One important thing that canceled out the size of my 55lb golden when dealing with children was that she knew they were small children and treated them accordingly. She would army-crawl up to babies and toddlers in a deliberate attempt to be gentle. The only time she got rambunctious with children was when they were 5-7 and were playing rough with her. She knew her size and acted accordingly.

I have seen this in my labs as well. Incredible dogs. I made the mistake of getting, a, um, ''protection'' type dog once. Mistake? Well yeah. I had to watch her like a hawk around people. My Labs? The only danger is they get too worked up and might jump on someone. If my kids went out back, my labs would literally walk every single step. And would run themselves crazy if the two spilt up.
My protection dog, I could trust around my kids, and I knew no uninvited visitors would be allowed. Ever. But, other neighborhood kids, especially those that are like Dennis the Menace, who might taunt the dog or worse, no way. Thats when my Rottie would adjourn to her crate. Never had any problems, but then we were vigilant. And yes, when my Rottie died, I cried, and cried and cried.

Same with my Golden, He's 70 lbs (European hunting/field bred), and he is so good at matching his energy level and how carefully he moves, to both kids and elderly people! We have 5 godchildren between 1½ and 10 years old, and he acts differently with each of them. Same with my grandmother, who turned 90 this year - he's a lot more careful with her, and tends to stay next to her whenever she's around, and allows her to lean on him, which he never accepts with anyone else, except children. He also absolutely refuses to take toys from children, even if they try to hand them to him :) Meanwhile he's the most rambunctious moron with those of my friends who have dogs, and like to play a little rough with him :D

This is one selection you can't go wrong. There is a good reason both breeds are popular - because they're two of the best breeds going. If you like gentle, lovable, goofy, family friendly pups that will always love you back while providing a ton of laughs, and you like medium to large dogs, I think these are the two best breeds going.

They never left my side, and always greeted hubby when he came home, even if he had only gone up the road to get my medication. ❤❤❤❤❤❤. We had them cremated when they crossed the rainbow bridge, in 2017 and 2018, so that we could always have them with us. I still miss them, every single day. I would definitely get another one (or two), but not yet. We’re not ready for the commitment and there are things we still wish to do, that we deferred when our boys were alive. On the other hand, I once had a Golden Retriever that never made the same mistake twice. He was very easy to train. Currently, I have an Aussie/Lab mix (my second one). Love this mix!!! As for the cost of a dog (my mixed breeds are "mutts" and never have cost much initially), I've always been prepared to spend the money on toys, vets, and quality food. Also, remember, all dogs have their own personality....don't expect "Rex" to act the same as "Duke" just because they are the same breed.

I was tickle pink to see that you did a lab vs retriever video!!! My lab was the love of my life! She was sweet as sugar and smart as a whip. She would round everyone up for bed and wake everyone up in the morning. She would get the newspaper every single day! One day my sister in law’s small house dog got out and ran off. I had my dog Tara at her house that day when her little dog got out. Tara could tell from our voices and reactions that there was unrest because of this. Tara kept looking at me with her tongue hanging out and I finally said go get her! Tara ran after the little thing and put her paws on her and forced the little dog Down who stayed and understood not to move! It was nothing short of spectacular “rounding up”! I never trained her to go get another dog and it only took one time to show her how to get the paper before she learned to get it every day ! However, it wasn’t a question. I didn’t ask her if she wanted to get the paper otherwise she would keep looking at me. I had to say go get the paper. She would also babysit babies. She would sit by their crib or sit by their play-pen.

The lab needed knee (ACL) surgery. Bam! $5000 (with all the accessories, consultations, and medications) by the time she was through that.
Our cat used to snuggle up with the golden on cold nights, and the dog defended the territory from other, interloping felines.

We have one of each and you are spot on regarding cleaning up the fur. Our chocolate lab's fur gets everywhere and its coarse and pokey when it gets in clothes or blankets. Its much more work cleaning up her shorter hair than it is our golden's longer hair! Our lab also has WAY more energy than our golden. Its not even a competition, and our lab is 12 while the golden is 3. Labs are fantastic dogs and I love ours dearly, but in my experience at least, labs are a lot more work to exercise!

Reply about living longer. For past 3 or 4 goldens we have intentionally waited longer to get our Golden girls fixed. Think we have found that waiting longer to let hormones work longer before getting them fixed helps with hip displasia or patellar luxation or other orthopedic problems with Goldens. Ie. Letting them keep their natural hormones longer helps with better development of hips and knees, etc. Not scientific, but just what we have personally observed, and think there has been a difference. Some of our early pure breed goldens suffered from hip displasia, and more so with knee problems with patelas (knee joint tendons) not growing and working right. Past few goldens we have waited till about 2 years old before getting them fixed and hips and knees seem better. Subjective but FYI.

I’ve re-homed an 8 month old retriever (my fourth). He was a ‘lockdown dog’ and wasn’t socialised as a young puppy, he also was never walked on a leash. I’ve had him a year now and we’ve pretty much cracked the walking. However he’s still very reactive to most other dogs (especially small breeds); he’s much less reactive to other retrievers and labradors….seems like he recognises his ‘cousins’! He’s improving slowly but I’d be interested to hear of anyone’s similar experiences and especially suggested solutions!🇬🇧

Both are great dogs. I have a golden and I had a flatcoat. IMO, the flat coat is the better dog of these three because they have the best of all. Heart, mind, a youthful attitude and fantastic with kids from infants to teens. My niece learned to stand and to walk with the help of our flatcoat, and while I suspect out golden would have put up with the fur pulling, the climbing, etc, I don’t think my golden would have invited her to hold on to her tail for balance and take very small steps…or throw themselves between a falling toddler and any objects so they only get a mouthful of fur instead of impacting a chair leg or a fireplace bench. Our flatcoat did both. However, strangers seem to love/trust goldens more than flatcoats. Everyone comes up to our golden wanting to pet her. Our flatcoat would have loved that, but people tended to shy away more. We’ve taken to calling it golden privilege.

I've been rescuing/ adopting Golden/Lab x GSD mixes for the past 40 years. I look for a gold color with a black nose marking, and a Lab type head. I've hit the jackpot three times, with a very sweet, energetic dog that is very easy to train, has a great distinctive personality, and terrific with animals and people. As a side effect, they have been strongly prey driven with squirrels and rabbits, and will chase cats, [and anything that runs] but not as prey (to try to kill). They seem to have the it intelligence of a GSD with the personality of a Lab (rather than a Golden)... and they are handsome dogs ... that glow in the sun, and shed profusely in the house. The first two had AKC titles and were therapy dogs. The current dog is wonderful with people but too exuberant and noisy to be a therapy dog.

Wish we could have one of each. Both breeds are known for admirable working and companion traits. But, we chose a GSD, again. She's got the Lab's reliable work ethic with the Golden's goofus charm. Our 4.5 yr old girl is strong, smart, & gorgeous. She joined our family 18 months ago, already Schutzhund certified....Agility trained....& Good Citizen (Veterans events) awarded. The health status of her prior owner (retired USN veteran) made her available to us.
We enjoy visits with some Goldens and a few Labs that family and friends have.

Just an observation, maybe someone can fill in the context. It’s wild that despite their similarities you can’t find a Golden at a shelter to adopt and they cost $1,500-$2,000 to purchase from a breeder, while if you scroll on any local animal shelter they have many Labrador Retriever puppies or young dogs. I’m assuming because the labs are mixed, but still interesting! Great video.

Agree. Both don’t live nearly long enough. 😢 We have our 7th Golden now, and over the decades, have found they live between 11-14 years. Pretty much all large breeds don’t live as long as smaller breeds. Just a fact…and has nothing to do with the specific breed. Goldens and Labs have similar temperament, and make GREAT family dogs, and very trainable. Goldens shed more than Labs, but both shed. I would also say that Labs, in general, are more active than Golden’s…although that is not always the case. We have 2 Goldens right now…and one is a couch potato, while the other is into everything.

Over the years we've owned two yellow labs and one black lab. We now have a 7 month old Golden Retriever. While the labs pretty much never did a naughty thing in their lives the golden does something naughty daily. Last week she got up at the table and got my wife's $300 sunglasses and chewed them up in minutes. We can't take her in the horse pasture because she eats horse poop like it's cotton candy. That being said the golden is nonstop fun, super high energy, refuses to be ignored and makes us laugh all day. She is gorgeous, almost regal and when we take her anywhere people can't keep their hands off her. She's quite the trip.

I've had both. I loved them all! My black labs were a lot more protective than my golden. But, my golden didn't kill my chickens...my labs would kill them every chance they got. 🤦‍♀️ As far as cancer goes, my black lab had terminal cancer at 9 years old! We were devastated when we had to put her down. Her sister, lived to be just shy of 12 years old, but had really bad diabetes for the last 2 1/2 years of her life. That meant giving her two shots of insulin every day, and poking her to check her blood sugar, at least twice a day. If we had to do a blood curve, we had to poke her more. She was diagnosed with diabetes; two days later, her sister was diagnosed with cancer. 😢 That was really tough! My golden, did get cancer, but not until she was 13. She lived to be 14, and she was active, right up until the end! As I said, I love all of my dogs, but my golden definitely had a longer life than my labs.

Out of Golden Retrievers, Golden Doodles and Labrador Retrievers the GOLDEN RETRIEVER WINS BY MILES!
They are smarter, calm and not hyper, easier to train well, listen and follow commands much better, more friendly and cuddly. Overall they aren't even close or in the same league as their close alternatives. I've never seen a mean or hyper Golden Retriever. I don't think I have seen a Labrador Retriever that wasn't. Golden Doodles have Poodle mixed in with the Golden Retriever and while they are better dogs than Labs they aren't the same or have the same disposition as 99% of Golden Retrievers. You couldn't ask for a better breed or dog if you seek a family member and loving companion.

I've always had pits but a year n half ago I bought a mix breed for $300 and he is one of the most handsome mixes I've ever seen, his dad was a rambling Lab and his mom was a rottie and he looks like a gold rottie, he has the gold color with darker areas around face and other places not rottie style at all. But he's 100lbs of pure goofball and has a sweet heart, it took a year n half to even hear him have an authoritative bark, I've never heard him growl. He likes to practice tough guy while playing but when in a confrontation he hauls butt wants no part of it. But he looks as if he could be a monster but Fast swinging tail gives away his sweet demeanor. I have no plans on neutering only if there's a reason to in the future, he doesn't run loose and he's not mean or aggressive so why strip his testosterone for no reason, my pit/ hound mix that just passed was intact and he lasted 14 years and was in great physical shape up until the last year or so. It just seems todays culture is to snip em without question. And it's not always necessary as a matter of fact my dog has been attracted a few times all neutered dogs. I actually sent an email to local shelter because I see an adorable puppy that was only 3 months old and tiny and had been neutered already by them, that is not good for him at all, that is going to ensure health problems no question especially if he grows to a large size. I said they could adopt him out with a how ever many month contract to have him neutered vs strip his testosterone as a toddler.

@Lauren-u3d I would say she looks 95% like a yellow lab. She has a slightly fluffy tail. But she's big, lean and muscular, weighs about 104lb in the winter and 96lb in the summer (she's an avid swimmer). Her coat is thick - lots of shedding, just like a lab and a golden. She's on a raw diet, and our pool is salt water. At seven years old we're always getting compliments on how soft her coat is.
