"Summer in the City" by the Spoonful was allover the radio in the summer of 1965... DJ's played every hour. And you if are into summer sounds, check out "Under the Board Walk" by the Drifters. It came out in 1964 but it was in heavy rotation on the radio in 1965.
The Lovin' Spoonful is an American folk rock band formed in Greenwich Village, New York City, in 1964. Led by their primary songwriter John Sebastian, the band was among the most popular groups in the United States for a short period in the mid-1960s and their music and image influenced many of the contemporary rock acts of their era. Beginning in July 1965 with their debut single "Do You Believe in Magic", the band had seven consecutive singles reach the Top Ten of the U.S. charts in the eighteen months that followed, including the number two hits "Daydream" and "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" and the chart-topping "Summer in the City".
Hi Mark! You seem to always have some essential & concise information on whatever music/musician/band is being reacted to.....and I think that's great! Keep up your much appreciated work of informing us. I only have one thing to add to your Lovin' Spoonful comment - lead guitarist Zal Yanovsky was Canadian - always something we Canucks feel the need to point out - LOL. He was from my old Toronto neighbourhood & went to my high school although I didn't meet him until much later on in life when he was a restauranteur (Chez Piggy) in Kingston, Ontario. I do hope JM reacts to more Spoonful. Any song would be great, but you really got me smiling when I saw "Summer in the City" - not the best time of year to react to it, but why not toss it in during Christmas? 😁🎄 Cheers to JM for getting into some amazing music and cheers to you Mark for always giving us great comments!
HIGH my Canadian friend. JM has done some of the most iconic legendary songs with his very intelligent and charming comprehensive analysis of the songs. Very easy to like and support a guy like him and enjoy his content. Have a Splendid Day.@@CharCanuck14
Sebastian was part of the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 19609s that produced (among others) the Mama's and the Papa's, who mentioned Sebastian and the Lovin' Spoonful in their autobiographical song "Creeque Alley."
A great tribute to music, JMBoy! Sometimes music can take you to deeper depths or distances that you cant explain, but john sevbastian and the lovin spoonful capture it here in some 2 odd minutes!
This song was a massive hit. It asked the question we all know the answer to. Music is Magical. Thanks for adding another legendary name to your awesome Playlist. #82
"MAGICAL".... Yes.... "But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout a rock 'n' roll".... By now JM, you are no longer a stranger to Rock N Roll. You are learning fast why we call it "Classic Rock"
mid sixties rock and roll was the best - jangly guitars, great singing, harmonies that soar. John Sebastian was so talented. They don't make hippy's like that anymore
"Do You Believe In Magic" Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart? How the music can free her whenever it starts And it's magic if the music is groovy It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout a rock 'n' roll If you believe in magic, don't bother to choose If it's jug band music or rhythm and blues Just go and listen, it'll start with a smile That won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try Your feet start tapping, and you can't seem to find How you got there, so just blow your mind If you believe in magic, come along with me We'll dance until morning 'til there's just you and me And maybe if the music is right I'll meet you tomorrow sorta late at night And we'll go dancing baby, then you'll see How the magic's in the music, and the music's in me Yeah, do you believe in magic? Yeah, believe in the magic of the young girl's soul Believe in the magic of a rock 'n' roll Believe in the magic that can set you free Ahh, talking 'bout the magic Do you believe in magic? (Do you believe like I believe?) Do you believe, believer? (Do you believe like I believe?) Do you believe in magic? (Do you believe like I believe?) Do you believe in magic?
I was on line at the grocery store the other day it was a long line every one a little annoyed all of a sudden this song comes on everyone starts smiling. Magic!!
John Sebastian's father was a professional harmonica player that could play classiala music with orchestras etc. His mother was a radio comedy writer. They once housed Woody Guthrie in their house while he was in town in NYC. I know I know..? Woody who? Oh God....

I was 11 years old when this song hit the radio and made us all realize how magical music can be. A real life changing song.

A big hit and such a happy soul lifting tune.

"Do You Believe In Magic"
Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart?
How the music can free her whenever it starts
And it's magic if the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul
But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout a rock 'n' roll
If you believe in magic, don't bother to choose
If it's jug band music or rhythm and blues
Just go and listen, it'll start with a smile
That won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try
Your feet start tapping, and you can't seem to find
How you got there, so just blow your mind
If you believe in magic, come along with me
We'll dance until morning 'til there's just you and me
And maybe if the music is right
I'll meet you tomorrow sorta late at night
And we'll go dancing baby, then you'll see
How the magic's in the music, and the music's in me
Yeah, do you believe in magic?
Yeah, believe in the magic of the young girl's soul
Believe in the magic of a rock 'n' roll
Believe in the magic that can set you free
Ahh, talking 'bout the magic
Do you believe in magic?
(Do you believe like I believe?) Do you believe, believer?
(Do you believe like I believe?) Do you believe in magic?
(Do you believe like I believe?) Do you believe in magic?
