This song holds so much emotion for me, probably more so than any other of theirs... And it has no words. But there are no words to describe the emotion either.
If there has ever been an argument on who the unofficial fifth member of Phish is, CK5 put that debate to rest at 6:44 by manipulating the lights to spell PHISH. Unbelievable.
Such an aptly named band. Fishman is absolutely the fucking key to why this is the best live band in the history of noise, crowds and guitar strings. If you have ever seen or heard a show where Jon Fishman wasn’t absolutely rock fucking solid, come at me. The man never lifts a stick over his shoulder blades.
He's a freak of nature. Unreal stamina with the ability to be spot on repetitious for sustained time periods. Also yes never lifts his arms very high, dude is a bulldog.
On this particular night, at this time, on that one measure, with that one note, creating whatever they did with First Tube like I just watched them do. All I can say is. YES. And be thankful I'm aware of incredible musicians like these 4.
I had searched and searched for this tune and I had it here in my Faves all along.😮 There's a couple of good covers out there too! A girls band as I recall.
Anyone saying phish can't write a hook clearly didn't listen to this song or even listen to phish. A hook isn't necessarily lyrics, listen to the riff/theme played by Trey throughout out the tune til the final jam, that's the definition of a hook right there. First tube might be the ultimate instrumental tune anywhere
It’s actually just one dude, Chris Kuroda who is the light guy. I’m sure there are lots of people that help with setting up the rig and all but he is considered the 5th member of the band.
I read in a Rolling Stone magazine about 10 years ago or so, that Trey Anastasio was at the time on, or talking about his recovery from crack addiction. Cant really remember for sure, I just remember it was about crack. I always figured he was into H, and it turns out I was right. Found this - forum.opiophile.org/archive/index.php/t-32829.html BTW, I'm not even a Phish fan, but First Tube has always impressed me. Great groove, and melody throughout the whole song.
The thing that kills me about Phish is that they are such virtuoso musicians, but can't write a hook to save their lives. This is what separates them from the GD. Hunter and Garcia knew how to write a hook. How many Phish tunes are we gonna be hearing on classic rock radio 20 years from now? NONE. But I respect these guys to death, even though I would never pay a dime to see them play live.
Aside from crediting them as great musicians, you don't seem to know very much about Phish or the Grateful Dead. FIRST - You'll hear as many Phish songs on the radio in 20 years as you have from the Dead - since the Dead never had radio success either. The Dead has only 1 Top 40 Hit in their entire career (Touch of Grey, of course) - whereas Phish already has 2 Top 40 Hits and they are still putting out albums. (Jambands never do well on radio due to the 4-minute song format.) SECOND - you obviously don't know anything about Phish if you "respect them . . but wouldn't pay a dime to see them live." Phish is a live band and you will never understand them until you have seen them live - old recordings on youtube do not convey what Phish does live. Nobody who spends time listening to Phish prefers their studio work over what they can do live. They are masters of tension-and-release and crowd energy and their live shows are legendary because of their incredible improvisation. If you really respect them, you would attend a show to learn what they are really about. (You won't regret it!) Think of all the great rock bands you respect - how many of them have thousands of fans who have seen over 100 shows or who have thousands of fans follow them around the country to see every show on a tour? The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Queen, U2, G-n-R, Nirvana, Pearl Jam? . . take your pick - none of them have a live performance legacy like Phish. THIRD - Hooks? Seriously? Phish has dozens of incredible hooks - they are much more of a "hook" band than the Dead ever was. You really should dig into Phish a little further because you clearly have not heard much of their music and are missing the point by avoiding live shows. For hooks, start with: Tweezer, Chalkdust Torture, Down With Disease, Free, Punch You In the Eye, Julius, Simple, Sand, Story of the Ghost, Character Zero . . .
This song holds so much emotion for me, probably more so than any other of theirs... And it has no words. But there are no words to describe the emotion either.
I agree that the feeling in this song runs deep. I get the chills every time.

So good i had to watch it twice. For those who have not seen First Tube live... I feel bad.
I saw Slightly Stoopid cover this. It was unbelievable.
Faces were melted.
I love, LOVE, Mike Gordon. But goddamn if he doesn’t always look like a chartered accountant who got up at his kid’s Bar Mitzvah to jam with the band.
Thanks harpua. 🐟

I was at this amazing show never a disappointment!
Me too!! I was on way too many mushrooms and this song really put me over the edge. I threw up in the stairwell afterwards. It was so great.
I had searched and searched for this tune and I had it here in my Faves all along.😮

I love Trey's guitar g-d moments! When he holds the guitar above his head at the end!
They just played a quick few seconds during the Rams game!
Best Japanese band ever!

Or they havn't listened to sand or carini just to name a few with great hooks.
Its a beautiful thing
Yes it tis... Semper Fi brother
Exuberant. Nothing else comes to mind except the people running the lights wondering if there is anything else they could possibly do for effects,
It’s actually just one dude, Chris Kuroda who is the light guy. I’m sure there are lots of people that help with setting up the rig and all but he is considered the 5th member of the band.
0 dislikes. hell yes. haters gon' hate, but they can do it somewhere else.
Great catch Brother !!!Thanks so much for all the videos!!!Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not a Phish fan really, but I fuck with First Tube
It says Phish at 6:47
Wow, Page really gets lost at 2:37, thinks they're in the outro already.
How do you get lost? It's only one chord the whole damn song.
Dude, you are the fucking man!

The radio does not define what timely music is.
You write this on a song with a KILLER hook. Irony..
