In Kigali Rwanda we have Taxi Moto, similar to ur Okada, but instead of banning them, we regulated them with mandatory helmets for both driver and passenger, mandatory branded and numbered jacket to identify the driver and a lot of traffic police in the roads to enforce the rules. Banning is the most lazy, economically destructive and inefficient solution; Kigali is the cleanest and safest city in Africa, yet we have Okada roaming every road of the city, do better Lagos government

Nigerian government is the most irresponsible I have ever seen. You don’t remove a person’s means of livelihood without replacing some means of livelihood

The major problem in Nigeria is that there a huge gap between the Government and the Citizens especially the poor masses. The government does not see it as their responsibility to make provision for poor masses. That is why they have no plan that includes the less privilege in the society.

Adeola, your posts are all educative and informative, please keep it up. I enjoyed listening to you always. Africa leaders don't have plans for thier people and it seems they enjoyed the crime rate in the society because they are safe, that is what they think but God will show Himself Mighty among them by kicking them out one by ok one

That transport minister in Nigeria is insane comparing Singapore and London with smelling Lagos.
Is that how London and Singapore are planned. Trains are over and a fool will ban human beings from their livelihoods

Adeola! I understand your stand, as you will always say, "You know I don't know much...I'm just keeping it real".
To me it is not just about the inherent risks in the use of okada especially! It is the salient security risks from the majority of riders who come from the north in large numbers, in lorries, filled with young uneducated men and motorcycles.
The govt can't repatriate them because they are assumed to be Nigerians.
.But it seems to be a silent infiltration!

Adeola my sister, I just wanna thank you for what u do in shedding light on many issues that affects Nigeria.. one of the BIGGEST issues that annoys me as a Nigerian 😏 is the fact that many Nigerians do not like to take advise especially from someone or people with experience. It is not saying Nigerians in Nigeria are not educated, but rather the experience and knowledge gained while living abroad would be highly beneficial in making Nigeria a great country. The problem is as you already know even with the simple issue with okada, a high schooler here in America could’ve came up with ideas on how to make changes, transitioning people from bicycles to buses without leaving people with no transportation or work. Im not sure if the government has any knowledge about planning/ training and hiring months before banning bicycle on the road. My question is what will it hurt for anyone in a government position to pick up a phone and ask people like yourself and many others including myself who lives in America or Europe to advise them on how to implement changes or ideas on how to be effective!

Adeola my dear , as usual I agree 100% with you , because you usually make sense as opposed to those non-sense government officials who have no real regard for the welfare of the people . They are planning to dipatch more buses in 24 months , but how do they expect people to commute to their jobs and kids to go to school meanwhile they cannot tell you , because they don't care . Adeola , I will never wish for you to get to that dirty job that is called politics , but if ever you were willing to run for office you would have my vote because you are the only one who has common sense with a heart .

If they want to turn Lagos into a megacity of the likes which are found here in the U.S., then *the government must empower the people.* School is free for all students here from kindergarten to the 12th grade. You can obtain grants and loans for college, businesses; etc. Additionally, the common American can work (very) hard to achieve having a modest home, modest car and a decent lifestyle...even without a college degree.

Adeola, I support you in the statement that there should have been alternative transportation arrangements for Lagosians prior to banning the okadas. HOWEVER, Okadas MUST GO - many people use them to rob and commit other crimes, so they should remain banned.
I am in support of keeping keke napeps on the inside roads until the new arrangement is fully operational. Lagos CANNOT take care of everybody.

Nigeria is sick! One of the reasons for unemployment is unsecured business environment to foreign and local investors due to uncertainty over government policies and legislation. The O ride, Gokada and the likes with their workers understands better now. No one is saying, okada should be the means of transportation especially in the eyebrows of Lagos but then, the communication should be clear enough to all the stakeholders as to the fashion in which the transition will follow in order for everyone to make a well informed decision and have a soft landing. Also, listening to the transportation guy speaking for the govt of Lagos is a man that is so disconnected, insensitive and nonchalant about the plight of people's welfare. You were so quick to inflict pain without any relief measure in place. That amounts to wickedness.

One of the problems of Nigerian as a whole is biometrics. Not knowing who is who.
Otherwise, the government could have given out car loans for taxis to these people and have them pay slowly. But because you don't know who is who, if you do that people will disappear and not pay!!!

The government helps jobless people and ensures that they feed well have good health care and are not homeless. I don't see the well thought out and developed public transport system that I see in the U.K. In Lagos. Pls don't make comparisons that are senseless and baseless.

Banning Okada will not stop the problems of Lagos traffic connection. These ok ada. riders are all graduates with no jobs to go to after their education. If Lagos or other states can create jobs everywhere in Nigeria as a whole, all these jobless people will not be riding Okada for living. Provide jobs for graduates you will see less okada riders on the street. Never you consider Britain with Nigeria when it comes to employment for people. The Nigerian government are complaining of armed robbers or kidnappers when there's no jobs for them after graduating. Now that the Lagos state government banned the okada riders, wait and see what will happen, you aren't seen anything yet because these people needs their daily bread for living.

  • @dareakinde4456
    @dareakinde4456 4 роки тому +3

Even though I agree with the Lagos state government in some aspects concerning the city being more organized , I completely disagree on the timing and the approach Lagos is taking.
Firstly, the rate of unemployment in Lagos, and Nigeria as a whole is alarming. Many of those okada riders you criticise are law abiding graduates who deserve means of livelihood for their respective families. It's the unemployment that sky rocketed in the 90s that warranted the shipping in of okada to Nigeria just as Generators of different power ratings came in the 90s due to poor power supply.
Secondly, Okada and keke as a means of transport help to support the vehicles in conveying millions of Lagos workers daily . As a result of this development, people of different ages(including school pupils and students) walk long miles to and fro everyday . Are we not cruel and insensitive? How many extra buses did the government provide to cushion the impact of the ban?
It's leadership failure that warranted this mess we are in. So if they're banning people's legitimate sources of income they must provide alternatives else the anarchy you think you're preventing will even be worse. Whether we like it or not people must feed themselves. Crime and insecurity will increase massively since thousands are gonna be rendered jobless in addition to the previous millions living below the poverty level. Let's stop comparing the Nigeria of now to the developed and sane countries.

Am so angry with the governor and commissioner of transport and their advisers, senseless wicked selfish sets of people. How do you expect them to earn their livelihood? A lot of people will turn to criminals. Please come together and take them to court simple. Very sad. The cause of accident is bad road and poor amenities in the hospital, ordinary shiringe patients have to buy. Awon ika.

Good day, Adeola. Please can you tell those in authority in Lagos that there is motor cycle lane in Cotonou, some few minutes drive from Lagos. They should create the lanes and regulate the Okada transport system.
