Teddy Pendergrass was a gift from a very kind and generous God.
❤
Okay. Thelma Houston tore up the dance floor with this song, but Teddy burned down the HOUSE!!! Both equally great versions.
Amen.
The Communards version is also great
I remember when this came out, I was 12 years old my Mother bought the Album. The entire Album was the bomb, Teddy's voice was magnificent! I knew that at twelve. Then later Thelma came out with her version, it was nice, but she was no Teddy, not even close.
@@natalieburris2871 Dear Natalie, I feel your pleasure. Thanks for the feedback 😀
Teddy burn it down Gloria rebuilt it
When musicians still played music and not computers.

Teddy Pendergrass one of the best male soul voices ever
Close the door....from Perú
Him and Levi Stubbs are a country mile above the rest
Caravan Tuggers: Absolutely!
One of many!
@@sadielilley8405 l agree!
Neither Teddy or these guys are in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Ridiculous flat out criminal
Teddy was the king.....loved everything he did......
Not here to bicker. I have loved Soul Music since I was young, or whatever one desires to label it, R & B, or whatever, but I would never consider it Rock N Roll, just like I consider Maynard Ferguson-Jazz, Ray Charles-Did he play rock? I consider him R & B or Jazz... My favorites since youth are Chicago- Rock, and Stevie Wonder-Soul. I also love Doowutchyalike, Same Song, etc. by Digital Underground-There I go, there i go, there I go...but In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is Rock and Humpty is R&B- Mixin it with the Hip Hop Swing Beat. All around the world...hibbie dibbie ya don't quit. If George Jones got into the Soul Music Hall of Fame, I would wonder. Just sayin'. Good day!
yes what the hell is going on
This is part of Rock. They should be in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Rock doesn't have one definition. There are so many examples of what rock is, such as being combination of 12 bar blues with Jazz. Or Blues on Steroids with Zeppelin. Rockabilly. It's natural development of music of styles, influences, coming together starting mostly in Black Culture in America. Both covers of this song became #1 hits to show testament of this song as being great.

...It was 1976... This is as wonderful today as it was in 1976!...❤
*1975
I never mistreated a woman in my life and never will they are quins
@@JulioC.Narvaez I think that you misinterpreted my reply and I should clarify the reference .
In Britain 1976 was a very hot summer and there was an explosion in the population of ladybirds in Britain , there were so many that it was easy if you were not careful to tread on them as you walked along .
So the comment was referring to that year and the strange and hot summer . I deleted the comment so as to avoid any misunderstandings .
1973, Thelma was 1976
1976 ... my sophomore year in high school! Wow!
Never had a clue there was more versions before The Communards did this in the 80s! Thanks What we do in the Shadows for bringing me here
Thelma Houston did quite a famous version of it too. I like all the different versions but Teddy's has a slight edge. The Thelma version comes second followed by the Communards.
Dude that scene with the vampire straight vibing had me rolling
This original still burns hot, but the song lasted well throughout the decades in all its formats.
Sounds like God himself is singing this! Have mercy!
This is accurate! He had a voice that was unreal. There’s nobody who sing heartbreak and make it heard in the next county. What a treasure he was.
No God’s better…….but thanks for HIm sending us teddy pendergras!
Teddy had a tragic life but his voice is perfect
Teddy and David Ruffin from the Temptations had a gift like NO others
The moment I hear Teddy's voice, I break out in goosebumps....he is truly missed.
Ooh! When I read that I broke out in goosebumps.
i look like frozen chicken. That voice....

Facts
Not going good lol but music certainly helps!
...and even 2025...the Pendergrass groove is mightier than an eternal flame and boogies on even longer.
My goodness Teddy Pendergrass’ voice is incredible!
yes sir
You’re both right
I feel bad the young will never appreciate Teddy and all the other great voices!! To hear Teddy say " don't leave me this way"...super sad, he had no way of knowing what was to come!!I still listen to all the great singers of the past!! Wake up the children was ahead of its time! 76 and I still groove to good jams!!ABN LRP67 💙😁
The best version EVER
Neil Bailey it's original so yeah!!!
The original, and the best!!!
indeed
the 12" version is really the best ever BUT both are by Teddy so yeah....:)
Definitely!
Teddys version is unbelievable! What a powerhouse!!!!
I typically I despise covers but occasionally someone matches or surpasses! But why are we even shocked at what T.P. can do😉
This is the original. Thelma Houston had a big disco hit with her cover version, which is the most well-known, but this is the original.
This is what you call music...a total classic! Love it!
I live in a small town in Italy. I was 13 when I first heard this song. English is not my mother language so it's very difficult for me to explain my feelings when I listened over and over to this masterpiece in a town where this music sounded so...like an alien from another planet!
P.I.-(Philadelphia), Stax-(Memphis), Chess-(Chicago) and of course Motown-(Detroit), shaped the childhood of my life. They all should all be museums dedicated to the history of shaping black America in the late 1960s to the 80s.
Amen
Things have never been nearly as sexy as they used to be ever since Teddy left us all.
Raise your hand if you're listening to this song in 2023!
Aren't we all? Unless there are time travellers here 🤔

Brother Ken Gamble and Brother Leon Huff are a phenomenonal record production pair that brought the best of our soul sounds from Brotherly Love.
Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, the Jacksons, the O'Jays, and Brother Billy Paul.
Respect to you, Gamble and Huff.
Use to play the 8track tape in my car back in the 70s, of Harold Mervin,
I’m 71 now and when ever I listen to the music of the 70s I’m back there again, faces come flooding back, and good times.❤😊
sir I'm in my 50s now but I remember this amazing music as a kid and still and will love this music till the day I die ..... rock on my brother
Exactly!
Word on the grapevine is this record took under 30 minutes to produce, Harold and the boys rocked up , did it once, and once is what your hearing now. First take knocked it out the Ballpark.
🙏R.I.P T.P & Harold Melvin🙏
Amen ✝️
A magical combination.... Gamble & Huff, Teddy, Harold, orchestra, back ups, all created the best there is.
Starting at about 3:50 whoever the cat is, on those keyboards… has got his act TOGETHER!!! Wow. I wish that they had doubled the last three minutes of this.
Teddy represents the total vintage Philadelphia music scene. My goodness what a talent. This man makes me proud to be from Philly.
This came out when Billy Penn ruled the skies over Broad Street. 😊
Now the Comcasts, Liberty Places, and others are the proverbial presiders over Philly.
We should put a statue of Teddy on the top of the newer Comcast building. Then he can smile down on all of us.
Yes. Philadelphia Soul just doesn't get its respect.
Shame Philly is a wreck now
This man makes me wish I was from Philly. Many might hear his voice but I feel it.
You thought you had soul? This is one of the greatest songs ever. What a groove. Love Thelma but this is up there with the very best. Wonderful.
This IS THE ORIGINAL!!!
I danced in76 at 26 it's 24,
Im 74 now and STILL jamming to it!
Keep jamming❤❤❤❤
My mum used to play this in the 70s when I was a kid and she used to get sent by it. Now I'm the one getting sent to places I ain't been before.
This song has everything.
The best intro I ever heard, bitter sweet, oh and his voice!!
It literally makes me smile all the way through with a lump in my throat at the same time.
And the cool disco section you can have a right dance too
Jesus above, this song is everything in the world to a music lover and I am ever grateful I can pull this out the bag so to speak when ever the mood takes me.
Love, looove, love it!!!
I just listened to the long 6 minute version and the comments were turned off so come in over here and listened to it for the 5th time tonight.
Thelma Huston's is nice but this is more than sensational!
You don't make since CAN YOU SPELL BETTER where she sent YOU to SCHOOL I HOPE !
this is my go to jam
Kenney Gamble said with raw talent like pendergrass voice, you got to feed it raw meat. And the hits came flowing out, hit after hits. That's the Philadelphia sound.
remember listening to TP on WDAS, 105.3 in Philly...the quiet storm, Philly soul, Dr. J, World B, Darryl Dawkins, Grover, the foookin 76ers, Eagles, Phillies AND Flyers were all championship contending teams in the 80s, we had LEGENDS, Doc, Schmidt, Carlton, Jaws, Reggie White, Wilbert, Randall Cunningham... oh fuck it was great back in the day, gas was .99 cents right over the bridge in Jersey, a slice an a drink was $1.50, movies $3.50, I saw Gladys Knight & Pips at the Valley Forge Music Fair 2 times in the 80s, tickets were under $20 for a good seat.
Raw meat results in pure sexiness.
Brings me to tears...so happy i was an adult woman and could appreciate all the emotion and every song he sings has special meaning for me... God Bless Teddy, no other can compare...
THEODORE PENDERGASS aka the voice
These kids today will never understand this amazing music.
Gamble & Huff and the "Philly Sound." Young folks, listen and learn something.
They don’t make music like this anymore. Singers with soul and an inner quality that you’re born with. What an era !!
But it's heartbreaking that often the soul came from sorrows
What an era is right!!!! I’m so glad I lived my 20’s through it!
Well said. It's sad what our music has become 😪
@pepitolopez8751 really? Times change. So does music. To say there is NO good music is a lie. You just haven't found music you like yet. It's out there.
Through the decades there’s great music - from the late 1920s onwards, depending on your mood…Classical and opera before all of them, some of which can have you breaking your heart with emotion…
Teddy Pendergrass has the voice of a lion 🦁 because it roars ❤❤❤
Wow! This is a masterpiece, the intro speaks volume. When he enters, his passion and intent is felt from the first syllable. Thank you Teddy P.
I've seen lists of the greatest singers ever, and Teddy was not even on the list!? The hell?! Top five, for sure!
Beyond gorgeous! Teddy Pendergrass has a magnificent voice !
Teddy sings like he means every single word he's saying
Fabulous voice the original. The emotion is THERE.
The best version EVER
The most underrated band ever
The most underrated band ever
Underrated?? Get real.
It has always been my favourite song of all time. Gave me tingles as a teenager in the 70s and still does now I am in my 60s. Love TP's voice so much ❤❤❤ but the arrangement is perfection 👌
Teddy Pendergrass was indeed magnificent.
We know the versions by Thelma Houston and The Communards but this should have been big too.
just to say-this is NOT a 'versio'n' this is the original, the best- don't let, others feed off the original genius, HAROLD MELVIN and the great blue notes
While I certainly agree this is the best, as soon as multiple people perform it, the word version becomes valid. In this case "original version" Or, as I agree, the BEST version.
Semantics, yes. But just a point.
@@shawnengelman970 Well it is the original version that is certain. It is a fact. The Thelma Houston version was a bigger hit in the UK and is better known there. Great too. And then it became a gay classic. The Communards version played off the soul music fans in the gay community.
So what do we have. a great song and a whole lot of love
Teddy Pendergrass & The Bluenotes!
Just hearing Teddy's version in 2025 😮
The soul put in this song cannot be denied.
Communards 6 million views. Harold and the boys on 130,000. Almost as heartbreaking as Teddy's vocals.
To top it all the Communards are the ones shown on Google when searching for the song as if it's theirs. 😒
I am flabbergasted by it. Teddy's voice blows the rest away!
No comparison Teddy is in a league of his own 💙
The People who Thump's down this GREAT CLASSIC DISO SONG Need their DAMN HEADS EXAMINED PERIOD!!!!!
This melodie is on another level"

One of the best songs I've ever heard in my life absolutely love it.
Great song to fight your way through a house full of disco vampires to.
Never be another Teddy !!!!
THE BEST VERSION AND THE BEST VOICE
04.01.2025. As we begin a new year, my interpretation of this masterpiece is myself telling my other self that we have to improve and get better in the new year if we have to survive. It's begging it to not leave it the same. It's seeking growth, progress, elevation!!!
No one...NO ONE has ever been able to cover this with the same FIRE as it was originally sang by Teddy Pendergrast.
That's cuz teddy p soaked em and made em drop.
@@steveb931 true dat.
Wow, wow, wow. This is phenomenal, that voice is pure velvet. Being a baby when this was released means that I was familiar with the Communards version. I always loved the song, I knew it was a cover and just decided to look up the original. This is pure heaven in audio form, it moves me on a visceral level. The voice, the bass, the keyboard, the strings - all pure perfection. I'm going back for a 4th listen!
Rest in Peace, Teddy. Your voice was a one-off. God bless you and those you loved. It is sad that we will never hear you live again.
I was young even at heart but this melody takes me aback when man was a man, a friend was a friend...truly uncontrollably I'm still thrilled and inspired by the raw talent, skills and passiontide in old school music, I can't stop listening, dancing exhausted.
Teddy got it going on.
The moment I hear Teddy's voice, I break out in goosebumps....he is truly missed.
The most underrated band ever
The best version EVER
Lord reminds me so much of my family functions what a era we lived in happiness and joy at its finest miss my family and what’s life without good music and love . Peace to all
this is most excellent, well done,
In my opinion the only version that matters
Norman Harris is the arranger.
This was a very powerful song back in the days ❤Teddy and his Blue 🔵 Notes where honestly on top of the world hit after hit after hit they were literally the biggest band way way back in the good old days ..todays music just isn't as appealing 😢as it was back then
I remember buying Thelma Houston's version and my sister bought this version, today i think this version wins because of the incredible teddy pendergrass , a magical era so many brilliant bands and singers down to earth people who worked so hard
I too first bought Ms Thelma’s record and decades, decades later a friend casually told me (since I was lip syncing to Thelma), there’s a better version of this song. Then he played Teddy P. mind blown 🤯
The most underrated band ever
