- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I've enhanced the broadcast recording of 1977 week 4 Cowboys at Cardinals game. The recording begins in the 2nd quarter, but there is a Brent Musberger intro recapping the scoring up to that point. I ran the game through Topaz to upscale, denoise, sharpen and double the framerate, then used Da Vinci Resolve to adjust the color.

The Cowboys Cardinals games 1974-1982 are an underappreciated "rivalry".
True. 1984 they split wins as well and were both playoff contenders.
1970 the Cardinals swept Dallas. Who went to SBV? St.Louis went through a late season collapse
Especially the ones from the 70's. They had some great players back then. Both teams, obviously the 🤠⭐Dallas⭐Cowboys⭐🤠 had Starbauch, Pearson, etc, but the Cardinals had some really great players as well. Not as "well known" or as "flashy" as the Cowboys, but they had some dedicated and tough players. The 70's in my opinion was the absolute best time for🏈🏉NFL🏈Football🏉🏈 and ⚾️🧢MLB⚾️Baseball🧢⚾️. Much better 📺TV📺 Broadcasts like Monday Night Football and the NFL Today were hands down they made today's much more fun to watch. Nowadays it's just awful agenda based bulls**t!!
Agree. The NFC East was so much fun with St Louis. NFL screwed it up.
The story of the 70s, 80s, and 90s Cardinals is a story of a team ground down to the bottom of a quality division over and over. They were capable of jumping up and winning some division games every year. But, in 1977, for example, they went 7-7 for 3rd in the division. The Cowboys went 12-2 and won Superbowl XII. It was only ever a "rivalry" in St. Louis/ Phoenix- never in Dallas. It was only balanced for a few years in the late 90s- early 2000s when Dallas was horrible. Washington/Dallas and Philly/Dallas were totally different.
I absolutely LOVE the Cowboys' blue uniform from the 70's.

The great Vin Scully was known as a baseball analyst but a lot of people in today’s world just doesn’t know that he was an outstanding football analyst 🏈 back, back in the day too, as a little kid I looked forward to his games when they were on in my area, the great Vin Scully & the great Hank Stram, I loved both of them and their football analysis

@domenicdurante966 Correct, Just like Super Bowl XIX was Don Meredith's last game as color announcer, I always thought it was interesting that Tom Bradys first championship in SB XXXVI was Summerall and Maddens last SB together as broadcasters.

I like these blue uniforms, along with the grayish blue pants.
I agree these blue uniforms were beautiful as I loved how the pants clashed with the tops as it was a unique bluish gray color. Number font was awesome too as it had that old west style to it.

@@brianlosure You're right, they are using the "serified" font on their uniforms since 2020 and I appreciate them adopting it as makes the Colts uniforms look a lot better, I just wish they added blue pants to their road uniforms.
@@bryanbradford4708 Yep, it was this season in January 1978 when they beat the Broncos in New Orleans. Pittsburgh would beat Dallas the following year in 1979 and win their last title of the 70s dynasty era in 1980 against the LA Rams.

Great game..... I appreciate how you left the NFL today re-cap of plays at the beginning to catch us up with the missing action. Originally from half-time, it fits perfectly there. Great to see The great names and players back in action. Terry Metcalf was mercurial! Tony Dorsett uber talented...A shame this game was joined in progress and seemingly no complete regional version with the whole game has survived. Not a small feat to enhance this one as you have. The 'original' preserved broadcast has issues, not to mention the sun and shadows of a late afternoon October start in Busch Stadium.
So much for home field advantage! Those refs didn’t give the Cardinals any breaks. Love the crew of Brent, Irv, and Phyllis. That’s all you need; not a panel full of ex-players all dressing alike saying the same things over and over. Love the simplicity of the commercials - thanks for leaving them in, Dave! Alex Hawkins, a poor man’s Don Meredith in the booth. Another tremendous upload, Dave!
Great comments. I agree with the ex player thing. Although Irv Cross played for Philly, he was a real professional. Todays analysts bore me to tears. Alex Hawkins seemed like a fun guy but he fumbled too many words.
I've been saying the same things about today's NFL Broadcasts compared to the 70's. Pre-Game shows like the NFL Today were done so well, and as you said, the team of Brent Musberger, Irv Cross, Jimmy the Greek, Phyliss George/Jayne Kennedy were spot on perfection, and Monday Night Football was another great example of awesome team! Those days were awesome and Monday Nights were epic as well! I really miss those days!

Looking for 1977 St Louis at Dallas! Cardinals beat the cowboys on MNF!! One of my favorite games I am looking for! Grew up a St Louis Cardinals fan!!
So far, there's only a partial copy of that one floating around. I would like to see the entire game myself.

These enhanced games are amazing. I was born in 1975 and grew up a Dallas fan as the Landry era was fading in the 80s, so all these games could never be seen by me. Never got to see Staubach play only remember Danny White and Gary Hogaboom. All I had was NFL films and reading material about those days. It’s great to see them brought to life.
So nice to see a Cowboys team well coached, talented, and that knew how to win.
Its such a trip to watch halftime highlights showing a 30 yard field goal. Ahh the good old days..
Vin had called Game 4 of the NLCS the previous night in Philadelphia on local Dodgers TV and radio as the team clinched the pennant. Had the Phillies pushed it to a fifth game, Vin would have been forced to miss it to honor his CBS commitment.
The stadium with the arches around the top, the simplistic end zone lines, the uniforms. Vin Scullys wit. This was a great time for the NFL. The idea of "Less is More" is lost on modern sports.
It's lost on society in every aspect.
More beautiful work here Dave as I'm just enjoying these commercials and Dallas' uniforms were beautiful, these were their best uniforms as I loved their number font back in the 70s as it had that true old west style to it. The block numbers just made them look ordinary after the 1980 season.

@@shanetrimble9265 I agree it was beautiful, I believe either 1980 or 1981 was the last year they used these uniforms. Definitely no later than 1981 though for sure. Never understood why they even changed them.
1981 was when they switched to the midnight blue-and-neutral silver uniforms with the more conventional block numbers on the road.
@@3243_ The last time the Cowboys wore the royal blue was against the Eagles in the NFC championship game in January of 1981.

Well...I think the consensus is a big Blue Thumbs up to those Cowboys "jinx" Blue jerseys, "metallic Blue" pants, and number font.! I absolutely love them as well. Thank you for preserving the nostalgia.
A team like the Houston Texans or the Tennessee titans should have copied them.

@@romelovesdan ...I think he's saying that the Cowboys never seemed to play well in them. The last game they wore them resulted in another big loss. This time to the Philadelphia Eagles, on January 11, 1981. The Cowboys got boat raced by an Eagles squad that they used to dominate. As a lifelong Cowboys fan, I hated seeing those jerseys because I knew the players had some psychological issue with them and would play worse, as a result.
Always loved that Cardinals helmet as a kid.

Did not know CBS had a Logan's Run TV series. I saw a lot of TV in the '70's and never heard of it. Must have been cancelled after a few shows. Vin was a great announcer period. Of course baseball was no. 1, but football and golf (Masters coverage especially) he was also superb.

Agreed. I don't like the subsequent blues. They aren't in the style of the whites. I don't like when home and aways aren't even of the same design concept.

My theory is that Jerry & Co. will never bring back these unis because Jerry grew up when the Cowboys were wearing those Blue & White uniforms (with the white helmet) we usually see now on Thanksgiving. if he had grown up in the 70s - watching the Cowboys wearing these uniforms - we'd be seeing them again.

Amazing how many less people were on the sidelines back then. Less photographers & media, & less Team and NFL personnel, it’s amazing.

Interesting watching these offenses from the 70s. I've watched a lot of Dave's games, and it's amazing how many times these QBs throw into triple coverage. It's even more amazing that I have no recollection of that being the case. LOL.
Uniforms "popped" back then! The uniforms had sleeves which helped, plus they were not as busy. Gotta love the simplicity. Notice how the screen was not cluttered with statistics and other distractions? I miss these days.
As a Cards fan, I hated this became Dorsett's highlight-reel game

It took me a couple of minutes, where it puzzled me that the small Cardinal running backs of Metcalf and Morris was playing, that it dawned on me that fullback Jim Otis was missing in this game for St. Louis.
Hearing Vince Scully on a football broadcast sounds weird. Scully is the greatest baseball anouncer of all time! I never knew he worked football games in his career.

This was a very good game and typical game between the 2 in the mid 70's. The Cards lost this game then went on to a 6 game winning streak after including a revenge win @ Dallas which was the Cowboys first loss of the season. Then the wheels fell off of the Cards on Thanksgiving day and they didn't recover for 6 years.
Dupree flinched on that pass to Richards, no call. Loved Golden Richards.

I loved the blue uniforms myself but back then the Dallas Cowboys felt as if those dark blue uniforms were bad luck as every time they wore them they lost😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂and the entire team felt the dark blues jinked them😂😂😂😂😂😂 the home team chooses whether they want to wear their white or dark uniforms in the NFL a rule that still stands today

they didn't lose every time they wore the royal blues, but they didn't wear them much and they lost often enough in them for that to become the perception.

That Cardinals O-line, my God....they ALWAYS gave those teams a chance to win....rare to say an O-line carried a team, but they carried that team in the mid- to late-70's.

They never played well in them. It got so bad that, after getting boat raced by the Eagles in the NFC Championship game, in 1981, they never wore them again. The players had a psychological issue(s) with them.

Great game, I remember watching the last few minutes of this one live back in 1977 after the end of another game and the network had changed over to this game. I vividly recall Golden Richards' TD catch in the last minutes. I think Roger Staubach had a point at 1:31:40 when arguing with the ref, he was probably saying it was a forward pass instead of a fumble. Was the Tuck rule in place back then?
Vin Scully stopped broadcasting NFL games because CBS selected Pat Summerall over him to broadcast Super Bowl XVI in 1982. He felt slighted and only broadcasted baseball going forward.
Most of your Dallas players even back in the 70s we’re pretty much household names to even casual fans but the Cardinals of this era early to late 70s we’re not as well known , but I remember most of them fairly well and they have Dallas fits during that time. It was not out of the ordinary to see the Cardinals beat the cCowboys or the Redskins for that Matter. In fact the Cardinals hadn’t done much for years , then in comes Don Cornell . He coached them for 5 years and they were respectable. Cornell’s 1st year was a rebuild and he was already setting himself up for the San Diego head job in his last year of 77 .
Coryell’s 5 year run is is match only by Bruce Airens in modern Cardinal history. Coryells 5 year run records were taking over a last place team for years but his record from 😮73 -77 was as follows ( 4-9-1) , (10-4),** (11-3)**, (10-4)* & (7-7 ) . The Cowboys were the Perennial Contenders in that time , and with the exception of his first year, being swept by the Cowboys , Coryells Cardiac Cardinals beat the Cowboys at least 1 time each year he was coach e including his last lack luster year at 7-7. They had good Coaches like Jim Hanifan , n Joe Gibbs and great players like Banks, Dobler & Dierdorf Jim Hart , the great Mel Gray, and on Defense Gene Stallings, Norm Thompson and Roger Wherli. And last but certainly not the least. One of the most electrifying players of the 70s , my favorite Cardinal of all time , the one and only Terry Metcalf. He was excellent. Very fun to watch , just like the Cardinal /Cowboy clashes of the 70s ! Great Football !

I did not see a clip by Conrad Dobler at 22:47 ! Sometimes the refs were just too quick to call holding or clipping or other penalties in the 70s it seem to me! The pass interference at 1:54:15 called against St.Louis late in the game was very questionable as the ball touched Drew Pearson before Roger Wehrli hit him.
I don’t remember this game being that close at the end.

Prior to the 1974 and 75 season, it was not much of a rivalry between the Cardinals and Cowboys with the exception of the Monday Night Slaughter during the 1970 season
that ironically afterward, the Cards
hit the skids and never recovered.

I only learned about the 'sissy' thing yesterday. From Wikipedia:
In 1977, the NFC Championship Game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys was televised by CBS and covered by play-by-play announcer Vin Scully with Hawkins as color commentator.
Hawkins said that he hoped that the Cowboys would win, because "I've always been a Cowboy fan."
At one point, 35-year-old Dallas quarterback Roger Staubach was shown jogging onto the field, and Hawkins commented to Scully, "Roger runs like a sissy, doesn't he?" To which Scully responded, "Did you wear a helmet when you played?".
Hawkins was arrested during a traffic stop a few days after the championship game, and later was fired by CBS.
