When selected as the Friday night fixture by broadcasters, it was expected this would be a real relegation six-pointer, yet there’ll only be pressure in the Luton dressing room now after Everton secured their 71st successive top-flight campaign last weekend. The home side sit one point from safety and in torrid form with only one win from their past 15 matches, however two wins already against Everton this season - both 2-1 at Goodison Park - should inspire some hope.
The Hatters have picked up more points at home (15) than on the road (10), yet their form at Kenilworth Road against rivals around them has been a huge disappointment. They’re yet to beat any side currently in the bottom-six at home, despite scoring in all four of those matches (D1, L3). That’s put their leaky defence under the spotlight - you’d have to go back 20 matches to their last clean sheet which came against third-tier Bolton in the FA Cup (0-0).
Just two weeks ago, Everton were just two points above Luton in the drop zone, yet three standout home wins in the space of six days - including a 2-0 success over rivals Liverpool - propelled Sean Dyche’s men to safety with three rounds to go. Given they were deducted eight points earlier in the campaign for two separate PSR breaches, that represents a momentous achievement for the Toffees, who’ll now aim to secure four straight league wins with clean sheets for the second time this season.
While Everton have actually won four of their past five matches with shutouts, the one exception was a sizable one - the only away trip in the streak which ended in a 6-0 loss at Chelsea! That extended Everton’s record to no Premier League away win in their last nine (D3 L6), which marks their longest such run under Dyche.
Players to watch: Carlton Morris, who has scored two of Luton’s last four league goals, also netted the winner when these two sides last met in the league. Including two in his last three matches, Idrissa Gana Gueye has scored three Premier League goals for Everton this season, as many as in his first five campaigns in the competition combined.
Hot stat: Since the start of their winless league run in February, no side has won fewer games in England’s top four tiers than Luton.
