  • Comparing late summer apples to new seedling varieties. Chestnut Crab, Kerry Pippin, Trailman, Ginger Gold, Tangowine, Twang, Dorsett Golden, Williams' Pride x Vixen and more. Turns out my two new favorite early pie apples are both Williams' Pride x Vixen seedlings. There is a great deal of potential for improving early apples, especially the late summer apples. It will not be a difficult task, it is just a matter of making the right crosses and growing them out. I'm on the first part and have seeds available each winter.     17:05 Really great to see you cover Dorsett Golden, I've been breeding with Dorsett now for a couple years to try and get some improved low chill varieties, as it's the lowest chill of any apple I've currently got (lower than Anna, Tropic Sweet, and maybe a little lower than Tropical Beauty, but significantly earlier to break dormancy).
    I'm trying to focus on getting the texture sorted out first, using Cosmic Crisp, Kalei, and Envy, the last of which I've got the highest hopes for!

      Good to hear you are working on that. Do you use King David at all? I know it is low chill, I just don't know how low.

      It's definitely later to break dormancy, than the four "Tropical" apples above, so I'd put it at the higher end of Anna's listed chill requirements (Anna's range is listed as 200-400, it's a solid 250 here, King David would be more like 350-400).
      I've actually been crossing my King David with Tropical Beauty mostly (it's an Aussie apple, so I'm not sure if it's available it's in the US), that tastes like vanilla and coconut, and any of those flavours seemed a great fit for King David's spices.
      When my Black Strawberry starts to bear I was planning to cross that with Dorsett, rather than King David directly.

    It's funny, when saw the Billy's honeycrisp apple, I immediately thought it was a red delicious cross (because of the shape and the richer red colour). I may have watched too many of your apple videos.

      Typically, you'll see some traits of both parents. In this case though, I really can't spot any honeycrisp in there. I guess there is no guarantee that it really is a honeycrisp seedling, but that is the story.

    Admittedly my favorite grocery store apple is Honeycrisp because of the crispness but also the flavor. It kinda reminds me of Fla-Vor-Ice pops lol.

      I just have not had one with much flavor yet. Maybe someday. Might have to grow it myself, but it looks like it's about to croak.

    I really appreciate your taste testings! Started watching your videos a couple of years ago when I was hunting down apple tree pruning info, and have been watching everything to do with apple trees ever since.
    I avoid your ax videos, however; me + 1 ax = 1 ER trip.

    Pristine is outstanding. My wife gave it 2 thumbs up. Mine bore for the first time this year in Walnut Creek. It is completely yellow/green, no red at all in my climate.
    Impressed with your Chestnut Crabs. They don't get that red for me. Maybe your nights are cooler?

      We typically have a lot of cool nights. It might be warm here, but usually not at night. Good for apples, but for veg, it stops everything from growing fast at night.

    Thanks for the survey of early varieties. Chestnut sounds awesome and I have it grafted on a frankentree, but no taste this year : /
    I did get a crop of Williams Pride for the first time this year, and can see why you've used it extensively in breeding. Decent texture, very good flavor, possibly influenced a bit by the significant amounts of pink flesh beneath the skin. I figured I'd cross first and ask questions later, and got some offspring with Sugarwood, Redfield and Black Limbertwig I'm excited to grow out next year.
    Tried Bill's Red Flesh at a farmers market recently. Apparently it ripens mid August! Lots of red flesh, and definitely the most of the berry flavor you describe in this class of apple that I've tasted so far. I'd say like a combo of Strawberry and raspberry. Very tasty. Texture was good. Very little sugar, and high acid though. I saved all the seeds! The combo of red flesh and early season makes this a natural apple for me to cross with some late varieties, including black strawberry.

    Early apples are the most interessting ones for me. There are many good autumn or winter apples. But good early apples are rare.
    I really need to plant more early Varietys and breed with them myself. My earliest apple tree got killed by voles last winter...

    Honey crisp is such a primadonna, it has all kinds of physiological issues with leaf, wood, and fruit. If you really want to grow it well, it prefers to be on a more vigorous rootstock like M111 and it doesn't like to share the rootstock with other varieties (no mulit-grafting). It also likes a yearly sprinkling of ground limestone, preferably with some mulch. In my experience, many seedlings inherit the honeycrisp character flaws.

      Mine are on m111 and they are still the ugliest most unproductive trees in my orchard. Horrible trees.

      That is on M111, but over gravenstein and competing with all the other stuff on that tree. At this point, my only real interest in Honeycrisp is growing it myself so I can see if the fuss is justified. Breeding with it seems like heading in the wrong direction in every way except texture and keeping ability.

    Loved this video so much! While I try to figure out what kind of apples I have. I have a chestnut crab with a ton of red flesh when very ripe. I now know what you mean by the cherry flavors first hand! I am so excited to update my breeding projects from your pollen on our channel and will let you know when the I get the video out. :)

      I've never seen any red flesh at all in chestnut. Maybe you have somethiung else, or do you mean it is a seedling?

    My 'Honeycrisp' in Estonia has awful looking leaves in this year as well. Looks somewhat simiar to chlorosis, but that's not it. Never been this bad before. Not sure what's the reason. All other apple varieties are just fine :D!

    Yellowing leaves on honeycrisp is normal. Something to do with it’s inability to absorb calcium I believe.

    My Honeycrisp branch always looks a little ragged this time of year. It gets a similar browning, I thought it was some kind of nutrient deficiency. This year that whole tree got pretty bad scab. Just a random 4-in-1 tree from the big orange box store, unknown rootstock some kind of dwarfing.

    Thanks. I've been trying to grow Tangowine for a decade, various mishaps and now I find it's incompatible with Bud 118 but I managed to graft it to B9 this spring before I lost the mom. Maybe try drying some slices since it's noted as "tops for drying" also disease resistant plus the red veining inside. I have yet to taste it, but I think I'll get to try Sweet 16 this year which makes me happy.

      My sweet 16 trees are loaded this year. They ripen pretty early, starting in a week or two maybe.

    If you like cherry tasting like apples I'd advise you to get the 'Festivale Rouge ' apple tree, from the French apple breeder: Georges Delbard. It's my top n°3 apple ! A ' candy ' as described on the seller's website. Lof of sugar with the good acidity amount and a nice cherry aroma. Flesh is yellow with some red stripes .. crunchy, juicy. A must have :) .

    I have around 5 or 6 missing labels on one of my trees and I'm certain that one is Shrapen Letnij. I'm sure I'll be able to find it now, haha!

      ha, yeah, that is a very odd tasting apple. I mean people must grow it for a reason, so maybe it tastes better elsewhere, or it is mislabeled.

    Yes that is normal for honeycrisp trees to look like that in my experience. They are the most unhealthy trees in my orchard. The leaves on my honeycrisp trees look exactly like yours every single year. I wish I never would’ve grafted them and I’m starting to graft them all over with your varieties. So far I’ve top worked two of them over to cherry crush.

      @@SkillCult one of the cherry crush I grafted this spring has already grown to the size of the honeycrisp trees that I grafted in 2017 and it’s completely clear of any disease at all.

    Its normal for Honeycrisps and they will look like that until it starts producing. Something to do with excess starches and sugars.

      Honeycrisps are in fact the toughest modern apple to grow and get consistent crops. Super frustrating apple. Sweet Tango are top notch apples here in the upper Midwest.

      @@joshanderson1901Thanks for that tip. Honeycrisp was the reason I started growing apples. I figured that I could grow my own apples instead of paying $4.00 /lb. for them from the store. But my Honeycrisp struggled and did not produce.

      The wild muscadines are said to have a musky smell, but not in the taste. I’ve only had the modern cultivars & they are quite tasty. There are different varieties for different uses ex: table/fresh eating, canning/jelly & wine, etc.. they are pretty easy to grow, requiring a yearly pruning for best yield results. A mature plant can produce 60+ pounds per year.

    Question, I've noticed my apples have small brown spots just below the skin when I peel them. Is this bug damage? I've seen small black beetle type bug/earwigs in the worst of them. I live pretty much on a floodplain in NW Oregon so not the best conditions.
    Your apples seem so pristine in comparison.

      Look up bitter pit and see if the pictures look the same. It affects some varieties and not others.

    This might not be your cup of tea but what do you consider the best Macintosh type apple? My kids are big fans of the soft text. I think jonamac is pretty good. Thoughts?
