  • I finally got around to picking a bike to put that single speed tensioner that BangGood sent me. Not without messing around with snow on the ground a bunch and starting to clean up Brent's bike first. Also, Norton and I close a big business deal near the end.

    i'm kind of jealous of your city clearing the bike pathes.
    where i live, when the city clears the streets of snow, they even dump it on the bike lanes....as well as home owners, when they clear the sidewalk infront of their houses of snow. cycling in the winter - at least when it's snowing - sucks ass here.
    greetings from germany btw :-)
    love your vids

      its usually pretty garbage snow removal here as well! somehow the city got lucky with the lack of snow fall haha. Wait until march here and you'll see its pretty similar to the conditions you are riding in there!
      I want to go to Germany real bad!
      Thanks!

    Hi. I'm huge fan of simplicity and, all of my bikes era single-speed (two mtb, one SS/fixie - road). My question is: You recommend oval chainring for single-speed?

    Cool vid as usual. I personally enjoy the hassle of figuring out the perfect chain length in order to avoid using a tensioner. I got too much time on my hands hahaha. ☮️ from NYC.

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  6 років тому

      I actually plan on doing the exact same thing now, this tensioner is bleh, not having one would be so cool.
      RT posted up a link to a page that calculates ratios and chain lengths that will create the proper chain length. I think a 15t and one less link will yield a non tensioner needed gear.

    Would the Raleigh Willard 2 be able to go down some stairs, cuz I'm going to get that bike but I want to make sure that it can go downstairs and handle things of that nature, plus I weigh 300 pounds I know that's a lot but I was 360 and I do a lot of rollerblading like I've skated over thousand miles in a couple months that's what help me lose my 60lb but I really want to get into bike riding too and I really like the Raleigh Willard 2 it looks like an awesome bike and it's a gravel bike

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  6 років тому +1

      You can definitely ride that bike down stairs, but your weight might be a little bit hard on it. My biggest concern would be wheels. If you can budget for getting something built wheel wise that will be tougher, you’ll be all set!

    Anyone know what those spacers are called where the cassette was? The R18 and L16

    • @MrMCTario
      @MrMCTario 4 роки тому

      I'd search for a "single speed kit" DMR used to make one. They cost a fair bit though. It's cheaper to stack old cassette spacers and line up the chain straight from one cog to the next.

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  4 роки тому

      Getting single spacers can be a hassle too though.

      I love everything ProleteR has put out! its too bad such a fair amount of t samples stuff i probably count use. The mug is two sided! it has the logo and the "Ride Reasonably Priced Bikes" on the other side (to make fun of the "life's too short to ride shit bikes" saying). But thats why I'm asking you guys what ya's think!

  • @kevsbikelife5245
    @kevsbikelife5245 6 років тому +2

    Hi dude! It's such a refreshing change to see someone in the cycling industry publicly denounce the requirement of expensive kit and high end bikes! I mean yeah they'd be nice to have... but for the average rider a top end bike isn't going to really ride much differently to an entry level bike! Keep it real

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  6 років тому +1

      Totally! I guess I just want new bike riders to know that the equipment comes second. Riding the bike/enjoying it is first. It's too bad it'll never be desirable for companies to want to support or sponsor a video haha
      (i still want baller gear to a certain degree though haha)

    • @kevsbikelife5245
      @kevsbikelife5245 6 років тому

      Spindatt yeah! Who doesnt want Gucci bike gear! What really 'grinds my gears' is bike snobbery with guys with all the gear telling people they need This or don't buy that because the quality is crap.
      I work in a big bike retailer in the UK and alot of my customers come in quoting this and I tell them that the tool has to match the job, if you're a casual cyclist, or a hobbyist you don't need a race spec bike, and actually it's not going to do what you need it to.
      Just get out and ride on what you've got, enjoy it and get what you need when you need it!

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 6 років тому

      You just dont ‘need’ all that high tech overpriced stuff. Buy simple, quality and locally produced hardware. I have 6 bikes I ride ,2 are custom built frames. All are built part by part, specced by me. None are newer than 12 years old. My fixed gear monster Miyata is my go to bike I use the most. The frame was free! Its simple, fun and one hell of a workout! Too much fun to be legal!!

      Yep, 3/32 single speed setup!

  • @MisterDoloto
    @MisterDoloto 6 років тому +1

    Yo, just use a tensioner with 2 pulleys design: the first one wraps a chain around a cog to prevent chain slipping, the latter one - tensions a chain. Works flawlessly on my mtb, no chain slipping on a cog whatsoever. My gear ratio 32:16. Cheap stamped ss cassette cog, generic chinese narrow wide chainring.

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  6 років тому +1

      That sounds like a derailleur to me! Haha
      I’d try all sorts of different setups, but am super interested in trying to find a gear that gives decent tension without the use of a tensioner at all. Ultimate RT posted up a link to a website that helps calculate some options, so I’m definitely going to be tinkering away with that!

    • @MisterDoloto
      @MisterDoloto 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, this may work as well. But with 2 pulley design you don't have to worry about shortening/lengthening your chain if you want to play with different cog teeth numbers. I agree - it looks almost like a derailleur, but then again - why not using horizontal dropouts? Magic gear may not work properly entire chain life due to chain stretch. Anyway, good luck.

    Ah, the dreadful chain tensioner, best to just try and find a "unicorn gear". At least it didn't skip on you and the snow made it silent, I'd try to shorten the chain even more if possible and get a shimano dx sprocket, makes life more pleasant.

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  6 років тому

      i ended up having to add a link. it would be cool to find that gearing that allows for no tensioner! that would be rad.

    • @UltimateRT
      @UltimateRT 6 років тому

      Try this link eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php
      it estimated about 1.5-2mm off for me with the loosest recommended combo, so my tension is a little on the slack side after riding with a half link chain for 2 weeks, but the shimano dx sprocket keeps the chain on perfectly well even when fooling around on single track. Also you might have multiple gear combinations that you can run with a single chainring, I have 2 for 39t and 3 for 34t.

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  6 років тому

      That chart is sweet! looks like if i throw a 15t on there i could ditch the tensioner...
      I can't help but wonder if there are any smaller 110bcd chainrings i could get for this bike.
