Why I Love Hunting Trevally, Spearfishing Auckland New Zealand

  • Trevally have always stuck out to me as an extremely interesting fish. They are intelligent and powerful, flighty and perceptive. Over the past couple of years, I have grown an obsession, first contracting it in the coromandel.
Living in Auckland now the species available are more limited, thankfully there are Trev's around! More often than not I'm wondering where the Trev's are at, some of the places are surprising. This video will be covering multiple dives around the Auckland Area.
    1. first spot, North Shore (right of thumbnail)
    2. Whangaparaoa (top left)
    3&4. Waiwera approximate (bottom left)
Some of the reasons why I love these fish are.
    - they taste great
    - they look great
    - they are challenging to shoot
    - they inspire me to dive better
    - I literally have dreams about trevally sometimes
Of course, suitability is a key factor when it comes to spearfishing. Take good shots and avoid injuring fish, no misses, no loses in this video!
End commercial fishing, stop buying the product, encourage others to do the same. It is one of the most powerful things that you can do to support our oceans. The powers that be do not like listening to civilians, but money. Vote with your wallet, get these entities out of our moana so that it can rebuild.
Here is some information regarding the commercial catching of trevally:
    fs.fish.govt.n...
    www.mpi.govt.n...
In the wider Auckland area, this year alone, 1,455,735kg of trevally have been plundered by the fleets of death. Recreational catch represents only a fraction of the pressure, but still always conduct yourself with respect to the environment.
These fish mean a lot to me, and the mass slaughter of these creatures is heart breaking. Most ripped from our ocean and sent overseas to make more profit. We lose and the ocean loses, only greedy bastards are the profiteers of death.
There is no honor in using huge boats to drag giant nets. The methods of today are not the same as the persistent village fisherman, making a living the only way he knows how. What was once a wholesome and somewhat respectable line of work, globalization of the fish market has shifted the balance?
As New Zealanders we compete for fish with the global market. At a price point and in the water. The cost of buying fish is ridiculous given how many we catch in NZ, there is no point selling it to us if an overseas market will pay more, simple economics. The majority of fish caught in NZ are exported, we function like a port for fish. Unload and send off. The number of fish being caught in NZ could be fairly accurately predicted by the demand overseas, this demand influences the fish available in our OWN COUNRTY!!!
When looking at the price of sea food or the ocean and wondering why it's so quiet. Full credit is due to greed, globalization and government goblins who turn a blind eye. Sold to the highest bidder, your ocean, your freedom, your planet, everything that can be exploited will be, unless we wake up and realize that we have the power to achieve anything if we band together.
Ban commercial fishing, at the very least, let's stop exporting fish.

Thank you Wing, I think a lot is lost when music gets played. Commentaries are much more useful imo. I seriously appreciate the kind words, thanks for taking the time. I stoked to have inspired you to get out again, that’s how I feel after watching a good spearfishing video!

@BlueNeoprene Yes, I am based in Okinawa for now. It is a beautiful place to dive with a lot of beautiful fish scenery. When summer time hits, the water gets warm, and life explodes!

Are you diving a certain marine reserve on the second clip? I thought thats what you meant by your friend having special access.

Hi Chong Lee, I would never shoot fish inside of a marine reserve. That would be against so much of what I believe in and stand for.
The area we dove was in the boundary of a military base. Not a marine reserve as such but it gets less fishing pressure than the surroundings. Hope this clears things up!

I will just put the key in a plastic bag, in most situation a cell phone underwater protector, and put that bag in the catch bag.

Once in Hawaii, scuba diving with my Dad. We brought the rental car keys with us in a zip lock bag, you can guess how that went haha. Expensive to replace and terribly inconvenient. I try my best to avoid repeating that experience so usually I just put my key __ ___ ______ ____! Never had my car ran off with but somebody did steal a hooded towel once. Your method sounds solid, I see little chance of that leaking. But I would rather save myself the hassle and space of bringing that with me

@@BlueNeoprene yes, I am also constantly worried that I would lose my key, but normally the cell phone underwater protector has some line that I can tie with the catch bag or other rings, so multiple ties, so far so good :)

At the end of your borderline piracy video, you asked for feedback. But the comments are turned off. So just wanted you to know. I watched the whole video. Took me 2 days. I always watch all your videos in their entirety, don't always comment though, I watch on my TV at home. Hope you're feeling better from the decompression sickness. If I was you, and you do a big trip like that again, I would split the video into part 1 part 2 part 3 etc. 88 min is far too long. Once I get past 15 or 20 min on my videos, I usually split into part 1 and part 2. If I make a 40 min video... ppl will watch 10 min before giving up. So I don't want wasted effort on my part editing video Noone will see. So as long as the title and thumbnail are interesting enough, I feel it works for me splitting into more... shorter videos. That Australian guy Rodneyz Rokkit Kit, often does the same thing.

Hey Kiwi, I am better after the incident. Thank you for bringing it to my attention that the comments were turned off! And for the feedback, really appreciate anything constructive. I can understand the rational as to making multiple videos as opposed to one long one. I personally wanted to try something different instead of making more shorter videos, I enjoyed the process but that one is arguably too long. I believe that people who watch me are most interested in nz based content, so I wouldn’t want to fill my feed with oz vids. Another reason is I have lots more to share, it would have taken me longer to put out multiple vids. I’m ready to move on now, feels like I relived it a few times now haha. Has been a great summer so far and I look forward to sharing more missions. Thanks again Kiwi, great to hear from you as always!
