Paul, thats the first time I ever heard someone play actual jazz on a jazzmaster! It has a sound all its own & I enjoyed every bit of it-but it’s like comparing the Tele to the Jazzmaster is like comparing apples to oranges, well done mate
Thanks Glen, I’m delighted you liked my Jazzmaster 😊
Indeed
“move my fingers about until it sounds nice” - now that’s something you will not find in any other instruction video or book. Love it.
Love it 🤣. Yes, I’d be thrown out of any Theory class for sure! Cheers Steve 👍
Harlem Nocturn. Have not heard that in half a lifetime. It was great then and you just brought it to life again. Sweet.
That Quarter Pounder / Stormy Monday combo on a blackguard heavy relic make this my favorite tele on the internet. I love watching that one.
I’m delighted to hear that! Thanks man 🍻
Crazy nifty scales, thank you very much...
We're all walking puddles so moon phaze, etc. ain't all that crazy...
I thimk I'm waxing at ebb tide as I pray for the next flood of inspiration...
The very best to y'all
Cheers Jonny 👍
really notice how big the frets are on the telly, feck me , they're massive !! as you said, not a comparison video, but great to hear and see you playing both. some lovely wee licks in there when your not playing those daft notes :) hope you enjoyed your snooze cheers pal
Cheers Charlie. I finally got me some good sleep, and so I’m back in the land of the living!
I've never heard such exquisite phrasing and tone, it's always a treat when a new video drops here. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, which is very appreciated...........cheers!
What a lovely compliment pharmerdavid! Appreciated, cheers 🍻
That was great Paul. Thank you.
Cheers Craig 👍
As always my friend just so excellent. What a great job on this piece, thank you. So expressive.
Thanks rpmblues 👍
Love everything you do Paul keep up the awesome work I learned some priceless stuff from you
That makes me smile Rick. Cheers mate
Another session that is valuable beyond estimation. Thank Paul.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you Steve 🍻
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Paul
Thanks aminahmed 👍
Both for sure. I have 4 Tele’s and 2 Strats. I’m more of a Tele guy. Though I would love a good Jazzmaster. Your playing was mind blowing, Paul, cheers!
Well thank you man, delighted you liked my playing. 🍻
Ahhhh man…. What a beautiful rendition of Harlem Nocturne done in the style of the one and only Danny Gatton. Paul, you are awesome and so is your tone and your concept to chord/melody harmonisation.
Well thank you fretboardmaster, that comment makes my day 👍
Absolutely incredible playing Paul!
Thank you Music_works. It’s a delight to read such a nice comment. Cheers mate
Hi Paul, I really loved the piece of music from the Telecaster. There is so much going on. Another great lesson.
Thanks Greg, delighted you liked it. Yeah, that Tele stuff was heavily stolen / influenced by the late and incredible Danny Gatton. 🍻
Love the jazzmaster! Thanks again for all you do Paul you help all of us so much. Love you all Bill.
My pleasure Bill, cheers 🍻
Cheers, Paul. As always, you make each of your guitars sound amazing, including the new Oswald. Easy to hear how well you've bonded with it, but, as I've said to you before, to me, the truest expression of your playing is always expressed through the Tele. Danny and Roy are smiling down on you, for sure. Take care Brother, now get some sleep! Best always, Vern.
Thank you Mightyv. Yes, I remember you commenting a while ago as regards my truest expression being through the Tele. I have such precious associations with Telecasters, from my earliest days. I learned on one, I used to play one in a country band, and of course Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, and Jerry Donahue are heroes to me 😊
Unfair comparison but of course you didn’t mean it that way. Thanks to Danny one of my favorites! Really nice version!
Thanks Amalia 👍
Get some rest Paul! Thank you for your lovely demonstrations, as always!
My pleasure! Thanks zpmc55 👍
This was effin great Paul. Cheers
It was a fun one to make 😊. Cheers Wallqvist
Thank you Paul keep up the great work and thank you for another great video best wishes from Glasgow
Thank you Frank, you too mate 🍻
Lovely as always.
Thank you Lyle! Nice to see you stop by my wee UA-cam channel 🍻
Paul, you're a man after my own heart. The Jazzmaster, heavy flats, tuned down... beautiful. You told me before about keeping flats on the JM and liking it, well, I have not been disappointed. hahaha
Feel free to upload that thing every day of the week.
Cheers!
Well thank you man, I’m delighted you tried the flats 👍. Have a great weekend 🍻
Jazzmasters sound so pure I love it. Like the guitar being played acoustically. Seems like it’s fallen into your hands perfectly in time for the way your playing is evolving as well. Congrats my friend!
Thanks Padovann. As regards the timing of its arrival, I totally agree. Must be fate 😊🙏
@@paulstaffordcook8799isn’t it wonderful Paul. I hope you enjoy the hell out of it !
@@benallmark9671 Cheers Ben 👍
It’s incredibly refreshing to stumble across a video of a guy who CAN ACTUALLY PLAY on UA-cam. It sounds mean I guess, but the ratio of guys who strum an out of tune A chord through $10k worth of gear vs guys like this is off the charts. Long story short, thank you. 😊
Thank you so much man, I appreciate that. Cheers 👍
No need for it Tyler. Just enjoy the fact you can play.
Excellent playing Paul. I get what you mean by the phase of the Moon. When I used to drink in Tennets Bar in Byres Rd Glasgow they used to always put more bouncers on during a full moon, the clientelle seemed to always act very strange.
More bouncers during a full moon, that’s funny 🤣. And yet kinda logical. Cheers Paul, the moon phase changes tomorrow so I’m sure I’ll be back to normal by mid week 🤞
Your opening gambit on the Jazzmaster was exquisite. Such touch & feel. There's a man who is at one with a six string. ☺️
Thank you Al. I’m gettin better eh 🤣. Hope you’re doing good Al 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799you’re most definitely getting better and better all the time. It’s a joy and privilege to watch the progress.
That was great thank you ! your are a special player - in a very good way
Thank you very much pml394.
For the depth and clarity of its sound, I would tend to say that I prefer the jazzmaster 🥰
Thanks Nick! Yeah, I love that it sounds like nothing else in my collection.
Wow, I love that piece you played on the tele. Your choice of dissonant note is consistently spot on, keeps the listener engaged and guessing where you will go next. Of course, the true master of the dissonant note was Les Dawson, but we dont want to turn into that.
Thanks Bazilbrushrocks 👍. And yes, wasn’t Les Dawson just fab! In fact, maybe I’ll do a video one day “If Les Dawson played Strats”…. you can imagine what fun that would be, deliberately hitting wrong notes 🤣
I love that he played music I actually play!
Both brilliant, but that tele in your hands is spectacular - 🙂That tele piece is a great tribute to the amazing Danny Gatton.
Thank you kindly Ian. Cheers 🍻
Amazing playing and content as ever Paul. I started watching your channel regularly quite a while ago and was completely blown away. It’s properly inspirational, although I can only dream of playing like you, i am always excited when you post new videos. Keep up the great work and thank you 🙏
Thank you Ben! It’s a lovely thing to read comments like yours. Cheers 🍻
Your playing on the Tele is frankly astonishing!
Wow, thank you Sir! That makes my day! Cheers
Great video as always kid, it's quite obvious your in love with the jazzer , now to the real entertainment hehe. 1. A soft lad buys a jigsaw, gets it home and empties the contents onto the table and they all look the same, he phones a mate and tells him, he says " och, you've got them the wrong way round", so he turns them over and they're still the same, his mate says " what's on the box ?", soft lads says "it's a picture of a hen", mate says " you plonker, you've bought CORNFLAKES ". 2. Fella suspects his wife of cheating, so he goes home early to catch her out, bursts in the bedroom and she's in bed herself , he says " ok, where is he ?", she says "where's who, what are you talking about, I've had to lie down with a migraine ", he hears a car starting up downstairs and says " it's him, he looks around then picks up a fridge and hoists it out the window and lands right on the roof, a bit later in the hospital 2 fellas are next to one another swathed in bandages, one says " Christ what happened to you ?", he says " I was about to go to work when some nutter threw a fridge out of a block of flats and it landed on my car, what happened to you ?", fella says "well, I was sitting in this fridge ". Take care kid.
For some reason that one about the Cornflakes really got me 🤣. My wife and son don’t seem to get it and now they think I’m mad. Cheers John
Superb Playing
Thank you Anthony 🍻
Great stuff Paul and really informative. Also might I ask why you sold your prs santana? I'm thinking of getting one. Thanks again.
Hi RiffCodger. Actually, I’d recommend one. They’re awesome! They’re just not very “me”, i.e. they don’t ooze vintage appeal. Every time I hold one I think “This is a great guitar”, whereas every time I hold my Gibsons I think “I need to own this” 🤣.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Understood. Thanks Paul I will probably get one but like you it won't feel the same as one of the top guns👍
Excellent as usual 👍🎸
Thank you Bill 👍
Lovely stuff! It’s amazing how Leo set the standard right out of the gate. Tele is the tops imo.
Thanks Mooseymoose! Yes, I’d agree that the Tele has to win 😊
An Incredible Gatton Rendition!!!!
Thank you Steve! Cheers
Biorhythms Paul. The ebb and flow of physical and emotional energy.
That makes so much sense. And makes me feel better 😊
Hi Paul , smooth, mysterious & exciting playing spread across Leo's finest. Thanks for the explanation & demonstration.
Not sexy I know, but have you tried a sleep mask? Hope you get some rest if not sleep.
Thanks Nicholas, delighted you liked the playing 👍. As regards a sleep mask…. actually no, I’ve never tried that yet 🤔
Great video Paul.
Thanks Graeme, it was a fun one to make 😊
Hi Paul, hope you took some rest. While being a clean tone man generally speaking, I prefered here the Telecaster tones over the Jazzmaster, at least for the rendition of warmth feeling in the night if Harlem, warmth and danger. About the lesson, may be in another life I'll be capable of playing it, haha. At least I've recognized some augmented chords that I have to play in a Misty arrangement.
Hi Gilles! Delighted you liked the Tele tones in this vid. What a fantastic song that is (Harlem Nocturne). So many versions to enjoy. Cheers Gilles, enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Hi Paul, I hope you don't see this until you've had some sleep. As much as I do love the the tone and looks of that Jazzmaster I think that this episode was taken by the Harlem Nocturne rendition on the Tele.
Thanks Chuck. Yeah, that Tele just brought out a whole different attitude in my playing. It was fun to pretend to be Danny Gatton 🤣. Hope he approves, as he watches me from beyond the pearly gates.
Your style of playing is very similar to what I'm trying to develop 😮...
Incredible!!!
Well thank you hgostos 👍. Appreciated
Both ! The Jazzmaster provides a brilliant contrast to the Tele. Nice playing.
Cheers Michael, delighted you like both 😊. I’m a very lucky boy.
Excellent
Cheers Kevin 🍻
What else can you tell us - oh SWAMY of life - (jk) love your playing dude - as always
Jazzmaster or Tele? I was ready to kneejerk "Tele" but boy oh boy that Jazzmaster sounds awesome!
Thanks Cheguebuddha, I’m one very lucky boy 😊
Damn Paul, that tele sounds so good. Maybe I am a little biased being a big Danny fan.
Thanks Mijstrats 👍. Yes, wasn’t Danny just incredible. I’ve never heard anyone fuse Jazz / country / blues like that. RIP Danny Gatton
As the saying goes..You can’t have too many Teles…👍😎
The correct answer is: both ( + Jaguar, Stratocaster, Mustang, etc.)... :P Nice playing as usual, Paul!
Thanks surfysonic 👍
Paul, glad to see you’re getting on so well with the new Jazzmaster.
Are you doing any busking these days? We’ll be back in Edinburgh in a couple weeks for a week of shows during Fringe. Would enjoy getting to hear you play in person if you’ll be out and about. Cheers!
Hi Nelshansen. Actually, I tend to combine busking with my regular trips up north (my favourite places to busk are Perth and Stirling). I’ve stopped doing it in my home town of Edinburgh because of all the bloody bagpipers drowning me out 🤣. That said, I’m sure you will have a lovely trip. It’s a great time to wander round the city 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thanks for the reply, Paul. Any place you recommend to hear some good music? Thanks again, Nels
@@nelshansen1 I’m probably the worst person to ask, as I rarely go up town these days 🤣. However Bannermans bar and Whistle Binkies have always had good bands. 👍
An original jazzmaster pickup is usually around the same DC resistance as a PAF around 8k and they use the same wire but they sound very different which just goes to show you cant judge the output by the dc resistance. A PAF has a lot of extra metal like baseplates, spacers, covers, screws and slugs that all contribute to the output. A jazzmaster pickup is just 6 individual magnets and wire, nothing extra just pure unimpeded tone.
Hi Ben. Yeah, whilst I didn’t know about the technical aspects of what you’ve just said, I’m quite amazed at how tone-full that guitar is.
Paul,
Watching you settle in to the Jazz Master is interesting. It seems as though you've found that sound and feel that evokes the emotions you want to express.
The inspiration comes through quite clearly.👌
The Tele is always one of your go to instruments, so it's no surprise that you went straight for James Bond and of course a bit of Layla as well. 😂🤣
Obviously your two favorite instruments.😉
By the way, I thought you said you didn't know how to play with emotion, guess the Jazz Master is fixing that up for you.
Cheers.🤙
Thanks GW, I’m really loving the Jazzmaster. It sounds like nothing else in my little collection. Enjoy the rest of your weekend GW.
Would love a break down of Harlem Nocturne!
Ok, noted 👍. I’ll see who else wants it, as I catch up on my comments today. Cheers Jason
Im haunted by that tele im sure of it. And the internet being how it is by tracking your every word and search - it keeps showing me what shops have custom shop teles in that look super close to yours. Its torture hahaha
I feel your pain Paul. I’ll leave it to you in my Will, should I get hit by the proverbial bus tomorrow 😉
@@paulstaffordcook8799 🤣 i dont want any guitar player to not be able to play anymore! I best just get saving!
Ibanez GB 30 or Washburn J3.Or fit Tonerider AC 4 pickups.
Well that’s thrown me 😊!. I’m off to google to look those two up. Cheers Paul
Roy Buchanan fabulous!
Thanks jazz4guitar 👍
Lovely playing, both impeccable . . . the sound from the Jazzmaster is something else, isn't it? Get some sleep! 😀
Thanks Morton 👍. Delighted to report I’m now sleeping soundly 🤣
Get some rest mate. The video was great as always.
Cheers Ben 👍
You must have heard of Big Lazy, yes?
Actually, I haven’t heard of them. But now I’m intrigued…. I’ll check them out. 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 yeah I think you'd like them, all instrumental...fronted by Stephen Ulrich, plays a nice vintage 53 Gretsch Jet. Alot of stuff that sounds sort of like what you played at around 2:10....look up a song called "Ramona" by Big Lazy as an intro
@@bluesintheblood Just listened to Ramona by Big Lazy. Yeah! Within 15 seconds I’m like “yeah, I LIKE this”. So that’s me now on my Big Lazy journey. Cheers man
Nice knobbery!
Thanks Choimdachoim 🤣
Tele!!
I agree 👍
