How can you tell them apart just by listening though? Especially in an Aria where you can’t understand anything which makes it pretty much impossible to find out if it’s secular or not.

And in later eras, the sacred/secular thing becomes less of a difference anyway. Like take Mozart’s Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebotes for example. It’s about the first commandment, a religious subject. But it involves staging and costumes, making it a sacred opera, a Singspiel to be specific, which is a German opera genre involving both singing and speaking, hence the name.
