Selling more original art at anime entered conventions can be kinda tricky sometimes. One way I saw some artists I follow that sell original art try to boost sales was having an original art stamp rally at AX this year. Usually I've seen stamp rally's only been used for fan art but seeing an all original artists one was really cool because it made it a bit easier to find more original art in the sea of fan art.
i had a friend who bought two full sized prints from you on saturday, n it rained on us when we were heading home. Let me tell you she was *STRESSING* trying to get them home undamaged because of how absolutely in love with them she was. You're amazing and made her SO happy, thank you!!
I love seeing original art in cons! I'm not into fanart merch much anymore so I'm always more drawn to the unique booths like yours when I'm cruising artist alley! I also love your con vlogs, I can live vicariously through you while it's not con season here 🤌🏻
i sell almost exclusively original merch, but with a retro anime style. So I feel you with people looking more so for fanart of their favourite characters. I was really saved by doing on the spot sketch commissions. People asked for so much fanart and even their OCs. I personally love seeing and buying original works as long as it's my taste, but I understand why most people are just looking for fanart.
I have been absolutely SOAKING up your vlogs! Love the behind-the-scenes stuff, like the doubts & fatigue, the display being held together by tape, the pins misprint and especially the transparency in the pricing breakdown. Thank you so much for sharing.
I'm checking out a con next week, and this got me so pumped. I definitely appreciate seeing a non-fanart booth in a sea of anime, so I'm glad you got to connect with new folks!
I love your videos. I like how you showed that you were sticking your posters onto foamcore. That is something I have been thinking about doing with my table setup. I also use a lot of tape. lol I also like how you give the money breakdown at the end. I think it is really important for other people interested in tabling at artist alley to have realistic expectations. I totally relate to how hard it is to sell original art too. 💜
AHH I saw your booth!!! It was so well put together and awesome + really stood out❤ imagine my surprise when I saw this video ahaha I did like a double take. Glad the con went relatively well!!!!! :D I’m hoping to do this specific con someday in the future so this kind of vlog is super helpful
It's really refreshing to hear a veteran (I'm just starting so you're a veteran from my point of view XD) talk about this side of show/con. The feeling of inadequacy sometimes hit strong and I rarely hear others talk about it. Love your video and you vibe! I'm going to subscribe to follow your journey!
This was such a smart way to build a display board I always seen artists with those fancy printed ones, but this is more practical!! I’ll keep that in mind if I ever do one. Also original art is the best at cons, it seems to do better at smaller events though, but you have lovely designs!
I'm really glad that you made the trek out to Edmonton! I was there on Day 3 and it was SO busy, but I was thrilled to see your stuff in person, as I've been following your IG for over a year now. I actually appreciated that your stuff isn't fan art - I already have so much fan art in stickers, pins, and prints format and it was so nice to get original stuff for a change! I totally understand that you probably won't be at the con next year but I'm grateful for the brief chance that I got to pick up some of your stuff this year.
thank you so so much for coming by to visit me - it was so unexpectedly busy on Sunday, wasn't it! even if I don't make it back to Animethon I will definitely be looking into more markets and events in Edmonton, as I'd like to return sans-smoke and also hit up that wild mall 👀!
@@ArtbyTunaYessss the mall is incredible and I hope you can visit it on your next trip here! I'd suggest looking into Tomo Arts Market - it's relatively new and has only had three iterations but it might be a good place for original stuff. It wasn't overwhelmingly fan art, in any case!
Tunaaaa! I love love love your videos, especially this kind. I am currently editing mine for patreon (I did Metrocon!) but I wanted to say I totally understand when you were talking about how cons are fickle. Your work is so awesome and if I ever saw you at a con, I would absolutely attack your booth 😂 but your set up is AWESOME and your work is also so awesome.
I'm also not an anime artist but I've been thinking of going to a Con with my art and wondering if it will be worth it...Thank you for your insight on the subject!!! Love your vids!
3:20 Oh… I was typing a comment and was not prepared for side parting Tuna… it looks sooo different, but also cute and fresh… 🤩 And the paaants… I just love your whole style…
Tuxedo cat LOVE! Also I absolutely LOVE your tattoos (especially the raccoon), have you ever or would you consider doing a tattoo tour? Would love to know if you designed any. Also thank you for your honesty on market niches and fanart vs original art
I have a dilute tortie cat named Luna and nicknamed Tuna!! If you ever make more breeds of cats I’d definitely jump on pins and stickers in her breed or grey color even!!!
dilute torties are sooo gorgeous, you are lucky!!! I will definitely be doing more "find your cat" type merch and I will make a note to add some grey-ish ones for you!!
hi!! I illustrated it digitally and printed it on sticker paper, which I stuck to foam core, and then cut around! super simple and my favourite table decoration!!
@@ArtbyTuna thank you for letting me know. I appreciate your time. I am browsing which would work well for me so this has been really helpful. Thank you x
Applause for focusing more on original work. You're really good. Fan art isn't the best approach for original longevity. It's often intellectual property that's being ripped off. Fan art doesn't challenge the art world like original content does and should. Keep creating and focusing on original content. I'd rather make $10 doing a show off of my original ideas than $10k selling fan art. Stay true to yourself!
@@taramcintyre3782 no prob! I got them from a local retail shop here, Clubcard. if you google "wooden card rack" you will probably find options near you! I cannot recommend this one though, it's so hard to put together and take apart, but if you do go for it, do not paint it. it was a mistake😂😂
New subscriber. It's wonderful to have this view of the other side of the convention booth. Thank you so much for sharing the experience. Also, lived in Edmonton for college. It's definitely an "acquired taste" of a town.
Noooo - keep doing your original art!!!! Fan art isn’t even that cool when people are selling and profiting off other people’s original characters. Honestly, I’m not a fan of fan art (I’m sure I’m in the minority) but it’s not my thing and awesome original art like yours definitely is!!! Just my gut reaction but you do what you gotta do to keep food on the table ya know!!!
thank you so much for the reassurance. I also feel this way in my gut, and I love what I do so I wouldn't want to feel like I had to make compromises to do it!!
thank you so much!! I have a few strategies, one is talking to friends/seeing where they are exhibiting and making notes to apply for next year. I also visit many I come across in my own city to see what they are like and if I might fit in. lastly I do searching like "edmonton anime con" for example and see what events come up on google. it is something you must be proactive about, and plan months in advance!!

The supportive boyfriend 😫 how sweet. Give him a hug for me. I’m actually crying right now. Never in my life will I have any sort of love like that

I live in Albuquerque, and all the left turns I make keep getting me in trouble.
now im curious about the chairs haha
Healed with my pancakes XD
Where'd you get your yellow display rack for your prints?
It’s from Clubcard and I painted it. But I really hate it 😂
being able to split an uber must have been a nice financial suprise haha
Where do you get your pins made pls? 🙏
this answer is available on my FAQ! artbytuna.com/faq
Can I ask what drawing tablet you use please? ❤
hi Sue! my tablet is an iPad Pro 2021 w/Apple Pencil (gen2). I can also recommend the Huion and Wacom brands as I have used both in the past as well!!

please please please where do u get those stands laser cut!
Which stands do you mean? The yellow wooden shelves? ☺️
@@ArtbyTuna sorry yes I mean the yellow wooden shelves. I have a diy one made out of cardboard I’ve been looking everywhere for the wooden ones! ☺️

What kind of Epson printer do you use?
ET-8500 😊

YOU PAY 33% TAX IN CANADA??
Sales tax is 5-12%. Income tax is about 25%. The 33% you’re thinking might be a reference to merchandise cost.

I think it's worth a try!!! depending on your style, anime con might not be best, but a general pop culture event tends to be much more welcoming!
