    It's often intriguing to see how a power user views changes to things. Personally, I don't mind that there are so many options for the UI appearance. I do blue collar work, so my PC is for entertainment first and almost never for work, so I like it to look fun and playful after a long day of toiling at work. I'm just happy that linux has advanced beyond basic computing and ventured towards being a real windows competitor. Looking forward to the new update, I have a feeling some of the stability issues I've had may be kernel related and I'm keen to see if I still have as much freezing and crashing with the new version.

      Same here. I use my PC for gaming and movies, with a bit of authoring short books here and there. I only keep Windows around for a handful of triple-A games and use Linux for retro and indie games and movies along with my usual PC stuff.

    Using LM 22 on bare metal it works great. I have been putting it through its paces and haven't had a single issue yet. This computer has Intel Arc graphics and previously I had to either use the Edge version of LM or the regular version I would have to boot to upgrade the Kernel manually. With the 6.8 kernel that is installed I have had no problems.

    I tried it on bare metal twice. I had to go back to 21.3 because the Invidia driver install did not work / made the display unusable. In addition, there are problems with fuse2 and fuse in general that prevent running some appimages. I really hope this is fixed. I love 21.3.

    The big question is, how will Cinnamon Desktop continue to exist when things move further and further away from GTK3? Many many many programs in Cinnamon are built for that. Specifically.

    • @mgord9518
      @mgord9518 22 дні тому +2

      Mint is forking GTK3 to keep it alive. GTK4 (especially libadwaita) is very GNOME-centric and makes pretty much zero effort to make it a good experience on other DEs

    • @Jammet
      @Jammet 15 днів тому

      @@mgord9518 But is that smart? Forcing GTK3 to stay around? Are we sure GTK4 isn't "better"? And even if GTK4 is worse, what if everyone else pushes GTK4, how long do "we" want to keep GTK3 on life support before we have to give up on everything, because we stuck by our guns for years?

    • @mgord9518
      @mgord9518 15 днів тому

      @@Jammet
      1: Is GTK4 better? If not, why should it be adopted if it brings nothing but less customization?
      2: What "everyone" does doesn't really matter. GTK3 apps can easily be themed to fit into a GTK4 environment, the other way around isn't really feasible. As long as GTK3 is actually maintained and secure, there is no good reason to move away from it
      3: It gets replaced when it makes sense. For GTK2, the primary issue was scaling. Do we have an issue of such magnitude with GTK3 that justifies its replacement? Maybe in the future we'll need to target VR or something that is too difficult to adapt GTK3 to, in which case it may justify an upgrade.

    • @Jammet
      @Jammet 15 днів тому

      @@mgord9518 I'm not really concerned with it being better or worse, but with it being mass adopted. It actually does matter what most people pick under certain circumstances, if Linux Mint means to stay on-top of things, is my belief anyway. You're asking all the right questions but the thing is, choices will be made *for* us, not with us, sometimes. I'm just worried here. Worried that at some point in time, there could be regrets about not using GTK4 and working with that, in some way.

    • @mgord9518
      @mgord9518 15 днів тому

      @@Jammet It's certainly not a decision without risks, but I think it's worth it to fight GNOME's influence over the design of the Linux desktop.
      Like I said before, GTK4 is not a general-purpose toolkit like the versions before it. It's completely GNOME-oriented and if desktops want their own personality, they should not adopt it.
      So 2 things can happen.
      Either A: Linux mint is seen as "dated" for this decision and people move away from it
      Or B: It sets a precedent and other DEs will feel safe in relying on GTK3, hopefully quarantining GTK4 to GNOME and friends.

    Some people are saying that Mint looks ugly out of the box, and I can understand them. It looks totally different from modern Windows or macOS.
    However, design the only thing I found questionable (it's also a subjective topic...). Even so, you can customize Cinnamon and make it look whatever you want it to be. Hell, I even made it look like Ubuntu, but with custom icons. Overall, I feel like Mint is THE Linux distro for Windows refugees. Similar design, one of the easiest distros to use + based on Ubuntu, but doesn't have controversial stuff from Canonical (like Snaps).
    For those who want modern design and auto-tiling (like in window managers), I think Pop!_OS is also a solution... once the 24.04 is released with COSMIC DE. It doesn't look like Windows though.

    • @Frozen_Death_Knight
      @Frozen_Death_Knight 22 дні тому +3

      As a long time Windows user who just switched to Linux Mint 3+ weeks ago I think Cinnamon looks fine. Granted, there are more fancy looking desktops out there for Linux, but it is functional and not that hard to adjust to your liking.
      Windows has not had a consistent UI since the Windows XP days and Windows 11 is way too strict in terms of customisation to be usable for me. The fact that it forces the bottom taskbar to stay there makes it absolutely useless for my ultra-widescreen that I use the sides of the screen to attach my software. For certain software I need the taskbar out of the way as to not obstruct the UI, but Windows 11 is not designed for modern screen dimensions by forcing things on to the user. It's for good reason I've stayed on Windows 10.
      Mint may look more 2010s in style, but there is enough customisation that you at least find something you like more or less. If there is a demand to make the GUI more modern then the devs at least seem to be willing to adapt.

Hope your transition went well

      @Frozen_Death_Knight 22 дні тому +3

      @@LinuxLoader1287 Yeah, for the most part. Though it would have been a lot smoother if 22 had already been released, haha.
      The biggest issue I had was with audio production, or audio at all for that matter. My Roland Super UA-S10 audio interface just didn't work whatsoever and I had to manually install Pipewire and Wireplumber for my audio server to make it work, which was hard to find any info about. Ripping out the old system for the one that is going to be shipped in 22 made my audio hardware work flawlessly on Mint, which would have saved me several hours of trying to troubleshoot things.
      At least it works now, which is a lot better than it not working at all. I've had bumps on the road, but most have been manageable. The only real showstopper left is having Affinity/Adobe art and image editor software to work properly on Linux and sadly that is the biggest gap left that I need to fill by dual booting to Windows 10 still.
      I really hope there will be a viable solution soon. :)

    Security is an often brought up point, and I'm slowly realizing the Linux community is maybe a little paranoid. I recognize that malicious software exists for all OS, but as someone who's very much in the loop is there a genuine high risk for malicious code from the software managers? It seems like the constant checks and balances from people like you and other software developers minimizes the risk tremendously.

      @@Frozen_Death_KnightI do get it, but at what point is it enough? If a bad actor wants in, short of never connecting to the Internet it's not stoppable. Linux doesn't have very good antivirus to begin with, and since everything is mostly open source assuming you get it from the source where does the unnecessary risk start?

    openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE Plasma 6.1.2 is by far better - change my mind (I also used Mint, but then I grew up)
    edit: I admit, Mint has cool (pun intended) wallpapers but thats it really.

      "...but then I grew up"
      Bruh.
      Coming from an Arch guy who doesn't go around flexing it or talking down to people for not using it, get over yourself. Whether we run a more obscure or "complicated" (in terms of setup/maintenance) distro or not doesn't make us special.
      Mint is one of the most sensible distros out there with plenty of legitimate use cases where you'd want or need a "just works" system that requires basically no intervention ever and has virtually no risk of breaking with updates, however long you wait. (i.e. a parent or grandparent's computer, a server/HTPC, a work computer that can't afford downtime, etc.) Its simplicity and resultant reliability are strengths, not weaknesses, and someone who chooses to run it over Arch or OpenSUSE or whatever for their own reasons is no less mature or capable inherently than those of us that run those for whatever reasons we might have.

      Well of course Weiland is not ready yet in Linux mint. Clem and his team even said themselves before mint beta 22 even launched that it wouldn't be ready for at least another year if not longer. Waylon's not even ready and other distros yet Siri there are still some basic pieces of functionality that don't even work

      I don't know how many more times I have to post this comment before stupid Google UA-cam will finally show it but here tries a third time. Of course Wayland is not ready yet in Linux Mint. Clem and his team even said so themselves that it would not be ready for prime time machines for at least another year if not longer
      Waylon isn't even radio on other distros if you want to get technical because there are still some basic pieces of functionality that don't yet work in Wayland
