Andrew Latimer is a freaking master! Holy shit what a solo.
Yep.... he's amazing....unsung for so many years
ICE from I Can See Your House From Here is even better for emotional rip your heart ❤️ out guitar. Stationary Traveller is a concept album about 2 lovers one in West Berlin and the other in East Berlin wanting to be with each other but the Wall proves to be the obstacle in their relationship. It’s a story about Communism and Freedom. Camel never forgot they were a Prog band like so many others did.
Rand Kelly absolutely. Ice is such an emotional tune. Sad but beautiful.
It doesn't get any better than a song written by Andy Latimer where he plays some of the most melodic guitar you'll ever hear, plus in the middle plays the pipes of pan. Brilliant.
Fantastic Band……. It is a real shame that they weren’t more popular in the USA!
To all shredders - this is how you play guitar. Quality of notes, not number of notes. Emotion. Listen and learn.
Andy Latimer is one of those rare guitar players who feels every note that he plays. This is a song about parting and loss. Frankly if you can't feel the emotion in this song , there's something wrong with you. Thanks for playing it Justin.
Great work by Andrew Latimer on guitar and flute. On tracks like "Summer Lighting", "Sahara", "Lawrance" we hear a real guitar hero in action.
Pure feeling .
Nice reaction to a fine piece of music, my favourite album by them is Moonmadness very 70s sound.
OMG, yeah! Moonmadness>Lunacy>Lunar Sea.
A fantastic album, very jazz influenced and perfect music for a really good band to show their chops.
I'm fortunate to have seen Camel a couple of times. One show they turned into an official DVD Coming Of Age. A band very near and dear to my heart.
I saw Camel a few times in the 80's and 90's, their sound was so perfect you'd think you were wearing headphones, the clarity was astounding. I went to many shows in those times and saw all my favourite bands but only Pink Floyd and Genesis were on equal footing with what I saw with Camel.
Man I was just stuck in my building elevator for close to 2 hours all by my lonesome. Although I stayed calm through the ordeal, I could feel my anxiety building. So not in a great mood and came online just to see what my man Justin has in store for us today. I saw the title (which brighten my mood with a smile) and couldn't click on if fast enough. This song was introduced to me, I think by Mr Sidecar Dog (much thanks) about 6 months ago. Since then I've heard it well over 100 times, I loved it so much I needed to know how to play it on the guitar. The more I listen to Camel, the more they remind me of Pink Floyd. Agree Andrew Latimer is definitely an underrated guitarist and is quickly becoming one of favorites. I love the mood this song creates with the guitar and keys, the flute solo was great as well but as you said Justin, it's all about that guitar solo. Just close your eyes and ride along on the melody, so beautiful. I haven't listen to their whole catalog yet, but if you are going to revisit Camel. The song Rajaz from the album Rajaz, is fantastic
You always get a pristine and perfect performance and sound from Camel...
Regarding the title Stationary Traveller my 1st thought was this lyric from 'Best Way to Travel' by the Moody Blues:
And you can fly
High as a kite if you want to
Faster than light if you want to
Speeding through the universe
Thinking is the best way to travel.
I've been using this song to test my hearing on ultra high frequency sounds. I guess due to age, those high bird sounds are less noticeable.
Yog-Sothoth Great song and recording!
Superb solo. The flute like sound and the starting part is so well done
It really is! Glad you liked it too!
It is a flute!
@@gunvaldmkilli9131 It's actually pan pipes.
@@kingcurry6594 Yes.i`ve seen him perform with it..Pan Pipes is a kind of flute i guess.(Maybe not)
Good choice. Andy Latimer is such an expressive guitarist. Shows how an instrumental can have emotional depth too.
The whole album is worth a listen particularly Long Goodbyes, it'll have you in tears.
Snowgoose, the whole album is superb, so is Rajaz, lawrence is my favorite off that one, Stationary Traveller is wonderful too, love your take on it.
Nice sounding song. Beautiful guitar solo. Thanks for the review.
While I LOVE Snow Goose, and Rain Dances... the album "Nude", stays with me... It's a great concept album and one well-worth checking out.
Me too John
🐫👍👍
@@neilhinks5734 Drafted was alwasys my favorite from that album. The moment when the guitar solo starts ... so nice 😍
Camel, in my opinion, went to a more pop-style after the album Moonmadness. Like Breathless, I Can See Your House From Here and Single Factor were more pop-influenced. After that, they went back to the prog style with much more Andy's guitar solo than before (Dust And Dreams, Harbour Of Tears, etc). I think Stationary Traveller was a good combination of prog and pop. Long Goodbye is another good song in this album. I've waited for more Camel reactions on this channel for a long time. Thank you.
I mean, there is "nothing wrong" with pop. Breathless features vocals of Richard Sinclair after all
I love Camel! Another very underrated band. Very emotional music. Flight Of The Snow Goose is an absolute masterpiece but so is most of their music. Another astute description of some great music. Thanks again Justin. 😊
JP my man is always reacting to the best( underpopular) bands. Thanks man
the miking and recording is so clear
Man, you got it! I see so many YT reviewers who keep disturbing the groove with inane comments. Such as, pausing to say "wow, that guitar" when the guitar is speaking perfectly well for itself. I like that you just l;et the groove happen while your expression made all the comment necessary to let us know what you thought.
More power to you, man.
Thank you so so much Kimdino! I'm glad you enjoyed the video
All camel is worth listening to. Ice or song within a song. Snow goose if you want a whole album. Ice builds beautifully.
Sometimes I have wished Camel would have had more of a vocalist, but as I age, I am starting to think that the limited vocals may have led to more expressive instrumentals. Whatever the case, this music is an absolute gift to humanity.
This is one depressing album. Camel is my favorite band, I just love pretty much everything they've ever done. My favorite song by them is Song Within a Song, just out of this world. Moonmadness, Snow Goose, Mirage, Camel, Rajaz, Nod and a Wink... so many fantastic albums :)
I totally agree with you: I love all of their albums, but the first four and the last two have always been my favorite ones.
Rajaz is my fave Camel album. A real guitar experience.
@@FLASHAHOLIC_TV It's so great, Three Wishes is probably my favorite Camel Opener
Love the whole album, try 'Long Goodbyes'. Great tune.
Beautiful song. Ice, Elke and After all these years are also beautiful Camel instrumentals.
You could’ve told me this was a ‘lost‘ track from Floyd’s The Final Cut album or from an Alan Parsons Project album like Vulture Culture or Ammonia Avenue and I would have believed it
I enjoyed this - part of a concept album dealing with division of the Berlin Wall The song captures the feel well - exuding hope as well as caution for the ultimate outcome
Track stands well on its own but takes on a much deeper meaning when understood within the concept of the album
Glad you chose this
I love this album. Would love more Camel reactions. Actually this reminds me how much this band is underappreciated...
''The Camel groove'', its such a sweet place
Jp, very, very well said!!! It is phenomenal!! Equal to david gilmour, in fact, i personally believe he is better, but at least equal, listen to "ice" hymn to her" just as spectacular!
Ty Doug!
Just the title describes Camel style in a perfect way...
After hearing about Camel for years, this was actually my first listen, but not my last. Thanks for this.
Peace from SF
Talking heads"Remain in light" the whole album produced by Brian Eno. Peter Gabriel made a cover of "Listening wind" and there is a famous video of "Once in a lieftime"
Love Camel :) ... Check out Snow Goose from the "Alive Record" album .... or First Light or Unevensong from Rain Dances :)
What a solo! Andrew is of the best players but the best emotional player straight to the heart
Enjoyed the song a lot AND your reaction as well. Nice choice, JP!
Excellent appraisal! This in-depth understanding of the musical content and explanation is what is lacking from the reaction video's on YT ….where the only thing they can say is 'Wow ' or 'F-ck' etc - I like your style!
Thanks so much wtc!
Okay, You're screwing with us. When will you release Gates?
The opening drew me in and then we got the pipes and then the guitar with that constant beat behind holding it all together. I loved this.
Hello 😷 Pal, Some other Great Camel songs . Sasquatch , Ice , Echoes , Lunar Sea, Song within a song , The Sleeper ,Eye of the Storm , Breathless , Chord change ,First light- Oh and Andy Latimer is one of my favorite guitarist 🎸 and I was lucky enough to see them live years ago and it was incredible.✌️😎
one of teh few songs in human kind history that the song live up to its name fully! its a journey while you sit and listen. stationary traveling
Lovely stuff Justin, Camel, very influential band, love 'em to bits. I'd like to recommend (again) 'Blue' by Kevin Ayers with the guitar work of the late Ollie Halsall, a largely overlooked genius.
What a great song. Love that pan flute
Great instrumental! Very atmospheric and emotional. Reminds me a lot of Mark Knopfler’s soundtrack to the underrated film “Local Hero”. BTW, you haven’t done Dire Straits...recommend Brothers in Arms.
Ps, with the lockdown I’ve been watching a lot of “walking tours” on YT (I’ve become a seasoned “recliner traveler” :)
The first time I heard Mark playing Brothers in Arms...Andy Latimer came to mind..,
If you loved this tune, you absolutely HAVE to hear ICE from the album “I can See Your House From Here”. You’ll be glad you did. I find the Stationary Traveller album to be not that great. The only other song/tune I like is Pressure Points. I saw Camel on this tour and they were awesome. Andy Latimer is definitely under appreciated. One of the finest guitarists this country has produced. 👍🏻😃
When you mention "foreboding", I think of leaden dark gray skies over East Berlin
Andy Lattimer always stood in the space between David Gilmour and Steve Hackett for me and is most definitely in my top five guitarists. Yes, Camel did keep their prog sound but it changed with the times. This was a great album and so were many others. By this time Andy was very much the leader of the band and his haunting and emotional playing is always a big feature.
I love Camel. Thanks for reacting to it. The entire catalogue is excellent. No duds. This is one of the groups still on my bucket list to see live. My friend made me a mixed tape with Camel on it in 1978 then moved away. He never credited the groups on the tape so it wasn't till the late 80's I learned the name of the group!
There is a great version of this on the live album Pressure Points. In fact Camel were like many 70s bands who really came into their own live. I can recommend the re issued version of Moonmadness, which has also a wonderful concert at Hammersmith in 76. If you listen carefully you can hear me shouting loudly from the fifth row.
That was excellent, Justin! Beautiful, melodic, inspiring. I first discovered Camel when I bought ‘Mirage’ in 1974. Then I got ‘The Snow Goose’ (I shouldn’t forget the 'Music inspired by...', we don’t want another knock on the door from Paul Gallico!) and Moonmadness. I was playing ‘Mirage’ just yesterday. Sometime in the 80s they just seemed to disappear from view so I can’t recall if I’ve heard ‘Stationary Traveller’ before. I’ve seen them in concert three times and they were always excellent.
Echoes, Rajaz, Song Within a Song and The White Rider are some other fantastic Camel songs
Snow Goose album in its entirety is amazing well
This is perfect music 💥💥💥😂💪🏻🤩
Essa musica è perfeita! Camel minha banda preferida ! ♡♡♡
You should listen to ICE by camel - the best guitar instrumental of all time and his most famous
Progmasters!!!!
That smirk at 4:01 says it all
🙃
Regarding the title & the sense of foreboding tinged with hope. This is from a concept album of the same name. And Camel were damn good at concept albums as they could tell a whole story just using musical moods.
The theme is about the Berlin Wall and its erection splitting up many families, lovers etc. After the wall was built many people found that, even though their family may be only a few hundred yards away, they might as well be in living on the far side of the world. Hence the concept of Stationary Travelling. They haven't moved an inch, but they are now of the far side of the world. They are in East Germany, the world of the Stazi. The Stazi are the secret police who might be stood right next to you and you wouldn't know it. Admiration of any Western item, or having an book that hasn't been approved the the political commisars, is liable to get you violently interrogated & thrown into prison.
This song forms sort of an interlude on the album. The sense of foreboding is for the Stazi & the whole E.German system where people are made to become paranoid of even closest friends & family members. The vague sense of hope is for the possibility of escaping across the wall to the West.
Hope this helps. Read up on the Berlin Wall, then go listen to the whole album and it will all make sense. Musical tastes differ widely but I believe that Camel can carry anyone who is willing to listen through an immersive experience.
If some day you feel to listen to a whole album straight, try Harbour Of Tears or Dust And Dreams from these guys, 2 of the finest emotional concept albums ever. Anyway you can pick any of their albums in their whole discog, there's absolutely nothing to reject. Even the album Single Factor, which was made to fulfill a contract, has very very good material in it.
Alex Alex just be prepared for The Hour Candle. We could be here a while 😃
I was plinking on my guitar thinking this song needs more guitar. Wrong. Along comes some pleasant moody guitar lines althrough to the ending whines fade out. Not mind blowing but pleasant. Camel’s new to me, wonder why.
Oh well, many bands fly under the radar.
Back to painting, take care everyone,
Peace and Music
Enjoy! What're you painting today?
JustJP
Wheels within Wheels, a stylized version of Ezekiel’s vision of somewhere, maybe heaven or space. It’s all monochromatic in grays, black and white. The entire show I’m working on will be this way. Thx, for asking. :)
Never heard this track or this album. I like it. You should try some solo David Gilmour as a contrast - Mihalis, There's No Way Out of Here , Raise My Rent
One of my favorite album! The rest of the album incredible. Go through the album!
God, I love this band. It's too bad they didn't get the exposure they deserved.
As already said you should listen to ice (live performance). In my opinion the best guitar instrumental of all time. Nobody can put the emotion and feeling into each note as Andy can.
Andy Latimer! King of emotions! Love this guy so much... so much goosebumps with this solos. React to ICE or LAWRENCE next for serious emotions.
Katatonia - My Twin
Estrum - All I Need
Anathema - Flying
Klone - Immersion
Like JP... I love the guitar solo. Nice uncomplicated tune. Nothing spectacular... but very pleasant to listen to.
I think one of the best Camel song is from their last studio album "Nod And A Winkle". The song is A Boy's Life. That song is as well very emotional!
*A Nod And A Wink ;)
Camel : Coming Of Age
Nektar : A Tab In The Ocean ; Over Krakatoa
Another perfect solo of Latime is Camel - Ice. You need to hear the song
I'm a sucker for this type of guitar solos. Similiar to David Gilmour and Gary Moore in my ears. I got my first Camel album with "A Live Record" and after that Moonmadness and Snowgoose, which pretty much is like a reprise of what I had with Live record. But then I got Nude and Stationary Traveller. Both concept albums I really liked a lot too. A different band I think than from the earlier albums. Due in part to Peter Bardens not being in the band anymore. Camel is one of those bands with some great albums and -to me- some less great albums. I don't have all their music, but I did get and absolutely loved Rajaz from 1999. Recommended listening! There are some interesting names on the list of collaborating musicians from the 80's on. Several members from Sky, APP, Roxy Music, Kayak, Fish. All in all a band to keep an eye on if you like emotional guitar solos. Best way is then to get the live albums as the solos are then even longer ;-)
rare to see a young man falling in progrock trap !cool
Thank you!
Very, very Pink Floydish. Enjoyed that very much. Don’t remember them but I wasn’t a real big Prog guy, not that I didn’t like it, I just concentrated on other parts of rock for my listening pleasure. Thought this was going to be Sopwith Camel, a band I never developed a taste for but you might want to give them a try. Camel was ☄️
Time travel! It was good !!!♥️
Nice track, but in my opinion the album is one of Camel's weaker efforts (though better than it's predecessor The Single Factor). Most people would probably cite Snow Goose as a favourite, but I'd say check out Mirage and Moonmadness as their best albums.
"Who We Are" from their I Can See Your House album - my fav Camel track of all time.
totally agree, I had the album on heavy rotation in my car back in the day, but this song was the one I waited for.
Really? There are classics like "Song Within a song", "Lady Fantasy", "Nimrodel", "Echoes", "Air Born" and many others to know before that.
In my opinion, the best Camel album was their second one, Mirage. The White Rider and Lady Fantasy are perfect prog rock songs.
I really like this song it was awesome reminded me of ELO
this is cool
a band I haven't heard as much of
Yes nice and atmospheric, but for me it just doesn't go anywhere. Then again it is Stationary Traveler.
Why has not anobody mentioned their best song Ice from I can see your house??!!
I've already heard it😄
JustJP Aha... Did you post the track listening?
This album seemed to be an attempt to get a little more commercial success and it worked to an extent. The long goodbye got a bit of mainstream radio air time in the UK - One of the few times I've heard Camel played on the radio. They're grossly underrated their album Snow goose is a thing of great beauty.
By the way I'm not sure if electronic is your thing but how about doing Kraftwerk, one of the most influential bands of all time. Autobahn or any track from Man machine would be obvious choices. I recommend Computer Love from the album The Mix though.
ImI
Camel - Ice
Must be!
Andy is not overated with his fans
Stationary travelers are soldiers
Please react to more Camel, they are so great.
And you haven't heard ICE yet or have you?
At this point Camel, like many '70s bands, was pressured for radio friendly material and singles. Nevertheless, there are gems on the later albums. For me, the "Stationary Traveller" songs sound better on the live album, "Pressure Points" (e.g. "Fingertips").
Overall, I think Camel was never the same after Peter Bardens left after "Breathless" - an underrated album. Others argue it was after bassist Doug Ferguson left but I disagree.
JP, you must listen the NUDE album.
Whenever girlfriends are involved, music quality suffers and this in such awful pain it's had to invoke a travelling Peruvian pipe band, complete with prerecorded backing track, in a last ditch attempt to save itself. The guitar solo is irrelevant in true Parisien Walkways style.
I've been waiting for someone to do a reaction video to this song so I'm glad you did...great review!
BTW...check out the live version in 1984 . It's even better than the one on the album. ua-cam.com/video/Z2doi5pKgWQ/v-deo.html
Ty Lindon! Yes that version is great!
Live version is better.
Check Out Yes " Madrigal" or Jehtro tull " Elegy" live 1985, IF you like classical influences.
Or Peter Gabriel" Here comes THE flood" about global warming.
From 1977. Live in Athens 1987 is best!
Try Nektar please !
Way better live!!
I bet!
I even prefer Latimer before Gilmore!
Sounds are reminiscent of other bands (AP, some PF and Dire Straights vibes in there). Quite enjoyed this, esp. after could not get on board with Snowgoose (OK, but not great). I'd give this a score of "B+", which is the highest I've ever rated a Camel song :)
This is bad camel imo. Check it Song Within a Song, or if you're willing to listen to a concept album, The Snowgoose is legendary (but really must be listened to as an album)
That said, glad u liked it - even though I'm not a fan of this era I respect that u liked it and glad u enjoyed
This is not the Camel I like. Good guitar players like Andy Latimer do know how to play well every time, but the song is a bit boring and too sentimental. I like music which doesn't define your mood right away. Sad song - so I feel sad. Happy song - so I feel happy. There has to be more, something that gives space to your emotions. This didn't. Sorry.
The beginning is a rip-off of Private Investigations by Dire Straits!!!!!
Hopefully it was unintentional, but it definitely similar. Since this song came out 2 years after Private Investigations there could have been some influence.
