invented (or invented) performance capture CGI methods. And PJ in particular has been a real stickler about adhering to the source material, as far as you can be for movie adaptations. So, cautiously, I will wait for the movie with anticipation.
The CGI/A.I. worries me.😔
this is gonna be such a good movie
I love your content and its great to hear this story in its full state. I'm worried this is also going to wind up as a standard to measure how far off the movie winds up being from the actual story lol, hopefully Jackson can keep things reigned in better than the hobbit movies.
Blockbuster summer movie about the cannibalistic baby snatcher that even orcs and goblins fear.
It's a bold move.
Nerd of the Rings, Subscribed because your videos are so much fun!
They should let you help with the making of future projects your devotion to the source material is exactly what is needed in my opinion
Will be interesting if they have an explanation beyond whats in book 4 for how Gollum got to know Shelob. Fair assumption she isn’t just a base hunter instinct but how would they communicate? Why wouldnt she kill something like Gollum for a snack?
Thanks for the background to where this film may go.
Thanks for elaborating on this! It was a bit hard to follow the interlacing timelines described at the council of Elrond.
additionally it is said that Aragon and gandalf had adventures together, perhaps one of these could be used a filler in a film , of which this tale was told?
Can't wait to see the new film!! Keep up the good work my dude!
In the future, he'll be sitting at the black gate, watching everything crumble to ruins after the destruction of the ring, and he'll think "I'd still rather do this again than travel with Gollum.".
Crazy Sauron let him go and ultimately sealed his own fate.
Love your videos! Would you do a video for the full travels of Gollum ?
Looks like Aragorn and Gandalf started the fellowship long before the fellowship was actually formed!
Two epic legends!
Looking forward to another film from a wonderful team !!
I remember watching the fan film of the same title; Really did look similar to the Jackson Films, actors and all, but also bearing otherwise strong relations to the books, and focusing solely on Aragorn. A Real Recommended watch!
This was very informative, thanks! I'm not too optimistic about what they'll do with a movie telling of this, but I'm glad to know the canon. It's been way too long since I read the books 😅
Informative and covering the whole story from the book.
Why not a story from the first age? The battle between the elves and Morgoth, the fall of Gondolin, the last battle against morgoth that lasted 40 years, that would be spectacular to watch. Elves + dragons+ the flying ship+ the Morgoth + the other gods... This channel's influence is undeniable at this point.
Because no one has the film rights to The Silmarillion.
Think this would be cool if this movie somehow bridged and connected to a trilogy about the War in the North during the War of the Ring
They absolutely have to bring back Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen and Lee Pace to their roles! We could definitely get some cameos from Beorn, Galadriel, Celeborn and Legolas. Very exciting
They definitely won't. At least one of them is going to be a POC, and they are going to turn one of them into a woman. Oh, and one of them is going to be an LGBT+ member.
Those guys are too old.
@valentinkambushev4968
Let's wait and see if Warner Brothers has a strict DEI policy that they will force Peter Jackson to comply with.
@@Enerdhil Not too sure about that. Viggo is in fantastic shape and Gandalf is old anyway.
@@Tyler_Pifer92
We will see. Viggo looks old to me. He's 65 years old now. Ian is 85 years old. I think his face is fine for Gandalf, but can he handle the work load?
Kinda wish they did one of the other books, but I hope it’s good
Very interesting video, I didn't know about this part of the story. Haven't read the books except the Hobbit (although I have all of them, the Silmarillion, the Histories, all of it). This sheds alot of light on how Gollum ends up in Mordor.
I have hope because he is getting the reins from the start not being brought in halfway. The Hobbit was fun but it didn't do justice to the book.
The Lord of the rings trilogy is fantastic, and it barely scratches the surface of how good the books are,if he treats the hunt for golem with the respect he did with the LOTR trilogy then we should be good.
That is a big "IF."
I have confidence in Jackson and Co. The real question for me is how the studio behaves. We'll probably get an idea of their take with "War of the Rohirrim" in December.
I have always wanted a scene of Gandalf interacting with Gollum 😩
My Precious
Looking forward to seeing what Andy Serkis will do with this. He hasn’t let us down yet have great faith in this
He will probably be the only good thing about this movie.
@@valentinkambushev4968 toughen up bud have faith
Great Video as always Sir!
