My 2001 Dodge Ram 2500/ 24v Cummins / 5-speed manual transmission.
I found out why my truck wouldn't start! After checking the starter first I found the actual problem!
Check out my first video of this project truck!

Thank you. I was in the middle of butt Egypt. Coyotes were howling and cows were moo’n. Truck wouldn’t start and I barely had reception. Watched your video and boom the truck started. Didn’t get eaten up by coyotes nor I got stomped by cows. Thank you
Glad I could help ya!
Was having the exact same problem. EXACT same problem. And the truck would start if you touched the battery with that wire. Bought a new fuse box. didn't need it. Check the 20 amp starter solenoid fuse. Not the starter relay. But the 20 amp starter solenoid fuse. Truck starts great now. this was still very helpful. Thank you.
same thing, 20 amp fuse was blown
Which fuse is this I can’t find it ?? Mine is on a 98 dodge 12 valve
JUST USED THIS 20 MINUTES AGO!!! Thank you!
Life saver man. Truck was dead this morning. Gave this a try and it fired right up. Will say my plug was oriented backwards so it was the other end that worked, not the flat blade end. Have to push it down to get a connection with the other end but it will work. Whichever side follows the power to the starter is the side you want to connect to the hot.
Still working lol mine did this last night at sonic after getting my food saw this video just tried it cause fuck taking the starter off and it fired right up so glad you posted this
Update got mine fixed last night with the help of my dad found out it was the 40amp starter fuse was blown even tho it didn’t look blown from the top
@@tristan2120 how did you figure it was blow
Thank you, 1000X thank you.my wife's truck had this exact same issue and after watching just 2mins of your video I had her truck up and running. Got the wire fixed and I don't have to sleep on the couch. Your the man!!!
Awesome! Glad to hear it helped. Have a great New Year!
How did you fix the wire? I have the same problem.
I found a guy with the same issue and I help a guy at the gas station he was waiting for the wrecker-guy I felt sorry for wg
@@Daniel_P5585 hi ,have you found the problem ,can you start with the key now??
Thank you so much my dude!!! Turns out my problem was that my truck wouldn't go into park so it was in reverse when i shut it off. When i did this it started rolling! Scary stuff
This morning i watched ur video. Did what you showed to do. It worked . So I drove in to town bought a nice push button switch and a roll of 14gadge wire. A blue butt terminal. Mounted push button where the cigarette lighter was. It looks factory . im happy with it.
Thanks a lot! Got my truck started, went & changed the starter solenoid relay and that fixed it!
Thank you, Sir ! So much for your video. im in
the process of trying to fix this problem i had
all ready changed the starter , and starter relay
and nothing would crank and click but not
turn on. Very very frustrated. Going back and
and chacking again and again. Tried what you
showed in your video and started right up no
problems. So now just have to figure out how to
get it to work properly with the key . Thank you
once again.
Thanx for this video man I was about to scrap my truck almost gave up on it
Thank you for making this awesome video it saved my ass as well . I just hooked up a Push Button Starter Switch as well and it fixed the situation I was in .
Nice. I did the same thing (didn't work)and realized my solenoid contacts were extremely f'd up. That's the next step if that didn't work for you.
Did this on my truck and works great! Need to check fuses now.
Another thing to check out is the fuse box in the engine bay (behind the drivers side battery). There are MULTIPLE fuses related to the ignition/starter. Check those as well.
Thanks a lot ,I have a 99 4x4 5 speed 346000 and all the fuses and relays were ok finally i check the starter and had no contact on the ignition wire i replace it with a new one and works perfectly fine thanks for taking the time and upload this video 👍
dude you just saved my ass big time thank you so much for this video!! 🤙🏼
Bro you’re the man! This video helped me out, thanks
Update*
Harness came off ignition switch.. i plugged it in and it cranked right up. Yeah i started shotgunning parts at it but wth. My advice is to start at the ignition switch

I encountered the same problem on a 2000 and it was the 20A fuse that was actually labeled SPARE on the lid of the PDC. Found that is fuse that feeds power to the Pin 30 on the starter relay. Don't trust the lid, do your own testing otherwise you may be spinning your head. I used a schematic for the starting system which helped pinpoint the exact fuse.
YES YES YES YES YES YES, FINALLY! (srry for shouting) :) the fuse you mentioned made me look again at my fuse box (after multiple hours of tracing trouble on and off for six months now). I found already checked all the obvious connections, including doing this solenoid-direct-to-battery test (which did activate the starter, btw), so I was afraid I'd need to start finding wires and doing continuity tests--suspecting a ground. The 20A fuse you described as "Spare" in your scenario was actually a 20A fuse labeled "Starter Sol." on mine. SO OBVIOUS BUT I NEVER SPOTTED IT BEFORE. UGH. Anyway, I pulled that fuse--it was burnt. Needless to say, replacing it immediately fixed the issue and she started right up. Blessings, my friend! :)
Thanks for the video man! Just worked on mine too. I owe ya a beer!
I was completely baffled!!
Truck was running flawless like a sewing machine, I parked it. Next morning "NO CRANK-NO START.. NOT A DAMM THING!!"!! I checked the batteries, terminals, voltage checks, while turning key, clutch position sensor, swapped the trailer and ignition relay, chased wires and fuses... Thank you, I was looking for the 12v trigger wire.. to try it as a last resort before removing the starter.
twin raucous from the cummins forums and threads on line it seems many people have this problem. They change the starter, ign switch, starter relay fuse, starter relay, and still doesn't fix it.
Forgot to mention [Subscribed] Thank you again!!
Update: LarryB's Starter solenoid Heavy Duty Rebuild kit for Dodge Cummins Denso is in the works. Took it off.. the contacts were worn down.. I mean way down, amazed that it was still firing.
2019, 19 Aug... 2000 Dodge 3500 24V spent hours chasing all the relays.... then saw brown cable trick and then the 20 amp fuse for the solenoid started right up.... thanks a millions bucks
So if you jump that wire to power in your starter doesn't turn or do anything that would mean it's a bad starter right?
On my way to give this a shot 😂
We're gonna try it now! Thank you!
Dan I want to know what your fix was in the end. Not a temporary switch, but what was the real problem and how was it corrected. I just spent 3 bills putting on a new starter and having the same problem again, so obviously not the starter
This saved me today boss, thanks!
I had this issue in an 03 3500 after a radiator install, turned out i accidentally unplugged a few of the wiring harnesses under the fuse box when i removed and installed the intercooler pipes. Hooked the harnesses and it now runs great and starts with the key.
Thanks man, I am having the same problem right now!
Hey guys I had the same problem. I replaced the starter relay , no change. I replaced the contacts in my starter, no change. It ended up being the 20 amp starter solenoid fuse in the fuse box was blown.
2002 Dodge Cummins will start with no trouble 50% of the time, the other times it just clicks. It’s a roll of the dice. Fuses look good. ?
Hello, I have one with the same problem. I used the same thing as you and I would like to know if you found the problem. Thank you. Have a good day.
what was the actual cause of not getting juice to the solenoid. could have been in the ignition switch itself.
Life saver
Thank you thank you Thank you all you guys... spent most of the morning trying to find out why my 2000 , 3500, 4wd would NOT start, no click click click batteries were about 12.7 volts head lights were bright.??????? must have checked the voltage 10 times during more charging..I did have the P!^(# code showing........ . bout ready to call the tow truck... looked here and reviewed the 20 amp starter fuse issues. went out looked at the fuse box lid found the fuse .... and it was blown... why?? don't know ..... replaced the fuse ... truck stated right up. OH and I did have the P1693 code on the odometer used the 5 key clicks and the code went away.... thanks again. Probable saved me a $1000 tow and diagnostics bill
That fuse will go just from old age.
Thanks very much for the help 👍
That's some good info,Thanks.👍
Damn wish I coulda got ya some info. If your ran motor wasn’t blowing it wasn’t the pcm. The ignition run relay goes every so often in my 98 and it doesn’t look blown
Exact same problem on my 3500 2004 :)!!!!!
I’m having the exact same issue. So if I replace the plug or just get rid of it and just connect the wires together that would work?
What wire was the issue and how did you fix it
Get yourself a power probe … life saving tool
This worked for me as well! I got a project truck that was doing the same thing, touch hot wire to the plug and started cranking, anybody ever find out what the root cause was and what they did to fix it or at least rig it up
Thanks
Tried this last night but the plug didn't start it up. What could be wrong..bad starter?
Same problem
So what if you do this and it just throws sparks??
Do you think a 06 5.9 24v would have the same plug
Add me to the list of people helped! Thank you!
so what was the fix? or did you just keep using the push button?
Jeffrey Bright I know id like to know what the actual fox is
I’m
Can we bypass the connection part at the fuse box? Or would I need to install push start
does anyone have an example of a “push button start” i’m having this same issue with my truck
So does that mean you have a bad starter ?
No, it's something in the fusebox. If the starter was bad it probably wouldn't even turn over.
The problem is not the Cummings motor the problem is the shit and garbage wiring that Dodge uses in their cars
So what’s the actual problem then??
Did you ever track down what was wrong in the pdc?
How do by pass that instead of constantly doing that
i had the same exact problem and have hot wired like your video. i cannot figure out how to get the key to work- have you come up with a solution?
check the 20 amp starter solenoid fuse. not the relay.
Hi ,have you fixed it??
How do it off I'm having problems with it
I have the same issue how do I fix this
Mine did that but I dont have dash or cab lights. No dings or nothing. Two new batteries on it
But what if you send Powers straight to that wire and that doesn't start what that mean that it's a bad starter
Sorry I know this is an old comment, but you should check the 20 Amp solenoid fuse before you buy a starter. I hope you already found a fix.
Hello everyone so I have the same problem what this guy has, what I did is open up the fuse box where the wires go to in the fuse box and check for any wire that is corroded that’s gonna be your problem
I have a 12 valve Cummins and it won’t crank, it has new batteries and a new starter but still won’t crank
Hazzurs, have you figured out your issue?
@@patrickwayne3701 yes
@@hazzurs did it turn out to be the ignition switch or the fuse farm/relays?
@@patrickwayne3701 it was the fss
Did you ever find out what happen
My truck has the same issue what actually went wrong
Sam Francavilla my truck does the same thing. Did this guy's exact technique to get home from work tonight. Ignition switch on key cylinder is prob shot. Especially if your truck is high mileage. Mines at 240k and just started not cranking. Thought it was starter at first so changed it. Still didn't crank from time to time. Contacts in my ignition switch are prob just shot
Smor125 I replaced the ignition switch
Sam Francavilla did that fix it?
Smor125 no
Sam Francavilla my next guess would be test continuity from that connector that goes to the fuse box that prob goes to starter relay. Possible connector in fuse box for relay wiggled loose
Mine was a fuse under hood
That's your bypass button wire
It do same thing my truck
I changed the ignition switch
Now it crank normal with the key
You can buy at AutoZone for $65
Part number is greatly appreciated to help other with the same issue.
I thought my truck ignition switch was no good too. Check continuity and resistance from starter signal off ignition switch to fuse box before changing parts
I just did this, I heard a pop and now my truck is completely dead. No dash, lights ETC. Someone help please?
