- Is cooking with a cast iron skillet healthy or safe? Mr. Cast Iron says no, it is not for certain people with a particular condition. Why? Because cast iron leaches iron into the food as we cook with it. And, yes, it is healthy for specific reasons, especially for those deficient in iron. Teflon is unhealthy and can cause problems if chipped or heated too high. Not so with my Lodge cast iron skillet or other cookware like ceramic. Another thing to is how we cook in cast iron so it is healthy. The type of food and oil we use makes a difference.

I think some studies are just done to panic people. You would probably get more iron from red meat or spinach than you would from cooking in cast iron. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Mike. Stay safe and stay warm

Spot on with every point Mike. I just will not use teflon coated pans anymore, and with older pans you can see where the coating has worn away quite easily, where has that gone? We now have 2 Lodge pans and 1 Victoria, these get used daily now, and we feel better for it. 😀

@@jerrym3261 We have the Lodge Blacklock skillets, and we purchased these because they are lighter and have longer handles than the normal Lodge skillets. I nearly ordered the 12” Blacklock 2 weeks ago, and then heard of Victoria. Very well designed, the handle is much nicer to hold than the Lodge, and the main point was in Australian dollars, $159.00 for the Lodge Blacklock, $71.00 for the Victoria, great price and quality. The Victoria is heavier than the same size Blacklock pan as well if this is a concern.
@@raywise Thanks for your reply. Weight isn't much of a concern for me. The reason I will sometimes use a lighter skillet is that it changes heat quicker, slows cooking quicker. I haven't seen or held a Victoria so kind of a mystery. I have seen and held Blacklocks and I think I'm not interested in having one because they are much different from what I'm used to. Even though Blacklocks are made in the US and Victorias are imported from Columbia, a Blacklock 12 is $80US and a Victoria 12 can be had for $25US so, bigger price difference than for you. My interest in Victorias came about because I'm looking at Ecuador with thoughts of moving there. Moving and importing the cast iron I have doesn't make sense if I can get Victoria that is made so close to Ecuador, might even make a trip to the Victoria factory. I have been to the Lodge factory in South Pittsburg, Tennessee a few times. I like seeing a lot of cast iron in one place.
Thank you so much for this explanation ! I always thought I had heard that iron skillets and cookware give you iron in your body and that that was a good thing so thanks for explaining it all. I just have a brand new cast-iron skillet and my son is going to season it for me.

Thanks for putting this out Mike. About 1 in 300 folks have hemochromotisis, with it being most common for people of Irish ancestry. My doctor really wants me to quit cooking in my cast iron as my iron levels are through the roof. Good information my friend!

I clicked thumbs up but, my heart goes out to you. Cast iron brings a lot of joy to my life. I'd hate to have to stop using it or have a dark shadow over it if I was using it. I don't always do what doctors tell me to do so, there is that.

Very good points Mike but how many people have the reaction to Iron? I hate Teflon and I think I have finally convinced Rhonda that its bad. But what do I know I used to lick the lead based paint off the window sills and lick rusty nails .

Great question, Jim! Yes, a well-seasoned skillet doesn’t release as much as one that’s not. But the thing is that it doesn’t release excessive amounts of iron, so for the majority of people, it’s not going to be an issue!

I have a Cermamic Coated Cast Iron.
About Non-Stick, most new Non-Stick Pans are PFOA Free so it should affect your health much, tho there are environmental concerns in regards to the process to making Non Stick Pans, so in that sense Cast Iron is still better

I thought it sounded a little smart alecky but then I looked over at just the few pieces of my cast iron that are out. How long do you want to live if you're not using cast iron? I'd take a little chance. I like my cast iron.

If you keep your cast iron properly seasoned it will not develop rust spots or rust. That would be a metallic iron which is not good for you even without the homocroma... that is neglect on the cooks part and if rust is present should never be cooked with til spot or cast iro. Is cleaned and reseasoned

That’s a great question, Rick! Yes, the better it is seasoned lessens the amount that can leach into the food.
Cast iron - most people could use more iron. That condition he mentions is very rare. Check with your Doctor if you’re worried.
But, I never use it with a chili, pasta sauce, or anything with tomatoes. For that, we have the stainless steel Dutch oven.

@@MrCastIron I'll be on the way to Muscle Sholes Al. tomorrow for a cast iron sale Friday, back home for a Saturday sale and another in Atlanta on the 8th. I live north of Chattanooga so that will be the farthest I've traveled so far. The closer ya get to the Mississippi River you'll see pieces that are rare in East Tennessee. I collect nice old pieces mainly from 1900 - 1962ish. I put them in electrolysis and re-season them for future generations. I finished a Wagner high base waffle iron today that was patented in 1910. I would rank it 9.5 out of 10. I'll have to pick up more Lodge skillet seconds to turn into spatulas on the way back through South Pittsburg.. The grilling crowd go for the cast iron spatulas and the sale of those pays my way. (well it helps) Is eating from cast iron safe? Oh heck no unless you want to end up like me. lol

I'm a little anemic, so cooking with cast iron works out for me. I don't use teflon crap cookware. Cast iron, stainless steel, ceramic and stoneware only.

the truth is anything you are cooking or storing food in is leaching into the food but iron is generally good as compared to all other cooking surfaces

So sorry. You are talking about mineral iron similiar to vitamins. Not metallic iron !! I use avocado oil higher smoke temp olive oil, Virginia or extra Virginia is ok also. But iron will not leach out !!!!
if i had the condition where i couldnt use my cast iron, i would probably use a ceramic cast iron or a stainless steel cookware.

He is miss understanding. Cast iron does not release iron. He is talking about mineral iron like in veggies and meats. Cast iron does not leach or get metallic iron into your food or body !!!!

Now that we are all in agreement on that I'm sure. What I've read is the top 3 safest skillets are, Cast Iron, carbon
steel, and stainless steel. Common denominator is, none of the 3 are coated with any chemicals. Makes sense.
