Consider my spirits officially lifted. The show averaged 9.4 million viewers. I thought the modern take on Jesus was pretty groovy - some have already incorporated it into Bible study classes that young people will really "get into." Other pop-culture-savvy Christians have clung to it as a refreshingly tuneful, exultant expression of how faith can triumph over doubt.

John Legend had big shoes to fill, and he did very well. Brandon Victor Dixon was AH-MAZING! He stole the show. Carl Anderson, may he rest in peace would've wildly approved! He has a rich, soulful voice. Thank you to the amazing cast of #JesusChristSuperstarLive for bringin back the classic! An entire new generation of JCS fans will ignite from this! We're die-hard fans, and I think that Ted Neeley would be proud! BRAVO!

In 1999: THE VATICAN officially endorsed Jesus Christ Superstar, including a production in its 2000 Jubilee Year celebrations. Many people misinterpret this terrific opera, especially the role of Judas. (Who was a very strong Christian, he sadly passed from Luekemia) Some Catholics, Protestants and Jews banded together as picketers, protesting outside the theater for days after the play opened. Why exactly? *Sigh* It's been endorsed by the Vatican.
    🙏
Anti Semetic? “Norman Jewison, who directed ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ directed the movie of ‘Superstar’ - in Israel! Now, if anybody could spot anti‐Semitism, wouldn’t you think it would be the man who directed ‘Fiddler on the Roof?’ ” The musical pushes back against its own skepticism, depicting the powers-that-be as corrupt, cynical and manipulative, exploiting the anxieties of Judas and the other apostles.
    🙏
My mother sang this opera all the time, so guess who else started memorizing every word. It reminds me of my mother who passed. It brings me comfort. It brings me joy! It taught me about Jesus in a lyrical, fun, emotional, and repetitive way! I wanted to know more about this Jesus.
    🙏
The original; Ted Neeley accepted Holy communion from me, on his knees, on a dirty floor a few years ago! FACT. Amazing man!
    🙏
Children of the 70's and now 2000 are singing the name of Jesus! *chills* NBC’s version showed reverence primarily toward the original musical, which for decades has told an ancient story in a way that pushes the audience to reconsider its relevance to the world today.
    🙏
Legend did great. The new production featured many strong Christians, even Alice Cooper (Jesus Freak)

"Live in Concert" was a misnomer. This was a fully staged theatrical production, and a really good one at that.

I first heard JCSS when I was in 3rd grade in NY, Ben Vereen played Judas. His voice brought tears to my eyes. Although this production isn't exactly the same sound I did enjoy it... and hopefully it will enspire more youngsters to turn or seek a better understanding of JC the man.

This concert was awesome, I cannot understand how Legend so talented, is so unaware... even ignorant when it comes to our reality and problems and like heavy luggage keeps carrying the liberal harmful cause!!

Andy Atkins The fact that you're speaking of our Lord and Savior in terms of Republican/Democrat shows YOU could benefit from watching this show! 😉 You might just enjoy the show. That is if you can see the screen from that high up pedal you've seem to have placed yourself upon.

Fun fact, Andy Atkins! For a very long time, the Catholic church had a total ban on theatre, until they started to budge when they allowed portrayals of things from the bible as a method of telling the stories, primarily focused around the Gospels and a few select Old Testament stories. This is something I learned about rather heavily as a Theatre student. So, if the Catholic church is literally the origin of people acting as figures of the bible, and the Vatican itself approved of this very musical...what's the issue?

Nothing can touch the original 1970 LP and 1973 Movie. Watched it last night and it was a weak performance. Vocals no where near the power of Murray Head and Ian Gillian from the original LP.

it is for today not 1973

The person is stating that the vocal performances are weaker than in the movie (which I agree). It doesn't matter if it's "for today" or 1973.

Thank You 31wst. That's exactly what I meant. 30-40-50 years ago Vocals were far more powerful and emotive. Watching the live show on Sunday none of them had the power and range like Ian Gillian, Murray Head, Ted Neely or Carl Anderson. THOSE guys were Singers!

Um. What. I grew up listening to the 1970 LP as well, but you're comparing studio recordings where the singers got to do multiple takes, have all of the benefits of someone coming along afterwards and tweaking the compression, the reverb, the levels, the mixing to make them sound as awesome as possible - to a LIVE performance? When there are actually professional singers today who lip sync to their music at live concerts?? Say what you want about John Legend, but I agree with others who say that Brandon Victor Dixon would've made Carl Anderson proud.

Definitely, but let's give them some credit though. At least they are actually vocalizing music. And they are also exposing this great music to a new generation. Remember, we're unfortunately living in an era when some fool gets on stage and yells rhymes into a microphone and that passes for MUSICAL talent!! It's good to see young(er) people singing and playing instruments!

The symbol of the play is satanic. This play is not of Jesus Christ, because it is a mockery of Jesus Christ. I pray that God in heaven will have mercy on all of you. God bless

Tastynurse, I disagree. I was in this play in college, and it told the story the way I could understand it.
