San Diego Bay provides a variety of fishing opportunities for kayak anglers. In this video I venture out into the back bay of San Diego Bay looking to rack up some numbers on Spotted Bay Bass and to talk about the exciting opportunities that San Diego offers to the kayak angler. Its a great place for beginners or experienced kayak anglers looking for a little sunshine during the winter months.
Be sure and plan your trip around the appropriate tides and weather and be aware of boat traffic.

It’s always nice fishing in San Diego Bay. Great video 😊
Love watching your saltwater fishing! The diversity of fishing, especially kayak fishing, that you share with us, is astounding! Thank you!
Still enjoying ice fishing and haven't thought about taking the yak out yet. Thanks for sharing
Spent lots of time in San Diego. Lived 3 hours from there in yuma az.
Just watch out for those wave runners! 😂 you had a close call last time!
My Salty loves the salty Chesapeake Bay of Virginia!
Looks like a great time. I'd love to try blade baits out there. I bet you could catch halibut and those bass on them.
Been thinking about first salt water trip with my PDL. This seems like a good idea- I like idea of not open ocean to start with.
Cool stuff! 😀
You should try fishing Shaver Lake CA someday for kokane. Also it’s home to many trophy trout.
I will be kayak fishing, for the first time, Mission Bay and San Diego Bay on Fri and Sat (March 3/4)! Thanks for the tips. Launch spot recommendations?
I found Mission Bay to be fairly slow this time of year. For fishing the back bay I liked Chula Vista Boat Ramp. Shelter Island is a good spot if you want to fish around the marinas or head out to Zuniga Jetty which I highly recommend if you are comfortable with the distance. Can you eat those spotted sand bass? They look like they would be a nice alternative to catching large crappie. Little corn meal + some avocado oil + Tony Chicheres Cajun seasoning = nice fish fry.
They need to be 14" at least to harvest. Most don't as they take almost 10 years to get to that size. They also don't taste the best.
@@johnathanrice5469 thanks, good to know
Hey Tyler, great video. If you don't mind what did you use for holding the flag on the back?
It’s mounted using Navarre modified kayak handles and a t-bolt base
Where is your Ember Salty? We will be in SD end of March. I’d have nose hooked that smelt and used him as bait for bonito.
Didn't bring it on this trip.
I know you have talked before about how there isn't much choice for anglers using kayaks in the PNW. I'm in Virginia, would you still recommend the salty 120 over the sportsman 120 or 106 for those of us on the east coast?
Absolutely love your videos! Seen tons of them I have a question for you. I’m 50. 250 with back issues. Is there a place where I can’t rent a pdl kayak for a day to see if my back can handle it? I’m in the Spokane area but willing to travel to try one out. Thank you ahead of time for the reply
Worth a shot so I’m going to try. I know you have two kayaks. Any chance I can drive to your area and fish with you? I’m also a veteran if that helps your decision :)
Robert, I am down in Walla Walla but can travel or meet you someplace and you can try. I have both a Sportsman PDL and a Hobie outback. Different kind of movement on the legs and knees in each. If you have gear for cold weather/water we can try to set something up or wait until spring/summer warmer water.
Wow. Thanks. That’s nice of you. I Definately would like to try out the pdl drive. I can drive to you whenever you can put us on some fish. I have tons of gear for any type of fishing. I don’t have no kayak gear though so probably just wait a month or so till it gets a little warmer. Once again thanks.
I just went ahead and bought one. Pdl 120! Thank you for the offer to use yours though. Very nice of you
@@robertmagnuson4108 Great, did you get a Salty or Sportsman?
Do they have kayaks for rent there? Also does the salt water destroy your reels? I've never fished salt water so just curious.
Rinse everything with copious amounts of freshwater and won’t have problems.
How do you care for your reels after salt water fishing?
A light rinse in freshwater is all I do.
Tyler you made a comment about a blog post but I do not know where to look for it. I went to your blog but it only has a few things on it and nothing about San Diego
Yes the auto publisher on my blog site didn’t work. I will get it fixed this next weekend when I get home from vacation
@@spiltmilt Thanks will wait for it. Keep the videos coming.
@@spiltmilt Tyler, 2 questions, how do you secure your kayaks when stopping at hotels and such on your trips (locks, chains, cables? And what rod are you using (length and action). Thanks
Where did you launch from
Chula Vista
Where did you get those pedals?
