This is roughly the bass lesson that I teach our students in school about using octaves. It is aimed at absolute beginners and keeps things VERY simple and straight forward.

You're a great teacher! You mention that using root and octave will always work but using root and 5th doesn't always work. Can you please explain easily when it doesn't work?
Great question. Very often the root chord is followed by the 5th and you have played your 5th already (following your root in the bass line) so it sounds in effect like you have moved too early. Also it does wokr for some songs but if you do it too much, all the bass lines / songs sound the same.

Hello Rachel! I found your bass ukulele lessons a few months ago and they have been wonderful in helping me learn to play the bass uke! As a retired music/piano teacher, although I understand all the musical concepts of your lessons, I am happy to be learning on a new instrument! Thank you so much for these brilliant lessons and play alongs. I do have one question: after decades of playing the piano/keyboard with curved fingers, I am finding that the fingers of my left hand want to stay curved above the fretboard. Sometimes the fingers will be too high above the strings! Any suggestions to help me flatten my fingers? I do try to keep my thumb in the middle of the back of the neck! Best wishes from Down Under (with Welsh great great grandparents!!)
Hi Jenifer, so glad to be helping and awesome to hear you are a retired music teacher. TBH fingers tips should be pressing down firmly and as long as that is happening I wouldn’t be too concerned how arched your fingers are. If I’m playing double bass or cello my fingers tend to be more arched. If you are hovering your fingers above the string, try and keep them as close to the string as you dare. Hope that helps.

Brilliant lesson - very logical, fantastic! Suspect it will take a long time for me to get any speed though! You make the reach to 4th finger look easy! I think my hands are less flexible! 😂
Hi Kathleen, glad to hear you are enjoying. Take your time and don't put yourself under too much pressure. You hands and muscle memory will improve in time and remember, I've played double bass for a long time so my little hands are very used to stretching! LOL
This lesson is really a capstone moment and your teaching skills are very motivational. I have been practicing the major scales to memorize finger placement muscle memory & enforcing technique within the fretboard. With this lesson and with the great collection of backing tracks at the #Ukulaliens I have been able to begin to #playalong with the #KalaUBass #UBass. ( I am using the beginners videos) It’s really really fun. Great Information.
I have been watching many bass players on UA-cam just to see different styles and approaches. So many different styles and loads of techniques. Something I’ve been wondering about is muting the strings. I know this is early (for me) to think about adding muting but, have you made any lessons that teach muting techniques? I have watched a nice muting lesson with #studybass by Andrew Pouska Thank you again for your fantastic #UA-camSchool. It has been a pandemic lifesaver during 2020 for us here in the US. Hi!! Nice video! I have some question. Can I use bass amp for normal Eq ukulele? I heard that bass amp can not sound a high pitched sound. Can I just set my ukulele's Pick up to bass and use bass amp? Thank you
Hi, for normal ukulele you can use a bass amp and it will sound fine, it will sound all the high pitch notes. Personally I wouldn't use something like a PG-3 Mini as they are so small and very little power.

I noticed when you are adding the octave or 5th, you use your pinky but also your fourth finger. I’m guessing it’s for strengthening the note?
Hi Ann, yes. I find the 4th finger gives a much better strength when pressing down you pinky finger. 👍
Can I use electric guitar amp? Like PG-3 mini amp.
I would NOT use a mini amp with a bass uke, only a bass amp.
Is there a reason that you jump across from the octave string to the 5th string with pinkie, rather than holding a still shape of ring finger on 5th string and pinkie on the octave string? Thanks
Great question Angela. It is possible to do it the way you describe but I like to put my ring finger down with my pinky to give more strength on the fretboard. I do tend to teach it this way but it really is what works for everyone 👍

Yes, whenever you press your 5th finger down, try and also press your other fingers down for strength. Hope that helps.
Why don’t we use the pointer and third rather than the pointer and pinky? Or the second finger and pinky? Thank you.
Excellent question, if you want to use your index and ring finger you can. The reason I play like this is because with double bass and bass guitar the scale or length of the fingerboard is much longer and therefore the stretch between notes is further. I do mention this in one of the earlier lessons, if you are comfortable using other fingers that is absolutely fine. The main things is to try and keep your hand in the same shape (whichever fingers you use.)
