  • Arroyo, Puerto Rico was one of the towns most affected by Hurricane María back in 2017, and it shows everywhere you look. My wife and I visited this small town in the south coast of Puerto Rico and we found an interesting mix.
Some places are still like the day that the storm hit and others are downright beautiful. But above all the people are nice.
Visiting this southeastern corner of Puerto Rico can be tricky, but if you watch the videos for Las Piedras, Yabucoa, Maunabo, Patillas and Arroyo you can cherry pick the best places in each town and have a great time. Make sure to read the blog posts for each town at www.puertoricobygps.com. They're chock full of information and include the GPS coordinates for each location.

I'm so happy I found this. Thank you for taking the videos and telling what you could about the town. My maiden name is Arroyo, and this is one of the places I'd like to visit some time in the future. Hopefully one day it will be restored.

Thanks so much for this video. My wife and I have spent a few weeks there the last two winters, and really enjoy this town. It is off the beaten path, no tourists, just friendly and welcoming Puerto Ricans. We are the only folks who seem to be native English speakers, and we were able to visit many beautiful places with just a short drive.

Yo vivo en Tampa,Florida y pertenecí a una unidad de la Guardia Nacional de PR ubicada en Arroyo. The 192 Medical Support Battalion. I had brought el house in Guayama at Urbanization Monte Real just on the borderline of Guayama and Arroyo en Carretera #3. Close by was the Nacional Guard unit of Arroyo. I liked it very much but I moved back to the states where I lived most of my life and sold my house. I retired from the military here at Florida. The majority of my military years were spent in Arroyo.

There is alot of events in Arroyo and activities. It seems you only went to small section of the municipality. Theyre are carnivals, kids events, sports, besides the beach theyre is also the surfing park. Events for the elders. Places to eat that are great ect... I live here going on 6 years and is no ghost to us.

Remember, we just spend a day per town. Without help from the city government we can’t guess everything there is. I tourist would probably feel the same way.

Hey Lori , I have been thinking of retiring to PR. I seen a few houses in Arroyo, is Arroyo someplace you would recommend. Safe, sense of community, nice beach, healthcare, and drivable to other areas in PR?

This is the first of your videos that made me feel sad. It's sad seeing a town in that kind of shape. I have an uncle (by marriage) that's from Arroyo.

Sorry for the sentiment. It has never been my objective to make people sad. Appalled? Yes. Angry? Maybe. But mostly aware.

This was 5 months ago in what year. Yes, Arroyo like many other towns in Puerto Rico became worst after Maria. Many of them are usually devastated by bad weather. But let me clarify for you, many towns were in bad condition before Maria. Before they were beautiful Places. Most of them had small store fronts around the Town Plaza and there was plenty of life back then. But I will tell you something many may not know. When private Developers assisted by our politicians, began to build Huge Mall Developments of private entity, the town were left abandoned because the small business owners could not compete with these big developments. Nevertheless, there are still many beautiful places to discover. For one, I recently visited Arroyo and I found it reappealing. I know because I am a native of Arroyo.
I see how it is revitalizing. If only Politicians would have use that 1% of taxes collected, that was suppose to be used to Vitalize and renovate the towns, it would be a different story. Show me a politician that has left office being less wealthy than when they enter an Official Government post. They are the ones who manage the economy so who is really to blame. Sad but true, as far as I am concerned. But there is still room for change. God Help us all.

Just so you know, our UA-cam video, and its accompanying blog post, were both published in November, 2023. Furthermore, every single word that I wrote is true. For better or for worse, I tell it like it is.
I have very little to add to your comments. You said it all so well. However, don’t forget that I make these videos for my entire audience, which isn’t too large to begin with. If I were to be as blunt as you I would be left with half of them.
