  • A Spiritual Pilgrimage | The Monk Life
Dhutanga is an ancient pilgrimage that monks have walked on for centuries. This practice is another form of training for the monks. It reminds us of living simply, detachment, impermanence, and meditation. This journey for me is symbolic of life in general. The road of life is long. It comes with many difficulties such as aches and pain, illnesses, exhaustion, ups and down, etc, and on this long journey, it's important to practice one's mind to be still and calm. Through all the turbulances, we'll come across many different people on this road to support us. We'll encounter many friends who will walk along this path with us. But one thing that is key is that no matter what comes our way, just KEEP ON WALKING. Keep focus and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. #monk #monks #pilgrimage

This is so lovely. The reverence of the townspeople for the monks is incredibly touching. Thank you for these beautiful glimpses into the life of a monk; though we can’t all live a monk’s life, we can all integrate the practice of gratitude, patience, and simplicity into our lives.

Peaceful video and triggers my nostalgia. I taught English in Lopburi. I used to go out on my motorcycle, pick a direction and drive. That would inevitably lead me to small towns like this and to temples which I loved sitting around. The townspeople and monks were lovely. The kids acted like I was a celebrity, “Farang! Farang!” (Foreigner/French) it was a unique experience.

The footage of the kids was my favorite....so sweet. I think you got double the workout, going ahead to get the shots! I also liked the stray dogs following you around. One of them at the beginning looked like one that visits where you stay at the retreat center (I feel like I've seen him/her in other videos). Thank you for this Nick!

@@NickKeomahavongOfficial I feel more and more persuaded of the importance of bringing the insights and teachings of the Buddha to “the West,” and it seems to me that you are breaking very important new ground in that effort. Three things stand out for me. First, your skillfulness in using video (editing, sound engineering, etc.) in creative ways to spark interest without indulging the craving for entertainment or distraction. Second, your willingness to speak about your experience as an immigrant, at a time when this is such an enormously important part of so many people's experience, and such an important issue for "the West" - and yet a kind of experience that is so frequently misrepresented or abused towards socially and politically violent ends. Third, your willingness to be so emotionally open and vulnerable on camera, allowing people to see how deeply being alive affects you, while still embodying compassion and non-attachment - a kind of presence that I think can help many people understand that being a “monk” doesn’t mean being cold or stoical :-) Your lived example is an inspiration. Thank you, my new friend and teacher. Greetings from New York City.

(7:52) These mothers with their little children--so beautiful. Religious instruction should begin at a young age. Proverbs 22:6 "Educate a child according to his way, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." In general, I find the piety of the villagers almost as inspiring as the composed, mindful silence of the monks and novices. Thank you, Venerable Nick, for another window into a beautiful world.

Beautifully shot and edited. As a technical aside, I would check your camera sensor and lenses for dust, there are some dust shadows in clear shots, on the middle left of the picture.

My takeaway is that we are never alone. Even if we are momentarily passing, in that short amount of time we will meet people, create bonds and relationships. Those bonds, relationships and experiences will become our fuel to keep going and moving forward.

Hi Nick, good to see Monks life. Here just curiosity to know that Monks are going to village and people's are giving food, my question here is, already people's knew that Monks used to come via this way(street) like this OR Monks used to divided into groups and going for each way(street) OR Monks used to go village in scheduled manner...if you feel my question is valid, plz answer. Thanks.

Thank you very much for making the effort to place all of these video online

Nick, beautiful video as always. Please tell us how you are able to take these footage of day to day monk life. Who is the camera man? Who edits the videos and is this accepted by the community you live with?

I also love this vdo, it’s so peaceful.
As I knew from Ven.Nick’s previous video, Ven. Nick is the person who do both shooting and editing the vdo. And i think , yes, this is accepted by the community :)
