- The first installment in GitHub’s “Coding Accessibility” video series features Becky Tyler, a bright, funny, and incredibly tenacious young woman with quadriplegic cerebral palsy who interacts with her computer exclusively by using her eyes. Becky started off simply wanting to play Minecraft, but the shortcomings of available accessibility tech led her down a path beyond mining ore and into the world of open source software and collaboration. She now attends the University of Dundee, where she studies applied computing.

I don't understand how these people can get jobs in coding while me with no disability can't??? lol
@@Danuxsy Because the disability doesn't play a role maybe? I have a job as a developer because I'm good at my job, disability or no disability. If you're good at what you do, and you can do that job, you have a good chance of getting hired. It's a field where physical disabilities matter less than other jobs.

I cried watching this. So amazing what can be achieved with open source software and the people willing to help others who don't have the same opportunities to enjoy the things we take for granted.

I was honoured to have graduated Applied Computing at Dundee, and was taught by Annalu while she was the Head of Computing. I will forever be grateful of the foundations she taught me in accessibility, it has been something I've taken with me through my professional career. did they actually teach you what cache lines were and how to avoid cpu stalls? or did they just indoctrinate you with liberal nonsense that your primary purpose in life is to be subservient to the disabled and that you need to put literally everyone else's needs before your own?
Ended up crying. As a future developer, I'm definitely inspired to do projects related helping people with disabilities. Great video!
As an abled person, I can not even begin to imagine the struggles people like you had to go through. It almost feels like life was unfair to you, but you grabbed it by the neck and made the most of what you could get from it. I sincerely hope there is more technology like this in the future.
This documentary is eye opening, really. Looking at her you may think she's not able to understand reality or maybe she's in her own world, completely detached from us. It turns out that's very far from the truth. Not only she's perfectly "normal". She's also _better_ than most of us, in terms of awareness, intelligence and talent. Bravissima.

I struggle with a similar thing. From the outside, I'm visibly severely disabled which leads people to assume my brain doesn't work or is damaged. But I have a masters in computer science, work for a very well known company. I've had people tell me to ny face, that they don't believe I could actually have done all that on my own, some even said that my caregiver must have cheated and done my exams for me or something or that I must have had my grades boosted ?! I hope that the world becomes more aware that just because someone's physical disability may be severe, it doesn't automatically mean their brain or intellect is affected too. In the tech world, some people can be quite hostile to me, believing that they deserve my job more than me, or that I was only hired as some inclusively policy. Whereas actually I did my interview etc online, the people doing the interview and the people who offered me the job didn't even know I was disabled

This made me tear up in tears of joy, I had to stop the video to get my self together. Sometimes as a multimedia developer and designer I end up doing such superficial jobs, redundant features, redundant UX and UI... BUT THIS RIGHT HERE IS DESIGN, FEATURES TO IMPROVE LIFE, UI AND UX THAT'S USEFUL ! Thank you for your inspirational hard work !

How did you get into the field? I'm learning to code and have cerebral palsy.
As a developer who usually glosses over accessibility (read alt attributes) this is an eye opener. When she said that being a dev made her feel valued and respected, that struck a chord; it warmed my heart. This video right here makes the abstract world of software engineering become a part of the physical human world

Out of all the fields where accessibility may be problematic to achieve, Information Technology is NOT one of those spaces. We are missing out on so much talent by exclusion. I look forward to seeing more in this space in the industry and seeing amazing new developments in the accessibility space and the technology developments created by people like Becky.
I'm so glad content like this exists and disabilities are getting visibility like this. I would rather watch this over 99% of the other stuff I see posted.

This is beautiful. This gives me hope in people. We need more warm in this world. Girl in the video is astonishingly intelligent and talented. She can handle all the software development stuff, test it out and provide an impact to the world. Hardly anobody can do so much as she does. We need to teach our kids to not judge anything at first sight. This is what makes a bareer. Remember, today you are healthy and feel good, but tomorrow something might happen and you might get to know, how it is to live as a paralysed person. Be humble people.

Sometimes it takes differently abled people to give motivation to a depressed soul going through the same that there's life and opportunities for them. Am happy for the Beckys and Prof. Annalu out there❤

I am a disable person in the software engineering field. I don't always trust myself. Thank you for this video. It is really encourageous. 🙏
I've noticed those with disabilities may suffer but many work twice as hard to be as successful as those who are capable. They are relentless because they know they can't do things as well as many others. However, they still go much further than those who are able to do so because they take advantage of their resources to create extraordinary things.
This is truely inspiring and what is even more amazing is how technology can be leveraged to bring everyone together.

Imagine everything they are doing in this video but add in the large language models we have been using as of late, such as ChatGPT. I can't wait to see what the future holds for us and can't wait for the influx of minds that has been locked out of the conversations just because of a lack of interface.

I'm not one of those people who are easily moved, but I burst into tears as soon as I saw how joyfully Becky was performing such complex tasks with these technologies. I'm finishing my 3rd year of studying Systems Analysis and currently working as a DevOps engineer. It took me a long time to decide what I wanted to do in my professional career, but from now on I will pursue my dream of working on projects like EyeMine.
I wish Becky and everyone involved in this documentary the best of luck and wonderful new opportunities. You are amazing!

As a game modder myself, I've had the opportunity to help a few disabled users with alternative input schemes... it's a great feeling when you can open up experiences everyone else takes for granted.

I am physically disabled myself (I have a spinal cord injury) and I can still program using Talon Voice. Although I'm still waiting for copilot X & copilot X voice 😁😁
guy with a spinal injury here who got into coding as a way to deal with my injury. great to see there are others that don't see their injury as a barrier.

I love working on web accessibility. Unfortunately, quality work takes time and companies really hate this and view it as a burdensome cost center. Hope the tide can turn on this mindset. I will try my best to advocate where I can. Great video!

Well, I hope this video changes the minds of the powers that be at your work. It's a 2 way street. It's not just about enabling access for the disabled, it's also about enabling the disabled to share their knowledge, hard work and creativity. I heard a quote that said that disability is an ingenious way to live. As someone with a disability, that rings true. Those of us with disabilities have to become problem solvers and troubleshooters out of necessity. These are qualities that I would think anyone would want from a teammate. Yea, Becky is all that!
