Nice set up, very similar to ours, we use a solar panel, separate energizer and battery for our 100m poultry netting then a combined unit for our perimeter rope fencing. Extra charging is required during our winters. Main draw back with the poultry netting here is the weather, we just had a cyclone hit followed by over 2ft of snow but up to 3ft with the drifts, even with the secondary support sticks we use the whole lot was flattened!

That's really interesting Trev - I hadn't considered the effect of the amount of snow you get. Is there anything to be done?

@@EnglishCountryLife This year we put larger (wooden) secondary support sticks behind the normal poles attaching them with cord thinking as they went deeper into the ground they may hold the netting and spiked poles in place, works during wet weather but not with the weight of snow and the drifts. Thinking of trialing some stronger support sticks made out of rebar using a welded cross base with 4 long spikes on. We will also look at either planting up something for wind breaks or making some out of snow meshing/netting. Problem is keeping mobility as we move the netted area around to different places during the course of the year.

@@bgtrev Keep me informed? My mind went to T posts but they would short the fence.

@@EnglishCountryLife You can get T post adapters to hold electric wiring but not sure how they work with netting. I have contacted some companies to ask them. Will update you if I make any progress. Keep well.

In this freezing weather the chickens drinking water is of course freezing over. How do you manage this problem with your flock? Do you just brave the cold first thing every morning with fresh warm water or have you found a solution that keeps the water liquid at least for mild frosts?

I wish we gad a magic solution but yes, we clear thf trough of ice and add hot water to the reservoir. When it gets very cold we keep spare drinkers in the house so that we can quickly swap them over

It's goodbye from me and it's goodbye from the chickens. Surely it should be ' it's goodbye from me and it's goodbye from her' , as in the Two Ronnie's. 🙂 Actually, I used that line when I did a eulogy at my dad's funeral just as the coffin was passed through the curtains. I'm looking forward to seeing how you rig up for two gates as that is what I will be installing here. You've made me start scratching my head now as I can't remember if I got an earth rod when I bought my fence set up. 🤔Hmmmmmmm

You can use anything like a piece of angle iron Chris but as it rusts it becomes less and less effective. Something galvanized works much better in thd long run.

I've got some 2 metre lengths of re-bar which I could wire brush the rust off and spray on some galvanizing zinc. Do you reckon that would be as effective as a factory applied finish ?@@EnglishCountryLife

@@chrishamilton-wearing3232 Should certainly work for a while but will probably rust in the end

I've just looked on Amazonia and I can get a copper rod for about 12 quid. I am going to create a gravel path where the electric fence will run. As the ground here is so lumpy it's very difficult to mow the grass without ruining the blades so Iwill put down some weed fabric with gravel on top which will level out the lumps. Hopefully. @@EnglishCountryLife
