I was unsure that the 35 minute allocation would allow Mark Gatiss to transfer M.R. James text and, more importantly, atmosphere to film but he did and in such a comfortably unsettling way. I hope the BBC do give him his way and return the woefully neglected and long overdue tradition of classic Ghost Christmas Stories that both Mark and I grew up with. This recounting of "The Tractate Middoth" had both the reminiscent qualities of it's classic forerunners and managed to blend a subtly well placed update that successfully enhanced an already well told story.
I'm fairly certain that the book Mark Gatiss refers to is Peter Haining's "Book of the Supernatural".. It has a reproduction of a magazine spread where MRJ's story is illustrated by a picture of Henry James.
Did I miss John Castle earlier ? Mark Gatis though talented seemed to drone on .He appears to be really eccentric . More Castle and the young actor co star would have been appreciated.
Gah absolutely gutted to miss this Q&A, however the following with Reece Shearsmith and Lawrence Gordon Clarke was equally excellent. Excellent work BFI!
Yes, i would have liked to have heard from John Caste - fantastic actor.
