Keith, I love your channel! As someone who is pursuing minimalism and being essentialist in life and in gear I really appreciate your channel. It definitely makes me want to play more! I also love how you tie in bits of information from other people into the videos that apply to more than guitar playing, the first one that comes to mind is the clip of Neil Gaiman. To me , you seem to love education and have a curiosity that is infectious! I entered the giveaway because I’m chipless! And I still intend to purchase a mug and a t shirt at some point, purely because I want to support your channel. I’ve cut way back on social media and you tube. John A so true. It would be easy to want every cool sounding pedal and every beautiful guitar. It can also distract from achieving certain goals. I’ve had those moment when I realized I’ve spent X on a bunch of gear that I don’t really like or don’t really use that much and had I just saved up I could have purchased something that I really wanted and that would be much better quality etc.

Hey Keith, thanks in part to you I've bought my only guitar for 2020 last week (An Ibanez Semi Hollow). I still look at gear videos but practice at the same time. Every time I look at gear online, I think "I could be playing instead". It's such a simple habit to get into; but it's so true. The phrase 'beware the man with one gun' has now entered my lexicon. As a winner of one of the BC picks, I ordered the 2.5mm Jazz LG 100. It’s easily become my favorite pick, supplanting my previous brands 2.0 pick. Thanks, Keith!! I would not have ever take the dive to paythe $75 price tag for such a pick if I am being honest but do feel quite lucky to now own one and I don’t see me ever putting myself in a position to lose it. I live in the small town in Tennessee where this company is from. The material they use for the picks is very expensive material used by NASA and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They fellow who founded the company was working somewhere out there and using the material. With a tiny piece of waste material he asked if he could have it to make a mandolin pick out of it. The rest was history. This is an amazing product and is completely unique. If you ever lose the tack on the pick, you just wash it with liquid soap and it comes right back. I love these things. They are very fast, easy to hang on to and glide over the stings like no other pick.

You've probably noticed that "simple" does not always mean "inexpensive" nor the other way around.
The couple of amp reviews I've done, of amps I know as well as anyone who is not so technical (me) can, haven't done well. And though I enjoy going down a rabbit hole with the best of them (see upcoming videos for proof of that) this is a part-time job for me. I have a list of about 24 vids right now.

Looking forward to your impression of Winter Namm 2020. Query: When did a guitar become something other than a well-crafted, functional instrument? I hear a lot of chatter about the beauty of the colors and the eye-pleasing grain of the wood -- never understood that. Maybe it's just me.

    • @fivewattworld
      @fivewattworld  4 роки тому +1

To be clear, I didn't go to NAMM. I made that video at home this morning.
I'm guilty of thinking that guitars are beautiful things, but generally beauty follows functions for me.

@@fivewattworld My first 'quality' guitar was a 73 LP. It's aged about as gracefully as I have. The finish has cracks, there's a worn spot (where the pickguard use to be) from anchoring three of my fingers as I played night after night, the binding has yellowed (probably, in part, from the smokey bars), it's had two frett jobs and a pickup swap. In my eyes, it's beautiful--it tells my story. In the end, however, old guitars are just that . . . old guitars . . . sometimes that's good, sometimes ... not so much.

@@fivewattworld It started with minis . . . In 78 or 79 I had a Dimarzio put in the bridge (seemed to be the thing to do at the time) . . . put the guitars away in 89 and started a new career. Love your videos and the underlying concept driving them.
Just one thing I need to clarify re the Blue Chip competition:
This Gleam outfit want to glean my password to Google or to my email (not on Google platform in my case) ???? Are they for real ????
I’m not gonna cough that to anyone ... let alone an entity I’ve never even heard of. It seems that quite a number of people are prepared to do just that for the slim chance of receiving a product that holds high regard. Am I misreading something here ? If I’m right then unfortunately the competition, although a brilliant idea and generous of BC, goes against the grain of your channel’s intended aims. This aside... the rules rule... keep up the great work.

I understand your hesitancy. I was a university registrar in my previous life, the keeper of institutional privacy if you will. Read over their privacy statement and it might answer your concerns. I can tell you that Gleam seems to be the largest company doing this so after looking into everything I read said that they are doing it right. I don't believe they are sharing password information, simply that you have an identity on the platform via their API (like I said this used to be my daily gig.)
But again, I totally understand if you decide to not come along. Thanks for watching.
      Keith

Perhaps the only "unfettered..." music is singing. No economics, you already got what you need to do it; forget all the gear unless you want amplification. Since I can't sing either... I'll just go on trying to play the guitar. I've already got a lifetime supply of Fender, heavy and Gibson, (triangular) medium to wear out on my Elixirs. Rock on! (It ain't lack of equipment that's holding me back...)

Mine don't seem to but I'd tell you that I don't hit the guitar very hard. I have a buddy, Dan Lurie at FYD Amps that is always burning up the pointy ends of his picks. I should send him one of my BC picks and see if he can wear it out. Except he plays very different picks than I do.

I don't have a Blue Chip pick, but I do have a question. I am still in the "learning process", like 6 months in. I'm strumming & picking scales, so would a pick like this be suited to me or would it be better to just stay out of the way of the pick until I can at least be able to utilize one properly? Thanks! For reference, picks I'm using and kind of enjoying are Dunlop Nylon .46mm as its easy to strum, but I like the sound & feel of the Ultex picks better (Dunlop .60 or a Clayton .45). When doing scales I use either a Jazz III or a Dunlop Flow .60. I'm still new to all of this & trying a ton of different picks (probably bought enough picks that past 6 months I could have at least bought a BC :D )

If you win the guys at blue chip will be able to tell you which of their pics is very similar to what you've been playing. In my experience, good gear is rarely lost on the player, even a relatively new one.

I've only been following music stuff on UA-cam for maybe eight months or so. Over time it's gotten pretty apparent just how close some of these channels are to the equipment manufacturers. I watch demos because I really enjoy listening to some of these players, but I do get tired of all the selling and it's only getting worse with NAMM. I'm just not that into gear anyway. Once I find something I like, I stick with it. I've had my number one guitar since 1991 (I was 14 years old when I got it). She's beat up and has literally been around the world a few times but I love her.
