"Pushed by the hand of god" is how one modern day race car driver expressed the experience of throttling the 917/30. It is the most insane car ever created for racing.

I was lucky enough to sit in the Radillon at the start of the 1970 Spa 1.000 kms with Rodriguez and Siffert side by side (and a bit more) at the start of the race... IN these years, the Proto were indeed quicker around Spa than the F1 !

Google "FIA Masters Historic Championship." They run their own racing schedule but it's the best way to watch older ('66 up to '85) F1 cars race. Unfotunately there is no good option for F1 cars from 90s and 00s, mainly because they are much more difficult to run as a small team. The cars from the masters championship basically all run the easy to maintain Cosworth DFV that was so popular in that time.

This type of 917K and another 917 were part of one of the most extraordinary things that I ever witnessed at a racetrack. At the 1973 Can-Am opener at Mosport, Donohue was in the new 917 and Scheckter was in an earlier 917. As I recall, they shared the front row. When the flag dropped, these two simply disappeared. Near the end of the fourth lap (on a 2.5 mile circuit), they caught up to some backmarkers and there was a minor collision. No one else was even close to the pace of these two cars and drivers. Incredible.

The 917/30 did really produce 1580 hp at Taladega in speed record version only. In CanAm race, it produces somewhat the same HP than the previous version (917/10), somewhere between 900 and 1200 hp.

@@greg9985 I have the Archive and Works Catalogue book and have only seen a maximum quoted and verified power figure of 1100ps for the /30.
I understand this was not at maximum boost pressure but I've never seen any sources for 1500ps+ 'qualifying' power from this car. My understanding is it was a myth based on the car's boost control mechanism not being at max during races. People then claimed it could make as much as 1400, which then grew to 1500 and then 1600. If you have a source for the Taledega power figure then I'd love to see it as I've yet to see an officially quoted max power fig. Or we could wait for someone to actually dyno a /30.

@@UbERRetroGamer8432 One thing is sure: the Taladega version had 2 big intercoolers (whereas the "regular" canam version had none). It implies cooler air so more hp. An interesting article about that: www.stavtech.co.uk/home/the-internet-always-talks-about-the-1580bhp-porsche-91730s-but-i-think-only-one-ever-was
But one sure thing: this Taladega configuration has do be dynoed to have a REAL hp figure.
