Capturing Gary & Ricks Impact is Imminent Guitar Tone - Marshall DSL20

- Опубліковано 19 чер 2021
- One of the most aggressive tones in metal. Gary and Rick's guitar playing on this album is unreal. Impact is Imminent is so underrated and overlooked for what it was.

When Gary Holt endorses your channel, you know you've arrived!
The Gary Holt intro will never grow old! 🤘🤘
Was waiting for this. Imo one of the best thrash sounds ever.
Thrash and Star Wars I guess we’re friends now
Absolutely my personal favorite band
Not only is the tone on Impact underrated, but the entire album as a whole is. It’s easily, in my opinion, one of the best tones Gary and Rick ever achieved. Some don’t like the way the album was recorded, which I understand, but I love it. So heavy and crushing, especially for 1990.
I wouldn't say underrated at all, EVERYONE knows how brutal Exodus is dude, Coming from a player since 1985.... That's the tone everyone in metal chases, The brutal death tone, like listening to S.O.D , That's brutal!
Yes, Fucking Brutal tone... the louder you turn it up the better 🤘
My favorite album from Exodus👍
"mids a lil bit past lunchtime" i love that immensely xD
I wanna hear and see you cover toxic waltz.
Most overrated Exodus song
My intro to thrash back in the day. I fell asleep listening to some metal show on the radio and I woke up to Death Decides. That was it for me, hooked forever.
IMPACT IS IMMINENT!!!!! Love their tones, like you said when this came out in 1990 grunge was starting to sprout up in the scene
First Exodus album I ever heard and still my favorite to this day. not a bad track on the whole thing and Changing of the guard is one the greatest tunes ever written. The trade offs between Holt and Hunolt are nothing short of spectacular.
That is some brutal guitar tone right there! Exodus really had the best crushing guitar tones back in the day! This really makes me I wonder if this setup could recreate the Prong Cleansing tone, especially the live one! It has to be one of the heaviest things known to man! Cheers!
Prong 'cleansing' was a Korg G1 (the red pedal Dime used for the Trendkill demos) through a Marshall 800... Killer tone 🤘
@@blakkno666 Yep, it really was a crushing tone! Cheers!
@@kurglekreutzer6344 I actually have a G1! I just need a Marshall 🤘😂👍..
Impact Is Imminent album definitely needs some more love! And Force Of Habit as well in my opinion. 2 overlooked albums and pretty much forgotten by many.
0:20, When Lamb's bird starts doing a little thrashing
That is a perfect replication of that album's tone. You've really got a knack for doing this. Great playing too, as always. Would love to see you do a similar "tone capture" series using just amp sims.
They don’t behave the same. Great tones can be had but pedal chains don’t work the same in sims.
Killer!!! I totally forgot I had this album on tape.. never got the CD. Bought just now! Been years.
One of my favorite Exodus albums and definitely a really underrated thrash album.
Hit the nail on the head again buddy.
Man..your playing is always spot on and... you NAIL these classic tones every time.I've lived most all these records and you show them respect and play with passion.Keep it coming!
Love this album, it’s so underrated.
Overlooked and underrated as fuck! Tone nailed !
I love that tone so much it's so agressive and perfect for chugging
I think that Impact was a great follow up to Fabulous. The album title is just awesome and my track from the album is A.W.O.l. Thanks for this video
Another awesome tone, thanks for the vid.
My new favorite channel. Thank you for making these great videos! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I had this album on cassette when I was a kid. I listened to it a lot! Great album!
me too.
Thanks for another great video. Digging this content...probably cause it's so relevant to my time. Cheers from Texas.
That was the last classic Exodus album, awesome tone. Love all the riffs and the wild dueling tremolo dive bombs from Gary and Rick. 🤘🏼🎸
Miss your vids. Hope you are doing well. Exodus takes me back to my high school days in the mid 80's. Bonded By Blood and Pleasures of the Flesh got played a lot back then. Been a fan since. Bucket list show for me is coming up next week!!!!!! Testament, Exodus, and Death Angel. I have seen Testament a few times over the years but not Exodus and Death Angel. I know you would have to travel a great deal to get to many shows. I am sure I am not as bad but it is at least a 4 hour drive to see the big acts. I am driving 5 hours to see this show. Cannot wait!
Been waiting for something like this since I was a young whippersnapper. It's my favorite Exodus album and I still have it on cassette tape. Seriously has some of their best riffing and I love that static & crunchy tone. Thanks so much for this one right here!
I love this album. Hearing you play Within the Walls of Chaos and Lunatic Parade made my day! Still trying to track down a copy of this album for my vinyl collection
another great vid. love this album. only death decides is my fav.
Wegen III was released i was blown away by this brutal tone. Good work, you nailed it
Holy shit I’ve been hoping you’d do this, such a sick tone
Holy hell mate, is there a thrash tone that you and this amp CAN'T do? You've outdone yourself here. I need a DSL20 and the TwoNotes Captor X. Every time I watch one of your tone videos with the DSL, I'm blown away. You're awesome Lamb, thank you for these!!!
Lamb, I wanted to let you know I picked up a TwoNotes Captor X last year for Christmas. My family is generous! I found a used DSL20H in great condition as well. I've never sounded better. With the ENGL XXL V30 cabs from TwoNotes, it's simply incredible tones. Thank you for all that you do! We're glad to have you back! Cheers from Texas!
Impact is my favorite.
You nailed it🤘🏻
Greetings from Germany 🤘🏻
THIS IS AMAZING MAN
Man i never thought this tone was achieved by boosting scooped mids. This video is one heck of a ride. Thank you for making this!
The brutal kick ass tone of Exodus. You got it . Great vid
Impact is Imminent is an AWESOME Album!!
Some neck snapping tracks on this record!!
impact Always one of my favorite tones
yesssss this is so badass one of my fav guitar tones
Holy fucking SHIT dude this sounds so good!!!!! This is why I'm subscribed to you. I love your videos and what you do!!! So amazing!!!
Amazing job!!! What about capturing the tones of Gary and Rick on the Fabulous Disaster album?
Oneof the best riff ever, makes bang my head every time.
Nice video, man!
Sounds absolutely amazing...reminds me of So Far So good So What tone.
very cool! good to hear some changing of the guard and heads you win riffs!
Those riffs are tough to work out, I’d love to see Kragen do a tab book for this album. Exodus riffs are the hardest to work out hands down
@@LambChopper678 you should perhaps look into some forbidden! those songs and riffs on forbidden evil and twisted into form are insane! definitely the most technically proficient bay area band!
This is great! I tried this setup with my JCM2000 half stack but had a different EQ pedal (DOD 7-band) after the SD-1. Still achieved that Exodus crunch.
Sheettt, this tone is amazing
Love that record!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
i NEED to know that jackson model! i’m a jackson player myself and love your gear man :)
Crushing tone on this album
Omg !!!this for me is the perfect riff ever...like classic s for all time ...
Its my absolute favourite Exodus album, and one of my favourite guitar tones ever!
The DSL shines once again!
Should'nt you use the Rhoads to play a JB on this one?
Id like you to make a video about Heathen's Victims of Deception!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
I tried the Rhoads with the tb-4 but the thrash factors in the KVX sounded much closer. They’re probably my favorite pickup ever made. The So Far So Good tone video I did compares them both and you can hear the difference they make. Pretty brutal
Heard that on Impact Is Imminent they used Kitty Hawk Quattro preamps. Good tone chasing here!
You should do exhorders tone from The Law album.
Tone is awesome! I love Exodus!!!!
Bravo ! Gary is da the thrash riff lord ! .... Giving props to one of Exodus's finest albums. Love 'Lunatic Parade' thanks for including that. I always thought it was like a sequel to 'Toxic Waltz' lol ...... Next up Chop you gotta do Force of Habit another fine Exodus album. Cheers
I’d love to do an exodus album every week🤘🏻
I have shovel headed on my list coming up soon which I’m looking forward to
Brutal tone, dude. Do Shovel Headed!
Sweet! Another amazing tone video! I'd be very curious to hear your take on Slayer's Divine Intervention (that vicious bass-heavy guitar sound is somewhat underrated in my opinion) and Christ Illusion's tones and also some vintage Testament (Practice What You Preach or The New Order?). Anyway great content as always, and thanks to you I'm getting my DSL20HR with cab next week! Already gotten the pedal stuff you recommended here (the EQs and the NS-2) and can't wait to have some fun riffing on some classic metal! Cheers from Italy!
It’s got a following but I never got into it. I didn’t like the 90’s movement removing solos and technical riffs. I remember reading an article when Zakk and Dime first met at a festival. They both hung out as they were the only guys who could actually play their guitars there.
I kind of felt like they followed a trend on that one and went backwards.
It’s just my opinion, I love Slayer to death
@@LambChopper678 To my knowledge Slayer never removed guitar solos from their albums 😆 They got more groovier and less focused on speed alone, but all their albums post-Seasons have got guitar solos and kickass songs. I suggest you give Divine Intervention, Diabolus, God Hates Us All and all the later albums another try, you won't regret it! Especially Divine Intervention and Christ Illusion (such a brutal album) are really great...but I personally like 'em all. Keep it metal! Can't wait for another DSL tone video! I'll try some of those classic guitar sounds as soon as I'll get home and play on my DSL20 again!
@@JulesN. I’m very familiar with all Slayer albums, I just don’t really like Divine or Diabolos. God Hates is pretty cool and Christ illusion is up there with seasons. There’s always an album or two in every band catalogue that we don’t enjoy as much as the others
Your tone series is the best part about waking up on a Sunday morning. I would be totally surprised if Gary didn't show up at your door asking you to join the band. And I agree 100% with you about amp sims. To me, nothing beats the sound of a real amp.
Cheers man, 🙏🏻
This tone is killer, i dunno why people don't like this album and tone.
It's more the snare-and-vocals mix that irritates me, but it's worth it because the riffs are insane!
@@JadeDude1973the bass is also practically non existent on the album as well.
@@rmatt498lars must’ve mixed it lmao
Awesome album and you nailed the sound brother!
And you are spot on reegarding the 'real' amps. I've played for over 25 years now, and I'm still shit 🤣, but was very lucky to have a real amp (old Fender Twin) early and get vey use to it! I try with practice amps, modelling and amp sims, it just does not work for me.
sweet T Chopper!
They were at k-mart for $6, my grey target shirts are falling apart so I bought 3. I guess they’re the new grey 🤣
Ooh now... I'm in a bar on the beers and can't listen to this right now...but YES YES YES.. that was a fucking savage tone, one of the best ever, Up there with Dimes cfh ... I don't even need to watch this right now as I know you've nailed it being the tone master 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Pretty cool. Can you do Arch Enemy, Wages Of Sin ?
Yep Gary has epic tones!
Nice video
Nailed......... again.
I'm planning on getting a Mesa/Boogie Recto Verb 25 or I might get a DSL40CR which also can get the load guitar tone. Because I chopped up my Silvertone SS11 strat copy to have two single coils to play more of the slower songs on Load and Reload like the unforgiven II. I might get some Dimarzio super distortion single coil sized humbuckers to play some Thrash on my stratocaster.
Nice video 👍
Can you do killing is my business please?
Great video. Thanks for sharing it. Do you think the same settings would apply in a live setting playing with a band?? Thanks!!
I’d be bringing the top end down a little, the front row will lose their faces
@@LambChopper678 thanks again!!!
let the metal flow!!!
It's All Perry Mason's Fault !!! Hell YES!!!! But I can't believe you got outta there without hitting the "Only Death Decides " riff!!!!!!!! To this date, still one of the heaviest riffs of all time!!!!! Thanks Brother!!!
It’s a different tuning than I was in. That’s why it’s so heavy🤘🏻❗️I love that riff too
@@LambChopper678 DOH! I should’ve known! BTW when thinking about this album and Thinking about “scooping “ I was reminded of one of the heaviest and fastest scooped sounding riffs I had ever heard at the time, which was Sabbat’s “ The Clerical Conspiracy” .Andy Sneap, who is now in Judas Priest, played guitar on that record. This was an 1989 release. Go check that track out if you get a chance ! Thanks
Do you think you can a cover of Heads They Win (Tails You Lose) someday? That’s a really cool song, especially when you played the chorus.
hi, greetings from southamerica!!
this tone is great!!! would you use another effect for playing solos ??
maybe some type of booster or pre-amp??
cheers!!
Is it a Caballero Powell Peralta board? That tone is devastating, one of my all time fav
Hi Anthony! Your tone capture videos helped inspire me to get a Marshall DSL20HR. Have you ever tried putting your parametric EQ pedal in front of the amp like Gary does?
Yeah I’ve done that. Works well to boost the mids and cut the bass a little.
Same! I got really close to the Fabulous Disaster tone with an overdrive and parametric EQ in front of the amp and a 10-band EQ in the loop. Thanks so much for these tone capture videos! They’re super-helpful.
OBJECTION OVERRULED‼️🤘🏿
No way. The godfather of thrash. You have won you tube. Gary holt
@Lambchopper678 have you ever tried the Duncan sh5 or sh14? Ive got a sh14 here and its fantastic for riffs. Ive also read that Holt used the sh5 for a little.
Do the Toxic Waltz!!
The 6 band eq is not scooped like the MXR.... That's a different look and a first for me, Gary always says, straight from amp to guitar, nothing in between except a booster.... This is good stuff, Brutal tone, brutal guitar work!
Gary has his mid boost after his OD doing a very similar thing. I’ve always liked the aggressive eq in the front driving certain frequencies. Randy Rhoads was the first I knew doing it then Jeff and Kerry followed by Dime. One of the coolest ways to drive an amp 🤘🏻
Changing of the guard, Within the Walls of Chaos, and Objection Overruled should be live staples for Exodus. So heavy
What speaker is in that Marshall cab?? Sounds killer!
This tone gives me the same kind of satisfaction as At The Gates Slaughter of the soul 👌
Sd-1 and Dsl20 makes for a great thrash tone.
OH MY GOD YES
I actually have the old white KVX, same as yours with thrash factors in it as well. I'm not a fan of them over the original jb, although I am changing it to a parallel axis soon. Cheers lamb, great album tone.
I own a strat which I'm putting a EMG 81 in it to play some Thrash Metal and Death Metal.
What didn’t you like about the TF?
@@LambChopper678 I don't want to say I disliked them, they sound great, but I have a ordinary tb4 in my mahogany body Rhoads that I feel Sounds superior(to my ears at least) not sure if it's the wood or the pickup itself. When recorded through my sm57 I noticed the TF had a kind of scratchy sounding gain boost similar to the black winters but not nearly as extreme. It's hard to describe the sound, I may make my own video on them to clarify. I plan to switch them for the parralel axis and see how they sound. My KVX is made of basswood, I'm not sure if that also affects it. Cheers again mate and thank you for your great content.
Fair enough mate, I love that scratchy aspect
Have you attempted to get the Johnny Ramone sound 😛?
I have a jcm 900 and I’m just missing the 6 band eq. I have all the same gear. I set my amp tones the same I’m using a zakk wylde pedal set the same i have the same 10 band set the same. But my tone just sounds weak and thin. What am I doing wrong. I’m using an ltd eclipse with emgs
Hey LamChopper, quick question, if you use the MXR 6 band, does it even matter what pickups you use? Because I feel you can manipulate the EQ to mimic pretty much any pickup (active and passive). Do you agree?
Pickups always matter though you are right. If you have pickups that match the tone then you’re already in the ballpark before pushing the eq to its extremes. The less you push the limits, the quieter the unwanted noise and tighter the tone
Bro.........how many Marshall DSL heads have you helped sell......fuckin thing can help get almost any tone that ever mattered....good on ya mate. Hope Marshall wakes up and sends you a full stack of your choice for free. Thank you for sharing your tone chase
If I have a boss 7 band pedal do I need the mxr 6 band?? Also I bought a suhr IR reactive load should I sell it and get the topedo captor x?
I’ve never tried the boss 7 sorry, I’m not sure if it’ll boost the same
I
Meant he said I’m
Just a home boy from the bay. Damn spell check
Are you planning on doing the Seattle 89 tone?
Sure, it’s on my to do list somewhere
@@LambChopper678 ❤️
You should capture the exhibit b tone
Cover verbal razors!!!
Is this possible to get on a Randall?
Jesus Chris me buying a DSL20 is imminent
Amazing love the videos hope you see this comment
Remember Gary claiming it's his best shit done not the way he would've liked. Until death decides !
Exodus rules!
