I didn’t think of Jo as queer or asexual I think she was unique and independent and who better for her than a professor who is highly educated and liberal minded? I think she needed the right “fit” and perhaps Alcott wrote that as her own wishes or maybe she didn’t want her protagonist to have her ending. I also think there were plenty of women in the 1800s that were political and subversive to the idea of marriage because it really was something that you HAD to do since women couldn’t own property. Women had no rights but they fought it - women like Emily Dickinson - the poet - she never married either and was a feminist of her time. I find strong women or that era to be extremely interesting because to go against the grain was so extremely difficult if not impossible. I also think women since the dawn of time had these thoughts for betterment, I think voicing them was what was NEW. I take the Bronte sisters to also be feminists, same era. Charlotte had to write in to the publisher under a male name just to get published. I’m glad those days are over but today we have our own struggles of trying to be it all and do it all and there’s still backlash against those who don’t marry or don’t have children. It’s not easy being a woman but I have to say that women are so much more complex and wonderful than men. That’s so biased to say and probably not true but it’s my personal opinion. Lol
I think there are several reasons why Amy wouldn’t go back when her sister was dying. For one, the travel time was so much longer than in modern times. But also, when women married back then, they basically removed themselves from their birth families and then attached themselves to their husband and his family. So for her to leave her husband, and travel alone for days and days, wouldn’t have been seen as appropriate or even something to consider as an option.
And when you read at the end that Alcott refused to married because she didn’t want to limit herself to that life, that might be why she didn’t have Amy return. Another example of what marriage can do to a woman. Know what I mean? If Amy came back, Jo could see a woman who had the flexibility to go wherever she wanted whenever she wanted. And that wasn’t Alcott’s experience or her message.
I'm reading Little Women for the first time as a 35 year old married military wife without kids & I find Meg's chapters are SO relevant! Marriage, moving, the changes, then balancing kids & husband towards the end. They aren't the most interesting but I definitely find them the most relatable.
@@novelsandlattes you have got to watch the 2019 version! I watched both 1994 and the latest adaptation and I loved both but the newest stole my heart!
If you plan on reading more 1800s books sometime soon I definitely recommend Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Both of those novels are TIMELESS and AMAZING!
So I’ve been a little women fan for a long time and I was excited to see the new movie but also a bit apprehensive. At first I didn’t know how to feel about the story jumping around but by the end I thought it was absolutely GENIUS. You have to see the 1994 adaptation for sure.. Also I loved that little tidbit about Louisa May Alcott at the end of your video, very interesting!
I bought Anne of green gables in that edition and it's my favourite cover books. It also came yesterday as a birthday gift and i'm super excited. I also bought Autoboyographie bc i saw it in your channel. And i'd like to read little women in this month too. 🥰
The book is based on the authors real life and experiences, she just changes the names of the girl. I have visited Orchard house, where she lived. They told me there that Louisa actually did not finish the book during her life or publish it. After she died, her sister finished the book and had it published. So I’ve always felt like that’s why Jo ends up with the professor in the end. Because that’s just the way things were back then. I’m so glad you enjoyed this book, I’ve read it three times since middle school and my mom and I watch the Winona Ryder version every single Christmas. The original black and white movie is definitely long and boring, I wouldn’t bother lol
Layna Lamons are you sure is this one the one that she didn’t finish (little women)? Because there are others books that continue the story of the March sisters and they are by Louisa May Alcott. Are you sure is not one of the other books in the series: little men, jo’s boys or good wives.
Loved hearing your thoughts on this! Classics like this are so intimidating for me because of the archaic language and old-speak, but I’ll have to give this one a go! Great vid! 😊
Gabby, this book was a favourite of my mums. Maybe I should try to read it but I did see the movies years ago. My mum was 92 when she died last year. She had dementia and other health problems. I used to put the dvd on for her. It brings back so many memories and I smile
I loved this video! I so appreciate your vulnerability and honesty in how you felt about this book and what it meant to you. I’ve seen all the adaptations, but this newest one with Saoirse Ronan is my absolute favorite! It’s the richest and most beautiful of all the movie adaptations. I have been avoided reading the book for the reasons you mention in your video, but I’m finally going to tackle it this year! Xoxo
I just ordere that exact edition because I'm in love with it and I haven't even read it yet. I'm dying to see the newest movie but want to wait until I read the book. Love your content, by the way!
You definitely have to watch the 90s version! It’s my favorite but I love the new version too. If I’d seen the current one first it’d probably be my favorite but I have so many memories watching the 90s version as a kid with my sister that it’ll always be the best to me ❤️
I’ve actually never finished reading Little Women. I borrowed it from the library many many times but because I never finished it in the allotted time, I always had to return it. But your video makes me want to finish it and vlog my experience
This vlog reminds me of an episode from friends where Joey reads the book and spoiled by rachel saying Beth dies and beth becomes sick. Then joey puts the book into the fridge.
I didn't finish the blog bc I haven't read Little Women but THANK YOU for saying and informing the viewer before any spoilers!!!! Will be back when Little Women had been read. :)
I highly recommend checking out the book ‘Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters’. It’s nonfiction, kind of a biography of the book and its author, especially how her book related to her life. Several times during the last few minutes of your blog, I kept thinking “She needs to read this!”. 🙂
I love little women, I did the audible book and loved it but now I want to pick up the book but can't decide which version I want, I feel like if I get tye puffin bloom edition that I will have to get the other books in that set as well lol.
I wanted Jo and Laurie to be together in the 1994 Little Women but I didn’t want them to be together in the 2019 version. 😂 Funny how that works. I think it has to do with the chemistry between the actors that decides that. Anyway I didn’t think I’d like any version more than the 1994 but I loved this recent one with ALL of my heart. I also love Winona Ryder as Jo.
1949s Little Women is my favorite because it was the first adaptation I saw but Greta Gerwigs adaptation is a very close second! The best miniseries adaptation is definetly the 2017 BBC production!
I just started at a pilates gym where I live. Week 2 and I'm ready seeing results. Love this video. I've been listening to Abbi Glines Losing the field and reading a little on kindle unlimited. Plus keeping up with school work. It feels good to be back.
So I already know the story, so I decided to watch this video as I was reading the book and I kid you not. Right as the part in the video happened where Jo is upset because she can’t go on the trip, I reached the exact part
I just finished Little Women three days ago and I’m just a bit older than you so definitely not part of the “ Read it in elementary school and re read it x number of times type “ I too have only read the book after watching the 2019 movie and watching the play in theatre this past Xmas Eve . I thought I would find out what really happened in the story . I know that all movies and plays more or less change the details . I made myself read the entire book before watching the 1994 movie which I will do next week . It s interesting how different editions of the book differ in length . I read an e - book version that is 578 pages and I nearly lost motivation to finish because it was so long I’m glad I didn’t seek the 700 + page one . I wonder if some parts from the shorter editions are cut . For example you said that on page 578 was about Jo telling Laurie she didn’t want to marry him . That scene was in shorter editions but on an earlier page . 578 was the end of the book for me . There was another even shorter edition I saw at Chapters with the mini posters from the 2019 movie and cover page of Jo from the new movie as well. That edition was 480 pages . I guess it’s similar to how when PBS airs it’s British dramas the scenes are cut so the episodes is 10 min shorter . This way , people in North America think they are getting the full episode but technically they are not . I enjoyed your video greatly . I am a reader but not as intense as you . One book I would recommend if you like the 2019 movie is The official movie companion for Little Women . The hardcover book shows how the movie was made and the pictures are beautiful. It is about $25 USD to buy or the library might have it . The author is Gina McIntyre .
Yes and I will forever call these movie versions the Winona Ryder version and the Emma Watson versions! Winona was so good at playing Jo you must see it!!
I normally hate when you tubers add music montages. It’s usually terrible music and annoying. But your choices for this blog were amazing! They fit in so well and put me in a “Little Women” mood.
Some things didn't match up to the book exactly, but my favorite is the three part miniseries by Masterpiece. And I agree, it really bothers me that Laurie ended up with Amy. It seemed like he just settled with her, and I thought he could have at least branched out. Have you seen that movie The Family Stone? It's kind of that same sibling switcheroo situation that makes me really uncomfortable and heartbroken.
The reason why Amy didn’t go to see Beth was because they never told her. Beth didn’t want her sister to know. She wanted her to do what she was doing and not worry. I also feel that she isn’t a-sexual she is a-romantic or both. The reason why I think this is because she never wanted to get married and that’s not a-sexual that’s a-romantic. But I feel like she might be both.
My book version Amy is 12, even with the 3 years later started part 2, she'd only be 15, how was she able to get married and Meg at 16 (in my book), had to wait til she was 20?
I loooooved the Greta gerwig film and it almost tied with the Winona Ryder one but that one is from my childhood and probably can’t be replaced lol. Plus Christian Bale as Laurie is just perfection. I’ve seen the oldest adaption and it’s good as well just old school lol
I watched the 2019 movie two and a half times ( the third time around the people I watched it with didn’t want to finish it ) , watched a play this past Xmas of this story , am reading the movie companion book to the 2019 movie , just finished the 578 page book , and next week will finally watch the 94 movie after which I will say bye to this story . I wonder why some versions have 500 and something pages while others have over 700. I got the 578 page one with the light green cover with the sketch of the 4 sisters . It’s a good thing I didnt pick the one on Apple Books which Is 739 pages , I would have not survived . It’s a good book but not a page Turner .

I love your vlogs! They are so fun to watch! Spoilers.... I don't like Amy and Laurie together. I just don't see it. I agree they have more of a sibling relationship.
I’m still so in love with that cover of Little Women 😭
I didn’t think of Jo as queer or asexual I think she was unique and independent and who better for her than a professor who is highly educated and liberal minded? Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Susan Sarandon. Cant get any better.

Little Women is on my top three list of favorite classics, I love it so much and Jo will always be my favorite
Okay, this cover of Little Women is genuinely beautiful! And I may *just* come back to this video after I've read the novel myself.
The book is based on the authors real life and experiences, she just changes the names of the girl. I have visited Orchard house, where she lived. You might want to try Jane Austen's books, especially Pride and Prejudice and Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South, both novels written in the 1800's.

I’m so glad you liked the book. The new adaptation is the best thing I’ve seen with my eye balls.
I knew what happened to Beth because I’ve seen the movie a bajillion times, but it still had me sobbing, and I just went to my sister and hugged her
LOVE this VLOG... I’m looking forward to reading this next month

Such a cozy vlog

Isnt that called breaking the fourth wall when the author addresses/acknowledges the reader directly
this was so cute and cozy!! now i want to read little women
Just ordered my copy!!! I’ve never read a classic before so I’m kinda intimidated
Girl the Elizabeth Taylor one is the best adaptation!! It might be cause I grew up on that one but it’s so good🙌
The reason why Amy didn’t go to see Beth was because they never told her. Beth didn’t want her sister to know. She wanted her to do what she was doing and not worry.
I also feel that she isn’t a-sexual she is a-romantic or both. The reason why I think this is because she never wanted to get married and that’s not a-sexual that’s a-romantic. But I feel like she might be both.

ok that's me gone at 4 mins 26 secs to order Little women I will be back lol and I'm def ordering that edition ....so cute !
The version I have is 460 pages but the font is tiny!
Btw, I probably told you this already but I listened to Dante & Aristoltle and loved it!!
I loooooved the Greta gerwig film and it almost tied with the Winona Ryder one but that one is from my childhood and probably can’t be replaced lol. Plus Christian Bale as Laurie is just perfection. I’ve seen the oldest adaption and it’s good as well just old school lol
I also haven’t read this book but I loved the 2020 version of Little Women 😊
Are both the books in this edition or just the one book that is in the movie?
Please watch the old version of Little Woman with June Allison it my all time favorite!
Part 1 and 2 were published as two separate books so that’s why I always felt why Part 2 started a little slow. Alcott wanted to end the book with her unmarried but they wouldn’t let her so that’s why she ends up with the professor, she didn’t want her to end up with Laurie because that’s what readers wanted and she wanted the ending to be intentionally unsatisfying, not to satisfy anyone.
Umm actually I also want to read this book so I wanna to know it cost you how much
I think you'd really like this video here in UA-cam: "Comparing Every Version of Little Women".
Fantastic work they show how the same novel has been translated to the actual times and women roles in movies.
I read Little Women a long time ago but decided to listen to the audio before going to see the new movie. I agree that the other women don't have as much personality as Jo, but I relate to Meg more because I got married at 22 and had my first baby 6 weeks after my 24th birthday - so I relate to her life path more. I hope I have a little bit more personality than that though haha!
After listening to Little Women I discovered that there's 2 other books, Little Men and Jo's Boys. I liked both but Little Men was better and I loved seeing what Jo and the professor did with their home for boys and the relationships between her and all the boys. Jo's Boys was more like a very long epilogue to Little Men.
I first read the book in the ‘70s and even through multiple rereadings, I’m still not over Amy and Laurie. It’s just plain wrong.
THANK YOU! SOMEONE SAID IT
I’m so confused on why I cried on some parts😭😭
I don’t really think Jo was an asexual or gay character. It’s possible of course, but I think back then there was only one type of way to be married and Jo didn’t want that. As opposed to now there’s many ways of being in a marriage without any sacrifices and it enriches your life. I honestly feel it’s over examining the book with that speculation and examining it from a modern time frame vs the time frame it was in.
Hi, just have a quick question abot the book. :) Is this edition good quality (cover, paper etc.)? I ordered it from internet and it suposed to be a gift for friend, so i am little worried. :P Tnx 😊
The Christian Bale/Wyona Ryder adaptation is absolutely amazing and really touched my heart. Hi was my favourite too along with Beth. Never read the book though.
Im going to get this book for my 35th birthday which is like in 7 weeks 🙃 until then ill just watch the film
hello! Does this version of the book include the second book (good wives) considering the amount of pages compared to other versions?
Sarah Tan no it only includes little women there’s just a part one and a part two and they are each 300-400 pages
@@gabbyreads part I in most books is referred as 'little women' and part II is referred as 'good wives'.
Actually yes it has both parts. That's why this edition has a bigger binding.
Readers and FRIENDS fan know about this book
Me taking a little over a month to read little women watching her read this so fast like 😶
