- Hey friends! Today we're diving into "My Friends" from *Sweeney Todd*! This iconic song showcases Sweeney's complex relationship with his razors, blending eerie beauty with dark intensity.
From the haunting E flat minor chords to the lyrical melodies, every note and lyric holds deeper meaning. It's not just a song-it's a narrative in music. The use of rubies as a metaphor for blood and wealth adds layers of richness to the lyrics.
Join me as we explore the brilliance of Stephen Sondheim's composition and lyrics. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Glad to you see your channel! Hopefully I can really learn and improve as player playing music theatre music! I picked up a job as music director and I’m scared because I never worked in musical theatre environment!
I am not a music ian, but I love classical music and opera. I think the great advantage for Sondheim is that we knew Bernstein and he surely taught him a lot of the complexity of classical music specially the avant gard music in the early XX century. Forme sounds like Shostakovich with a beautiful music line. Thank you!
I really love your "breaking down the score" videos, they give me a much greater appreciation for the music!! Thanks so much!
Glad you like them!
This is the type of Musical Theatre I like, this whole show is fabulous. The music is so well written, not just the lyrics but the whole instrumental part. I really love this videos, please keep making them, you really understand the complexity of each song.
