+Nunya Bidness If you covered all the holes in that bottom "trap" part it would stop the venturi effect and when you used the rifle it would hopefully spit the spider out the barrel (probably not very fast though).

Works well with the venturi effect. In the Bahamas we have huge spiders and tarantulas. You would need a 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" PVC pipe to get them sucked up.
Not bad, I'm in australia so I may need to use something like 3" PVC and a scuba tank...

I think our largest spider is the biggest in the world from what I remember hearing. It is the giant huntsman which has a 12 inch leg span. Can I suck that up with this? If you aren't formalist with huntsmans I will give some details on it. If they are above there defence is to drop on its target, they are non venomous but do leave a nasty bite and are one of the fastest spiders in the world.

They may just not have a venom that effects us or larger pray, or possibly deliver a dose that is efficient to deliver a result that we would consider 'venomous'. I think i shall have to google that one

I made one of these with my 6-year-old son; we had a great time! We couldn't find any spiders, so we picked up pieces of lint around the house.

We use a Black & Decker Dustbuster . . . works great on any bugs. The occasional stick bug hasn't a chance. We keep a piece of tape over the end to keep them from working their way back around the flapper.

Perhaps remove the end cap with spider, and set it on the end of the barrel. In theory it should work the same, except it would shoot the spider out of the bottom, and not into the end cap. So aim well!
Reverse the air flow somehow.
Just move the air nozzle (tiny red tube) to blow in the very back of the gun. The air will rush over the spider trap, drawing it up and out the front. Shooting spiders at people won't gain you any brownie points though. :)

you could add a screen in the barrel of the gun (like he did with the coffee lid but just poke holes in that, and instead of drilling holes in the cap just leave it without any holes) then with the cap off of the bottom suck the spider in, that way the spider wont go down through but be stuck in the screen, then simply put the cap on and fire again and it will send the compressed air through the barrel forwards propelling the spider to his death.
Love this thing! I bet you could produce more suction using a 135° T instead of a 90° T so the air flow is directed towards the back and is more inline with the barrel.

This is pretty cool for around the house here in the states. I haven't made one yet, but I will eventually. I like that its non-lethal to the spiders.

I am really happy that it's a humane Spider Rifle, because I thought it was the usual Bodyspray+Lighter combination which burns insects. This is much better!

thats all good and dandy for harmless spiders, but not for black widows, wolf spiders, brown recluse, etc. spiders that live near my house.... think i will stick to spraying them with Axe body spray and setting them on fire...
I made the rifle with three alterations for black widow spiders. First, I used a much larger receptacle of clear plastic with the bottom cut out and fitted with a fine screen to allow air flow. The second difference is a PVC valve between the barrel and the receptacle, so that once the spider is visible in the receptacle, I can close the valve, detach it from the rifle, and place it in the freezer for an hour to immobilize the spider. Third, I used clear tubing for the main barrel so that I can tell right away if the spider got a grip on the inside of the tube. When that happens, you just stop spraying for a sec until it starts to move, then blast it the rest of the way into your receptacle. The bottom of the receptacle twists off so the frozen spider can be dumped out on the driveway and safely stomped. I made 3 receptacles so I can keep going after catching one spider.

actually, you can do that just by modifying this design slightly. just suck up a spider, then take the comp. air tube out of the hole on the top, and put it in one of the holes on the bottom. spiders will be shot towards your enemies.

Actually, this is a Spiny orb-weaver, of the family Araneidae and genus Gasteracantha, whereas the crab spider is of the family Thomisidae, and mostly predate by ambushing prey in flowers and whatnot.

I know. I would hold the air duster upside down over it. It's extremely cold, like freon. It would freeze him, so I can put it in an ice cube. The spider should survive, so when it thaws, it woud crawl out of the glass.
Those spiny orbweavers never go away, but they make nice webs!

the original doesn't need modification to shoot spiders. just hold your hand over the exhaust port (the thing with all the holes) and boom, now it shoots the spider out.
That would scare the shit out of me if I was that spider.
My only concern, is the content of the air duster. the content of the can is not compressed air. It's actually Tetrafluoroethane (AKA R134a AKA Non-destructive Freon refrigerant.) .. Over-use of the gas (holding the valve open for too long) will freeze the spider. (Now, I know the arachnophobics reading, and making the "Kill It With FIRE!" statements will say "GO FOR IT!!" but, if the intent is to keep the spider alive, only use the gas in short bursts, and NEVER invert the canister! Doing so will allow liquid R134a to enter the straw, and vent, causing instant freezing! (to say nothing of Frostbite if you get it on yourself before and as it vaporizes.) I've also used a similar idea to remove mud & paper wasps that got loose in the home (the perils of living in an old nearly 200-yr old farm house.).. and added a 1/4-turn valve between the catcher canister to hold the little suckers in.
I put little pins in the chamber to impale the spider as he is sucked into it.
I think I should use 6in tubes and a diesel air compressor to build a spider rifle instead of what I've seen in that video, because once I found a spider bigger than a softball in my kitchen sink...
You could probably modify it so that instead of leading into the little chamber it went to a barrel right under the top one and it just shot them out like that.
