Sevilla’s disappointing season was epitomised by last round’s dramatic 3-2 loss away to Villarreal where they relinquished the lead twice. A period of 13 points in five games prior had them on their way to returning to the top half which would be an improvement on last season’s 11th-place finish, and there remains an aura of much-needed stability at the club following weekend reports that the board was preparing to offer interim head coach Quique Sánchez Flores a contract for next season.
Quique insists he won’t be thinking about his future until the end of the season, and he will want to help the team finish the season strong despite being assured of nothing more than a mid-table finish. Their home fans would have enjoyed seeing the team grind out four victories from their last five league games in Seville, but the one exception - a 2-1 loss to Celta Vigo - is a reminder they cannot take lowly Cádiz for granted.
Cádiz were hurt even more by Sevilla’s loss to Celta Vigo, meaning they started this round five points and a significant goal difference away from safety despite keeping their survival hopes alive with a 1-0 home victory over Getafe. But having not yet recorded consecutive league wins throughout the season, the likelihood of collecting the points they need to challenge Celta appears remote.
Especially as they’ll likely need to secure both their first and second away wins of their La Liga campaign to have any chance of avoiding the drop. Their current away record makes bleak reading (D6, L11), with heavy losses making up their two most recent trips (Real Madrid 3-0, Girona 4-1). Defeats earlier in the season to the two clubs closest to Sevilla at the start of this round, Osasuna (2-0) and Alavés (1-0), suggest the margin may be smaller but that would be of no consolation if Cádiz have their relegation confirmed by the end of the day.
Players to watch: Lucas Ocampos assisted one of Sevilla’s three goals in their last home outing and will hope to get himself on the scoresheet as he did in the reverse H2H. Cádiz’s top scorer for this season, Chris Ramos, opened the scoring that day but is still yet to find the back of the net in 2024.
Hot streak: Cádiz were scoreless in six of their last seven La Liga losses.
